Chapter 17: The Girl in the Missing Records
"Who is the girl?"" Ray demanded.
Patricia said nothing.
Marcus restrained Gordon while another investigator secured the folder. Harold gathered the scattered documents, his expression growing more troubled with every page.
Daniel stood frozen.
Ray grabbed his arm.
"Who is she?""
Daniel swallowed.
"Her name is Lily.""
Dorothy arrived with Elaine just as he said it.
She looked between the men.
"Lily who?""
Daniel lowered his head.
"Your granddaughter.""
Dorothy stared.
"My granddaughter?""
Daniel nodded.
"She was born twenty years ago.""
Ray felt a fresh wave of disbelief.
"You have a daughter?""
Daniel looked at him.
"Yes.""
"And you never told us?""
"I couldn't.""
Dorothy approached him slowly.
"Why?""
Daniel's eyes filled.
"Because Patricia told me Lily would be taken away if anyone discovered who her father was.""
Patricia suddenly laughed.
"Don't pretend you're innocent now.""
Daniel turned toward her.
"You told me the records were sealed!""
"They were.""
"You said she was safe!""
"She was safe as long as you cooperated.""
Evelyn stepped closer.
"Where is she?""
Daniel looked at the ground.
"I don't know.""
Dorothy grabbed his arm.
"What do you mean you don't know?""
"Patricia arranged for her to live with another family when she was a baby. She said they would raise her somewhere far away from all of this.""
Dorothy began shaking.
"You let someone take your child?""
"I was twenty-two. I had no money. I was terrified.""
Ray's voice hardened.
"That doesn't excuse twenty years of silence.""
"I know.""
Patricia tried to interrupt.
"He's making this up to avoid responsibility.""
Elaine raised the document she had recovered.
"Then perhaps you can explain why your company paid a private adoption agency every month for eighteen years.""
Patricia's face changed.
Marcus looked at the paperwork.
"That's a substantial amount.""
Daniel stared.
"Where is she?""
Patricia remained silent.
Evelyn looked at the investigator.
"Can you find the agency?""
"We can start with the payment records.""
Harold examined the ledger.
"There is another possibility.""
Everyone turned toward him.
He pointed to a small entry near the bottom of the page.
"Michael established a separate education fund for a child named Lily Callahan.""
Daniel's face drained.
"That's her.""
Ray frowned.
"Why would Dad know about her?""
Harold looked at Daniel.
"Because Daniel told him.""
Daniel nodded.
"I wrote to Michael after Lily was born. I didn't know what else to do. He sent money and told me to keep her safe.""
Dorothy covered her mouth.
"Frank knew?""
Daniel nodded.
"He knew, too.""
The revelation hurt Dorothy in a different way.
Her husband had carried another secret, one involving a child who might have been part of their family all along.
"Why didn't he tell me?""
Daniel's voice cracked.
"Because he was trying to protect Lily.""
Dorothy looked at him.
"From what?""
Daniel looked toward Patricia.
"From her.""
Patricia laughed bitterly.
"Your father was the one who made the arrangement.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Frank arranged the education fund. You arranged the disappearance.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"That's enough. Patricia, you're coming with us.""
Patricia didn't resist this time.
But as the investigators led her away, she turned toward Ray.
"You think finding that girl will fix everything?""
Ray stared at her.
"No. But it might give her the truth.""
Patricia smiled.
"Then ask Daniel why the adoption papers list a different father.""
Daniel's expression collapsed.
Patricia continued.
"Ask him why the child was registered as Lily Price.""
Ray turned slowly.
"Price?""
Daniel nodded.
"I never understood it.""
Gordon, still restrained nearby, suddenly began struggling.
"Don't listen to her!""
Marcus turned.
"What's your involvement?""
Gordon shook his head.
"She used my family's name.""
Patricia laughed.
"Your family paid for it.""
Gordon went silent.
Elaine studied the adoption documents.
"There's something missing.""
She turned the page.
The birth mother's name had been blacked out.
But a handwritten note remained visible near the bottom.
Biological parentage verified through Callahan family records.
Ray looked at Harold.
"What does that mean?""
Harold examined it carefully.
Then he sat down.
"Michael knew Lily existed before she was born.""
Daniel stared.
