Chapter 9: The Truth Written Before June Was Born

The next morning, I demanded answers.

No more waiting.

No more half-truths.

No more people telling me they would explain later.

My daughter’s life had been turned into a mystery, and I was done being the last person to know.

Detective Harper agreed.

“We’re going to open the files.””

The flash drive sat between us.

Small.

Almost harmless.

But everyone in that room knew it contained something dangerous.

The technician worked for nearly an hour.

Then finally:

“We’re in.””

The first folder appeared.

Pregnancy records.

Medical reports.

Emails.

Messages.

I held my breath.

Then we saw it.

A file dated eight months before June’s birth.

The title:

“Project Family.””

I felt sick.

“That’s not a medical file.””

“No,” Detective Harper said.

“It’s not.””

We opened it.

Inside were documents about inheritance.

DNA testing.

Family history.

And one name repeated over and over.

Carter.

My husband’s family.

I looked confused.

“What does this mean?””

The technician opened another document.

Then another.

Finally, Detective Harper found something.

A DNA report.

Not mine.

Not Luke’s.

Someone else’s.

“What is this?””

She read quietly.

Then looked at me.

“This changes everything.””

My heart pounded.

“Tell me.””

She hesitated.

“Emily… June wasn’t just connected to Luke.””

“What does that mean?””

“She was connected to someone else.””

I felt my hands shake.

“Who?””

Detective Harper looked at the report.

“Your husband’s father.””

I froze.

“That’s impossible.””

Luke’s father had died years ago.

Before I ever met him.

“How?””

“We don’t know yet.””

The room went silent.

Then another document opened.

A letter.

Written by Margaret.

The first sentence destroyed everything I believed.

“If the child is born, the inheritance must be protected.””

I stared.

Inheritance.

Money.

That was the reason.

Not jealousy.

Not suspicion.

Not betrayal.

Money.

Margaret and Luke believed June had a claim to something.

Something valuable.

But then I noticed another line.

A line that made no sense.

“The child cannot know the truth.””

My voice shook.

“What truth?””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

Then another message appeared.

From Luke.

Sent to Margaret.

“I will handle Emily.””

I closed my eyes.

The betrayal felt physical.

He had been planning against me while I was preparing a nursery.

While I was choosing names.

While I was carrying his child.

A few hours later, Luke agreed to speak.

I almost refused.

But I needed answers.

When he entered the room, he looked older.

Broken.

But I felt nothing.

Not anymore.

“Why?”” I asked.

He looked down.

“Because I was scared.””

“Of what?””

He swallowed.

“Of losing everything.””

I laughed softly.

“You mean money.””

He didn’t deny it.

“My father left something behind.””

“What?””

“A trust.””

I stared.

“And June?””

He nodded.

“She was the key.””

My stomach turned.

“She was a baby.””

“I know.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to say that.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I know what I did was wrong.””

“Wrong?””

My voice broke.

“You almost took my daughter.””

“I know.””

“You used Eli.””

“I know.””

“You lied to me.””

“I know.””

But knowing didn’t fix anything.

Then Luke said something unexpected.

“There’s something you need to know about June.””

I froze.

“What?””

He looked terrified.

Not guilty.

Terrified.

“Margaret wasn’t afraid of losing money.””

I stared.

“Then what was she afraid of?””

Luke whispered:

“She was afraid someone would find out who June’s mother really is.””

My blood ran cold.

“What are you talking about?””

He looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.

“Emily…”

He swallowed.

“Your daughter’s birth was never supposed to happen.””

Silence.

“What does that mean?””

Luke looked away.

“It means someone tried to stop you from having her.””

The room felt colder.

Someone had planned the baby swap.

Someone had hidden the truth.

Someone had been watching me before June was even born.

And now I finally understood.

The hospital incident wasn’t the beginning of the nightmare.

It was the final step of a plan that started long before.

A plan built around my daughter.

And the terrifying truth was…

I still didn’t know why.
