Chapter 8: The File Hidden Beneath The Hospital
Three days passed without hearing from Camille.
Three days of waiting.
Three days of wondering whether she was safe.
Three days of knowing someone out there had answers and was terrified of revealing them.
During that time, Luke remained in custody.
His lawyers released statements claiming he had made “emotional mistakes” because of stress.
Mistakes.
That word made me furious.
Mistakes were forgetting a doctor’s appointment.
Mistakes were buying the wrong size diapers.
You did not accidentally create a plan to take someone’s newborn.
You did not accidentally manipulate a child.
You did not accidentally open an identification band.
But the more investigators uncovered, the more complicated the truth became.
Because Luke was guilty.
But he was also being used.
And I needed to know by whom.
Detective Harper called me early one morning.
“We found something.””
Those words had become terrifying.
“What now?””
“The hospital records.””
I sat down.
“What about them?””
“There’s a hidden file.””
I frowned.
“Hidden?””
“Yes.””
“Who created it?””
She paused.
“That’s what concerns us.””
An hour later, I was sitting in an investigation room looking at documents.
The file contained information about newborn security failures.
Hospital vulnerabilities.
Employee access.
And names.
Lots of names.
But one name appeared more than any other.
Dr. Adrian Wells.
The head of maternal services.
I knew him.
He was the doctor who oversaw my delivery.
The man who shook Luke’s hand.
The man who told me everything went perfectly.
I looked at Detective Harper.
“Are you saying my doctor was involved?””
“We’re saying he knew about the security weaknesses.””
“That doesn’t mean he helped.””
“No.””
She looked serious.
“But someone used information only he and a few others had access to.””
I stared at the papers.
How many people had been involved?
How many people had looked at my daughter as a problem to solve?
Then another document caught my attention.
A patient list.
I recognized a name.
Rachel Morgan.
The other mother.
“What is this?””
Detective Harper looked over.
“That’s what we’re trying to understand.””
The document showed Rachel’s pregnancy history.
And next to it was a note.
A note written months before either baby was born.
“Potential match.””
My stomach turned.
“What does that mean?””
Detective Harper didn’t answer immediately.
“It means someone selected these two pregnancies.””
I felt sick.
This was never random.
June and Rachel’s baby had been chosen.
From the beginning.
I thought about Luke saying he wanted to “fix something.””
He wasn’t fixing anything.
He was following a plan someone else created.
That afternoon, Rachel came to visit.
She looked exhausted.
But stronger.
“I heard they found more evidence.””
I nodded.
“They picked us.””
She looked confused.
“What?””
“Your baby and mine.””
Her face changed.
“No.””
“Yes.””
She sat down slowly.
“Why?””
I looked at the documents.
“I don’t know.””
Rachel covered her mouth.
Then she whispered:
“Luke told me something strange.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“The night before the delivery.””
My heart started racing.
“What did he say?””
“He said…”
She stopped.
“Tell me.””
Rachel swallowed.
“He said your baby was important.””
A chill moved through me.
“Important how?””
“He wouldn’t explain.””
I looked at June.
Important.
That word kept appearing.
But why?
A baby wasn’t a business deal.
A baby wasn’t a threat.
A baby wasn’t something powerful people fought over.
Unless…
Unless June represented something.
Something someone wanted.
Something someone feared.
That evening, Detective Harper returned with another update.
“We found Camille.””
I stood immediately.
“Is she okay?””
“Yes.””
I exhaled.
“Where was she?””
“She was hiding.””
“Why?””
Detective Harper looked at me.
“Because she had evidence.””
My heart raced.
“What evidence?””
She placed an envelope on the table.
Inside was a flash drive.
“Camille copied hospital files before she disappeared.””
“What’s on it?””
Detective Harper looked at the drive.
“We haven’t opened everything.””
“Why?””
“Because some of the files are encrypted.””
I stared.
“Can you unlock them?””
“We’re working on it.””
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
I answered.
A voice whispered:
“Emily.””
I knew that voice.
Camille.
“Where are you?””
“No time.””
Her voice was shaking.
“You need to listen carefully.””
I grabbed the phone tighter.
“What?””
“The baby swap wasn’t about June.””
My heart stopped.
“Then what was it about?””
A pause.
Then Camille said:
“Your husband was trying to get access to something hidden in your daughter’s records.””
I felt numb.
“My daughter’s records?””
“Yes.””
“What records?””
Her voice dropped.
“The ones that prove who she really is.””
Before I could ask another question, the call ended.
I looked at Detective Harper.
She looked back at me.
And for the first time, we both understood.
This was never just about stealing a baby.
May you like
It was about a secret.
A secret attached to my daughter.