"How?""
Harold opened the metal case and removed another letter.
The envelope was addressed to Frank.
The handwriting belonged to Michael.
Harold read it silently, then passed it to Ray.
The letter contained only a few paragraphs.
Michael explained that Daniel had come to him with news of an unexpected pregnancy. He had promised to help, but he had also discovered that Patricia had begun asking questions about the child's parentage.
The final paragraph was underlined.
If Daniel cannot protect his daughter, make sure she grows up knowing she was loved. Do not let Patricia turn her into another missing Callahan.
Ray looked at Daniel.
"Why didn't you tell us?""
Daniel broke down.
"Because I thought she was better off without me.""
Dorothy moved toward him.
"You don't get to decide that for her.""
Daniel nodded.
"I know.""
Harold pointed to the payment records.
"The education fund was never closed. It was transferred to a custodial account when Lily turned eighteen.""
Elaine checked the date.
"Two years ago.""
Marcus looked up.
"Then there may be a current address.""
He made a call.
While they waited, Ray approached Evelyn.
"There's something I need to ask.""
She looked at him.
"What?""
"Patricia said Sarah was connected to Thomas. If Daniel is Michael's son, then Sarah is Michael's granddaughter through Daniel, too.""
Evelyn nodded.
"That makes sense.""
Ray looked toward Sarah, who had arrived with the second vehicle.
She stood near Dorothy, looking frightened.
"Then why did Patricia say Sarah was Thomas's daughter?""
Sarah stepped forward.
"Because she wanted me to believe I had a separate claim.""
Everyone turned toward her.
Sarah wiped her eyes.
"Patricia showed me a birth record. She said Daniel wasn't my biological father. She said my real father was Thomas.""
Daniel stared.
"That's impossible.""
Sarah looked at him.
"She said you adopted me.""
Daniel shook his head.
"No.""
Harold took the document from Sarah.
He examined it.
Then his expression changed.
"Sarah, this isn't your birth certificate.""
"What?""
"It's a hospital record for a different child.""
Sarah looked confused.
Harold turned it toward her.
The child's name had been covered, but the date and hospital were visible.
"Patricia used this to confuse your identity.""
Elaine looked closer.
"There's a patient number.""
Marcus photographed it.
"We can verify it.""
Sarah looked at Daniel.
"Then who am I?""
Daniel hesitated.
"You're my daughter.""
Sarah began crying.
"How do I know?""
Dorothy took her hand.
"Because I know the day you were born. I held you. I brought you home.""
Sarah collapsed into her mother's arms.
Ray looked away.
For the first time, he understood how completely Patricia had weaponized the family's secrets.
She hadn't simply stolen money.
She had made every person doubt their place in the family.
Marcus returned from his call.
"We found a lead.""
Daniel looked up.
"Where?""
"A woman named Claire Bennett has been receiving payments from the custodial account. Her address is in Nashville.""
Daniel stood.
"That's Lily's foster mother.""
Marcus nodded.
"Possibly.""
Ray grabbed his jacket.
"Let's go.""
But Harold stopped him.
"Wait.""
He held up the adoption document.
"There's one more thing.""
Ray turned.
Harold pointed to the signature of the witness.
It belonged to Frank Miller.
"Frank personally witnessed the placement.""
Daniel looked devastated.
"He gave her away?""
Harold shook his head.
"No. Look at the date.""
The document had been signed three months after Lily's birth.
Harold read the handwritten note attached to it.
Temporary guardianship only. Child to remain eligible for reunification with biological father upon proof of financial stability and independent safety.
Daniel stared at the words.
"He was trying to get her back to me.""
Harold nodded.
"Yes.""
Dorothy closed her eyes.
"Frank never gave up on you.""
Daniel began to sob.
Then Marcus's phone rang again.
He answered.
His expression changed.
"Ray, we have a problem.""
"What now?""
"The woman at the Nashville address says Lily left two days ago.""
"Where did she go?""
Marcus listened.
Then looked directly at Daniel.
"She said Lily received a message from someone claiming to be her grandfather.""
Daniel went pale.
"My father is dead.""
Marcus nodded.
"That's what makes this strange.""
May you like
He lowered his phone.
"The message was sent from an account registered under Michael Callahan's name.""
