Chapter 9: The Recording Grandma Hid

Helen returned the following afternoon.

This time, she brought a small digital recorder and a laptop.

Marcus helped her connect the device.

I watched from my hospital bed.

“What exactly are we going to hear?”” I asked.

Helen adjusted her glasses.

“Your grandmother recorded a conversation with Patricia, the bookkeeper. It concerns the missing inheritance money.””

“Why didn't Grandma give it to the police?””

“She wanted to understand what had happened first. She was afraid that a formal accusation would destroy the family before she had enough evidence.””

Marcus looked at her.

“And now?””

“Now the circumstances are different.””

Helen pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then my grandmother's voice emerged.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakably hers.

“Patricia, please tell me again what you found.””

A woman's voice answered.

“Mrs. Bennett, the account was accessed three times without your authorization.””

“By whom?””

“The first transaction was authorized using Robert's credentials. The second was made through Rachel's account.””

My grandmother sighed.

“And the third?””

There was a pause.

“The third was transferred through Linda's personal account.””

I covered my mouth.

My mother.

All three of them.

My grandmother continued.

“How much?””

“Approximately one hundred and fifty thousand dollars altogether.””

“That's impossible. Robert told me the money was still in the trust.””

“He lied.””

Silence followed.

Then Grandma spoke again.

“Does Claire know?””

“No.””

“Good. I don't want her dragged into this.””

Patricia's voice became softer.

“Mrs. Bennett, there's something else.””

“What?””

“Rachel asked me to prepare documents transferring the house.””

My grandmother's breathing changed.

“To whom?””

“Your son.””

“Robert?””

“Yes.””

“Did you prepare them?””

“No. I refused.””

A long pause.

Then Grandma said something that made my heart ache.

“Thank you, Patricia. I knew I could trust someone.””

The recording continued.

Patricia explained that she'd discovered several forged signatures and questionable transfers.

Then came a sentence that made Marcus sit forward.

“Mrs. Bennett, I think they're planning to use Claire's inheritance to cover the money they've already taken.””

My grandmother answered immediately.

“Then they will have to go through me first.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

I stared at the recorder.

For years, I'd believed my grandmother had simply become disappointed in my father.

Now I understood that she had been fighting to protect me.

Helen closed the laptop.

“Patricia provided this recording to your grandmother shortly before resigning. She also left copies of several financial records.””

“Where is she now?”” Marcus asked.

Helen shook her head.

“I don't know. I've tried contacting her through the last address I have, but the correspondence was returned.””

I looked at the recorder.

“Can we find her?””

“We can try.””

Marcus stood.

“I'm contacting the detective.””

Before he could reach for his phone, mine began ringing.

Mom.

I stared at the screen.

Then I answered.

“What?””

“Claire, sweetheart.””

Her voice was unusually gentle.

“I'm worried about you.””

“Why?””

“Because you've been talking to people who don't understand our family.””

I glanced at Helen.

“Do you mean my attorney?””

“She's putting terrible ideas in your head.””

“Grandma's recording isn't an idea, Mom.””

Silence.

Then my mother said:

“What recording?””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Patricia's recording.””

Another silence.

Longer this time.

Then she whispered:

“You shouldn't have heard that.””

My blood went cold.

“You knew about it?””

“Claire, listen to me. Your grandmother was confused.””

“She sounded perfectly clear.””

“She was angry with your father.””

“She said you took money from her account.””

My mother began crying.

“We were desperate.””

“For what?””

“You don't understand what was happening.””

“Then explain it.””

She lowered her voice.

“Your father had debts. Rachel had problems. We were trying to keep everyone together.””

“So you stole Grandma's money?””

“We borrowed it!””

“Without permission?””

“Your grandmother would have given it to us if she understood.””

I looked at Marcus.

He shook his head in disbelief.

“Mom, did you know Rachel planned to kick me?””

My mother's breathing changed.

“Why are you bringing that up?””

“Did you know?””

“I told her not to do anything foolish.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“So you knew she was planning something.””

“She was angry. I thought she'd say something. I didn't think—”

She stopped.

I closed my eyes.

“You didn't think she'd kick her pregnant sister?””

“Claire, please.””

“You watched her do it.””

“I was scared!””

“You ran to her instead of helping me.””

My mother began sobbing.

“I didn't know what to do.””

“You could have called an ambulance.””

“Rachel was falling apart!””

“And I was lying on the ground with my baby!””

For several seconds, all I could hear was her crying.

Then her voice changed.

The tears disappeared.

“Claire, if you keep pushing this, you will destroy your father's life.””

I stared at the phone.

“That's not my responsibility.””

“Your father could lose everything.””

“He should have thought about that before using my name.””

“Rachel could lose her wedding.””

“She should have thought about that before attacking me.””

My mother took a sharp breath.

“Do you really want to do this to your own family?””

I looked at the ultrasound picture.

“No, Mom. You did this to your family.””

I ended the call.

Marcus sat beside me.

Helen carefully packed the recorder away.

But before she could close her briefcase, my phone vibrated again.

A new message.

This time, it came from Kayla.

*Kayla:* Claire, I found Patricia.

I sat upright.

*Me:* How?

*Kayla:* Rachel accidentally mentioned her name in a family group chat. I searched for her.

Another message arrived.

*Kayla:* She's living in Ohio. I contacted her.

I stared at the screen.

*Me:* Did she answer?

The typing indicator appeared.

Then Kayla sent a voice message.

I pressed play.

A woman's voice filled the hospital room.

Older.

Shaky.

But clear.

“Claire, my name is Patricia. Your grandmother asked me to protect you if this ever happened.””

I stopped breathing.

The woman continued.

“I have the original financial records. I also have the document your father tried to make me destroy.””

A pause.

Then she said:

“And there's something you need to know about the day your grandmother changed her will.””

I looked at Helen.

She had gone completely pale.

Patricia's voice continued.

“Your father didn't just steal the inheritance money. He tried to have your grandmother declared mentally incompetent.””

Marcus stood.

“What?””

I pressed the phone closer to my ear.

Patricia's final words came slowly.

“And Rachel was the person who signed the statement supporting him.””

I lowered the phone.

My sister hadn't simply been jealous of my inheritance.

She had helped my father try to take away my grandmother's freedom.

And now, after all these years, she had tried to take my daughter from me.

But Patricia wasn't finished.

A final message appeared on Kayla's screen.

*Kayla:* She says she has proof Rachel was paid to sign it.

I stared at those words.

May you like

Then another message arrived.

*Kayla:* Claire, the payment came from your mother's account.
