Chapter 6: The Truth Behind Luke’s Real Plan
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because June cried.
Not because Eli needed me.
Because of one sentence.
He was trying to erase her.
The words followed me everywhere.
While I washed bottles.
While I folded tiny clothes.
While I watched my daughter breathe.
Erase her.
What did that mean?
I called the number back twenty times.
No answer.
By morning, the number was disconnected.
Detective Harper tried tracing it.
Nothing.
No record.
No name.
Nothing.
It was like the woman had disappeared.
But her warning remained.
And I knew one thing.
She was afraid.
People don’t risk contacting strangers unless they believe something terrible is happening.
Later that afternoon, Detective Harper arrived.
She had new information.
“We searched Luke’s computer.””
I looked at her.
“And?””
She placed a folder on the table.
“He wasn’t just researching hospital security.””
I opened the folder.
Inside were printed pages.
Legal documents.
Custody laws.
Inheritance information.
My hands trembled.
“Why was he researching this?””
Detective Harper looked at me carefully.
“Because Luke believed your daughter could affect his financial situation.””
I stared.
“What?””
“He had significant debt.””
I felt sick.
Luke never told me.
“He was hiding money problems?””
“Yes.””
The pieces started connecting.
Luke’s fear.
His paranoia.
His obsession with control.
He didn’t just think June wasn’t his.
He thought June was a threat.
A threat to his money.
His future.
His image.
“What was his plan?””
The detective hesitated.
Then answered.
“He believed if something happened to the baby, he could avoid responsibility and protect his assets.””
I couldn’t speak.
The room spun.
Something happened.
To my daughter.
The sentence was too horrifying to fully understand.
“You mean…”
Detective Harper nodded.
“We believe the baby swap was a cover.””
A cover.
The hospital switch.
The fake accusation.
The confusion.
It was all designed to make everyone look in one direction.
Away from the real crime.
I thought about Eli standing in front of the bassinet.
His tiny body blocking anyone from getting close.
He wasn’t just protecting June.
He was protecting her from something much worse.
That evening, I sat down with Eli.
“There’s something I need to tell you.””
He looked worried.
“Is Dad coming back?””
I paused.
“I don’t know.””
He looked down.
“Did I ruin everything?””
My heart broke.
“No.””
I moved closer.
“You saved everything.””
He looked at me.
“Really?””
“Yes.””
I held his hand.
“You were the only person brave enough to say something.””
A tear fell down his cheek.
“I was scared.””
“I know.””
“But I thought about what you told me.””
“What did I tell you?””
He smiled faintly.
“You said family protects each other.””
I cried.
Because he remembered.
And because he understood something Luke never did.
Family wasn’t about blood.
It was about choices.
The next morning, Detective Harper called again.
They found Margaret.
And they found something with her.
A notebook.
Inside were months of plans.
Names.
Dates.
Details.
But the last page had one sentence written in bold.
A sentence that made my entire body freeze.
“After the baby is gone, Eli comes home.””
I stared at the words.
They never wanted to protect Eli.
They wanted to use him.
They wanted him to believe losing June was his fault.
They wanted him dependent on them.
The realization was devastating.
But then Detective Harper showed me another page.
A name.
Someone I didn’t recognize.
Someone who had been helping Margaret and Luke.
Someone who had access to hospital systems.
Someone who knew exactly how to move babies without being caught.
I looked at the name.
And my blood turned cold.
Because it belonged to someone I had trusted.
Someone who had held June after she was born.
Someone who had smiled at me and said:
“Congratulations, Mom.””
The nurse who helped deliver my daughter.
Camille.
I looked up.
“No.””
Detective Harper’s expression was serious.
“We’re not saying she’s guilty yet.””
But I already knew.
The nightmare wasn’t over.
It had only changed faces.

Because the person who helped bring my daughter into the world…
might have also helped someone try to take her away.
