Chapter 1: The Silence After the Kick
“She isn't moving.””
Marcus's voice cracked.
He looked at me, then at the circle of relatives standing around us.
“Someone call 911! Right now!””
Kayla was already dialing.
My mother, Linda, still had both arms wrapped around Rachel.
“Marcus, please don't make a scene,” she said.
He looked up slowly.
For a moment, I didn't recognize the man staring back at her.
“Make a scene?”” he repeated.
“Your daughter just kicked my pregnant wife in the stomach!””
Rachel began crying louder.
“I didn't mean to! She was insulting me!””
Marcus turned toward her.
“What exactly did she say that made you kick her?””
Rachel opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because there had been no argument.
No insult.
No confrontation.
I'd been standing beside the picnic table, holding a glass of lemonade, when Rachel approached me.
She had complained that morning about my pregnancy announcement photos receiving more attention than her engagement pictures.
I'd laughed awkwardly and told her everyone was happy for both of us.
Apparently, that had been enough.
“Marcus,” I whispered.
He immediately turned back.
“I'm here, sweetheart.””
“My stomach hurts.””
His face went pale.
“Don't move. The ambulance is coming.””
My father, Robert, finally approached.
“Let's not jump to conclusions,” he said.
“Rachel didn't know her foot would land that hard.””
Marcus stared at him.
“She looked Claire in the eyes before doing it.””
“She's your sister,” my father replied.
“And that's supposed to make this better?””
My mother shook her head.
“Marcus, you're upsetting everyone. Rachel is already terrified.””
I wanted to scream.
I was lying in the grass, six months pregnant, unable to feel my daughter's movements.
And my mother was worried about Rachel being terrified.
Kayla crouched beside me.
“Claire, I'm so sorry.””
I looked at her.
“Did you get it?””
She nodded.
“I recorded everything.””
Rachel's head snapped around.
“Kayla, delete that video!””
“No.””
“I'm your cousin!””
“And Claire is your cousin too!””
Rachel took a step toward her.
“Give me your phone.””
Kayla backed away.
“Don't touch me.””
For the first time that afternoon, my sister looked genuinely afraid.
Not because she'd hurt me.
Because someone had witnessed it.
The ambulance arrived minutes later.
Two paramedics hurried across the lawn with a stretcher.
One of them knelt beside me.
“I'm Daniel. Can you tell me how far along you are?””
“Twenty-six weeks.””
“Did you experience a direct impact to your abdomen?””
I nodded.
“Was it a fall or a physical assault?””
I swallowed.
“My sister kicked me.””
Daniel's expression tightened.
“Okay. We're going to take care of you.””
He checked my pulse and blood pressure while his colleague prepared the stretcher.
“Any bleeding?””
“No.””
“Contractions?””
“I don't know. Everything hurts.””
Marcus held my hand.
“She's been active every day,” he explained.
“She hasn't moved since the impact.””
Daniel nodded.
“We need to get her evaluated immediately.””
As they lifted me, my mother rushed forward.
“Wait! I need to come with her.””
Marcus stepped between them.
“No.””
Linda blinked.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
“I'm her mother!””
“And you spent the last fifteen minutes comforting the person who kicked her.””
My father grabbed Marcus's shoulder.
“Watch your tone.””
Marcus removed his hand.
“Don't touch me.””
I wanted to tell Marcus not to waste his energy arguing.
But I couldn't find enough breath.
The ambulance doors closed.
Through the small rear window, I saw Rachel standing beside my mother.
Her makeup was running.
Her fiancé, Daniel, stood several feet away, staring at her.
He hadn't said a word.
Then Rachel raised her phone.
She was typing furiously.
My own phone vibrated inside my handbag.
Kayla had sent me a message.
*Kayla:* Claire, I saved the original video. Don't let Rachel convince anyone it was an accident.
I tried to respond.
My fingers trembled.
Before I could finish, another message appeared.
*Kayla:* There's something else you need to know. I heard Rachel talking to Aunt Linda before the cookout.
My heart began pounding.
I typed slowly.
*Me:* What did she say?
The three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
Then appeared again.
Finally, Kayla sent one sentence.
*Kayla:* She said she was going to make you lose that baby.
I stared at the screen.
The ambulance siren screamed above us.
Marcus noticed my expression.
“What is it?””
I turned the phone toward him.
He read the message once.
Then again.
His jaw tightened.
“Claire,” he said quietly, “what exactly has your sister been planning?””
I didn't have an answer.
But suddenly, I understood something terrifying.
The kick might not have been an impulse.
May you like
It might have been the plan.
And Rachel had been waiting for the right moment.
