Chapter 16: The Brother Who Was Never His

Ray didn't move.

The photograph remained open on his phone. Patricia stood beside the aircraft, Gordon Price at her shoulder, and Daniel between them.

Daniel wasn't being forced.

He was smiling.

"Tell me," Ray said to Harold.

"What did my father know about Daniel?""

Harold looked toward Dorothy, then Evelyn.

"This isn't something I wanted to reveal in front of everyone.""

"Then you should have told me years ago.""

"I couldn't. Michael made me promise.""

Ray's jaw tightened.

"My father is dead. Your promise doesn't protect anyone now.""

Harold removed a chair and sat down.

"Daniel wasn't Frank Miller's biological son.""

Dorothy's face drained of color.

"That's not true.""

"I'm sorry, Dorothy.""

She shook her head.

"Frank raised him. He loved him. He was his son.""

"Legally and emotionally, yes," Harold replied.

"But biologically, no.""

Ray looked toward Daniel's empty chair.

"Who was his father?""

Harold opened the metal case and removed a faded document.

"Michael Callahan.""

The room fell silent.

Evelyn slowly sat down.

Dorothy stared at Harold as if she hadn't understood the words.

"Michael?""

Harold nodded.

"Before Michael married Ray's mother, he had a relationship with Dorothy. Daniel was born from that relationship. Frank knew the truth and raised him as his own.""

Ray felt the floor shift beneath him.

Daniel was his half-brother.

Not through Frank.

Through Michael.

"Why did nobody tell me?""

"Michael believed Daniel deserved a normal childhood. Frank agreed. They thought keeping the secret would protect him.""

Dorothy's voice trembled.

"Frank promised he would never let Daniel feel unwanted.""

Harold nodded.

"He kept that promise.""

Ray looked at the photograph again.

The man who had spent weeks trying to steal Dorothy's home was the son of his father.

His own brother.

"Does Daniel know?""

Harold hesitated.

"He's known since he was twenty-one.""

Ray closed his eyes.

That changed everything.

Daniel hadn't stumbled into Patricia's scheme because he was desperate or confused.

He had known about the family trust, his biological father, and the hidden inheritance for years.

"How much did he steal?"" Ray asked.

Harold opened the ledger.

"The first four million dollars were transferred out of Michael's investment accounts shortly before his death.""

"By Daniel?""

"Not directly. The records show several transactions authorized through a company he controlled.""

Ray looked at Dorothy.

She was staring at the photograph, tears running down her cheeks.

"Why would Frank let him stay?"" she whispered.

"Because Frank loved him," Harold said.

"And because he believed Daniel could still choose to do the right thing.""

Ray's phone vibrated.

Another message.

This time it was from Daniel.

I can explain everything. Don't let Patricia leave with the money.

Ray typed back.

Then tell me why you're standing beside her.

The response came almost immediately.

Because she has the original records. If she gets on that plane, Evelyn loses everything.

Ray looked at Marcus.

"He's trying to help us.""

Marcus studied the photograph.

"Or he's trying to make sure we come.""

"Either way, we're going.""

They left for Tennessee less than an hour later.

Dorothy traveled with Elaine in a separate vehicle. Evelyn rode with Ray and Marcus, clutching Michael's letter.

During the drive, she finally spoke.

"I spent my entire life believing Michael abandoned me.""

Ray kept his eyes on the road.

"He didn't.""

"I know. But knowing something and feeling it are different.""

Ray nodded.

"My father wasn't perfect. He should have told us. He should have fought harder.""

Evelyn looked out the window.

"Do you think he would have accepted me?""

Ray glanced at her.

"He spent years trying to find you. I think he would have opened the door before you even knocked.""

She smiled sadly.

For a while, neither spoke.

Then Evelyn asked, "What about Daniel?""

Ray tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

"I don't know.""

At the airfield, Marcus coordinated with local investigators.

The aircraft was still there.

So were Patricia and Gordon.

Daniel stood near a hangar, pacing with his phone pressed to his ear.

When he spotted Ray, he immediately approached.

"Thank God.""

Ray stepped out.

"Start talking.""

Daniel glanced toward the hangar.

"Not here.""

"Here is fine.""

Daniel swallowed.

"I took the four million.""

Ray felt anger rise through his chest.

"You stole from your own family.""

"I was twenty-one. Patricia told me it was money Michael had set aside for me.""

"Did you believe her?""

Daniel looked down.

"At first.""

"And later?""

"I knew.""

The admission hung between them.

Daniel continued.

"I tried to put some of it back. But Gordon had already moved most of the money. Patricia threatened to expose me as Michael's illegitimate son. She said Frank's reputation would be destroyed, and Dorothy would lose everything.""

Ray stared at him.

"So you helped them steal from Mom?""

"I thought I could fix it.""

"You signed papers to take her house.""

"I know.""

"You tried to have her declared incompetent.""

Daniel's eyes filled.

"I know.""

Ray stepped closer.

"Then what exactly do you want me to forgive?""

Daniel had no answer.

A door slammed behind them.

Patricia emerged from the hangar carrying a leather folder.

Gordon followed.

"Well," Patricia said.

"The family reunion is complete.""

Marcus signaled to the investigators.

"Patricia Cole, we need you to come with us.""

She smiled.

"On what grounds?""

"Financial fraud, identity theft, and attempted unlawful transfer of trust assets. Additional charges may follow.""

Gordon laughed.

"Do you have any idea who you're dealing with?""

Marcus didn't blink.

"Yes. That's why we're here.""

Patricia opened the folder.

"Then perhaps you should examine this.""

She pulled out a document and held it up.

It was an original authorization signed by Michael Callahan.

Harold stepped forward.

"Where did you get that?""

"From the person who actually controlled the money.""

Patricia pointed toward Daniel.

Ray turned.

Daniel looked terrified.

"What did you give her?""

Daniel shook his head.

"Nothing.""

Patricia smiled.

"Tell them about the second account.""

Daniel's face collapsed.

Harold stepped forward.

"Daniel, what second account?""

Daniel looked at Ray.

"I didn't know it was still active.""

Patricia laughed.

"Of course you didn't.""

She removed another page.

The account was registered under a company called Miller Heritage Trust.

Its beneficiary was listed as Daniel Miller.

But the authorization carried another signature.

Ray recognized it immediately.

His father's.

Harold took the paper.

He examined it, then looked at Daniel.

"This document is dated three days after Michael's death.""

Daniel nodded slowly.

"That's what Patricia told me.""

Ray frowned.

"How could Dad sign something after he died?""

Patricia's smile widened.

"Exactly.""

She held up a second page.

"And that is why nobody in this family should trust the documents Harold has been showing you.""

Before anyone could respond, Evelyn stepped forward.

"You're lying.""

Patricia turned.

"Am I?""

Evelyn pointed at the signature.

"That's not Michael's handwriting.""

Harold examined it again.

Then he noticed something.

A small mark beneath the signature.

He looked up sharply.

"This isn't an original document.""

Patricia's smile vanished.

Harold turned the page over.

The back contained a faint impression of a different signature.

One belonging to Gordon Price.

Marcus immediately moved toward him.

Gordon bolted.

Two investigators caught him before he reached the aircraft.

Patricia dropped the folder.

But instead of running, she looked at Daniel.

"You promised me.""

Daniel backed away.

"I didn't promise you anything.""

Patricia's expression became murderous.

"You promised you'd keep the girl quiet.""

Ray turned toward Evelyn.

"What girl?""

Daniel's face went white.

May you like

Patricia realized her mistake.

And for the first time, she looked afraid.
