Chapter 14: The Night Before the Cookout
I opened the email with trembling fingers.
There was no greeting.
No explanation.
Just a photograph.
It showed my mother standing outside our house at 10:47 p.m. on the night before the cookout.
She was holding a small black bag.
I stared at the image.
“I don't remember seeing her.””
Marcus examined the photograph.
“Neither do I.””
The sender had attached a second image.
This one showed my mother's car parked outside our garage.
Then came a short message.
*Check your security system. She wasn't visiting to bring baby clothes.*
Marcus immediately opened the security application.
We hadn't reviewed the footage since the cookout.
He searched the recordings from that night.
At 10:43 p.m., a familiar car entered our driveway.
My mother's vehicle.
She stepped out carrying the black bag.
She used the spare key I'd given her months earlier.
Then she walked directly toward the garage.
Marcus paused the footage.
“Why the garage?””
I shook my head.
He opened the next camera recording.
The garage door lifted.
My mother entered.
She stayed inside for eleven minutes.
When she emerged, the bag was empty.
I felt cold.
“What was she doing?””
Marcus searched the footage.
There was another camera inside the garage, pointed toward the storage area.
The image showed my mother opening a cabinet.
She removed a folder.
Then she took something small from the bottom drawer.
I leaned closer.
It was a portable hard drive.
My heart began racing.
“That belongs to us.””
Marcus nodded.
“It contains our financial backups and personal documents.””
“Why would she take it?””
He continued watching.
My mother placed the drive inside her bag.
Then she looked directly toward the camera.
For one second, she stood completely still.
Then she smiled.
Not a nervous smile.
Not an accidental expression.
A deliberate smile.
As though she knew she was being watched.
I covered my mouth.
Marcus immediately called Detective Morgan.
Within an hour, the footage had been preserved and submitted.
But I couldn't stop thinking about the hard drive.
It contained copies of our tax returns, insurance records, mortgage documents, and personal identification files.
Everything someone would need to impersonate us.
“That's how they opened the credit application,” I whispered.
Marcus nodded.
“And possibly how they accessed the insurance information.””
My phone rang.
Mom.
I answered.
“Where's the hard drive?””
Silence.
Then she said, “What hard drive?””
“The one you stole from our garage.””
“Claire, I don't know what you're talking about.””
“We have video.””
Her breathing changed.
Then she lowered her voice.
“Your father told me to get it.””
“Why?””
“He needed certain documents.””
“Which documents?””
“Business paperwork.””
“Why did you take our financial records?””
My mother started crying.
“Because Robert said we had to protect ourselves.””
“From what?””
“From you.””
I closed my eyes.
“Explain.””
She hesitated.
Then she said, “Your father believed you would eventually discover the loan.””
“So you stole our information to hide it?””
“We were trying to prevent things from getting worse.””
“You took our personal documents!””
“Claire, please. Your father said the situation would be temporary.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everything is temporary with you, isn't it? The debt. The lies.
The stolen money. The forged signatures.””
She began sobbing.
Then she said something unexpected.
“Rachel wasn't supposed to hurt you.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What do you mean?””
“Your father only wanted her to frighten you.””
“Frighten me?””
“He wanted you to stop asking questions about the house.””
My blood ran cold.
“Mom, what exactly did Dad tell Rachel to do?””
“I don't know.””
“You do know.””
“I told her not to touch you!””
I gripped the phone.
“Did you know she planned to kick me?””
My mother went silent.
Then she whispered:
“I saw the shoes she chose that morning.””
I stared at the wall.
“What?””
“She asked me whether the heels would leave a mark.””
I couldn't breathe.
My mother continued crying.
“I thought she was joking. I didn't think she'd actually do it.””
I felt Marcus move closer.
I put the call on speaker.
“Why didn't you stop her?””
“Because your father said the whole thing needed to look like an argument.””
I felt sick.
“So you knew there was a plan.””
“I didn't know she would kick you that hard!””
Marcus stepped forward.
“You watched her do it. You watched Claire fall. And you ran to Rachel.””
My mother started sobbing harder.
“I'm sorry!””
I closed my eyes.
“Where is the hard drive?””
She hesitated.
“Robert has it.””
“Where?””
“I don't know.””
“Mom.””
“He said he was going to destroy it.””
The call ended.
Marcus immediately contacted Detective Morgan.
Later that afternoon, the detective called back.
The security footage had helped establish that Linda entered our home and removed property without our permission.
But there was more.
A search conducted under the appropriate legal authority had located the hard drive in Robert's office.
Investigators also recovered a second device.
A laptop.
It contained emails between Robert, Linda, and Rachel.
One message was particularly important.
It had been sent by Robert to Rachel two days before the cookout.
*Robert:* You need to make Claire understand that she cannot keep interfering. The house transfer must be completed before Monday.
Rachel replied:
*Rachel:* What if she refuses?
Robert answered:
*Robert:* Then make sure everyone sees her as the problem. Your mother will handle the witnesses.
I read the exchange twice.
Then I found another message.
It had been sent by Linda.
*Linda:* What if something happens to the baby?
Robert replied:
*Robert:* Then the financial situation becomes much easier. But don't discuss that in writing.
I dropped the phone.
Marcus caught it before it hit the floor.
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
The words were right there.
In black and white.
My father had discussed the possibility of my baby being harmed as though it were a financial advantage.
I pressed both hands over my stomach.
Our daughter moved.
A small, reassuring kick.
I began crying.
Marcus knelt beside me.
“She's okay.””
I nodded.
But I couldn't stop shaking.
The detective called again.
This time, her voice was serious.
“Claire, we've recovered additional messages. There is evidence that your father may have coordinated the financial scheme and attempted to influence what happened at the cookout.””
“Does that mean he planned the assault?””
“We're investigating the extent of his involvement. I don't want to make conclusions before the evidence has been examined.””
I understood.
But I already knew what the messages meant.
My sister had been the person who kicked me.
My mother had helped create the conditions.
And my father had treated my pregnancy like an obstacle to a property transaction.
Then Detective Morgan added:
“Your father has requested a meeting with you.””
I stared at Marcus.
“Why?””
“He says he has information that could change the investigation.””
I swallowed.
“Does he want immunity?””
“He hasn't specified.””
I looked toward the nursery.
The crib was still waiting to be assembled.
The tiny clothes were folded in drawers.
Our daughter's life was approaching, while my family was collapsing under the weight of its own lies.
“Tell him I'll hear what he has to say,” I answered.
Marcus looked at me.
“Claire—”
“Not alone. And only with the detective present.””
He nodded.
Detective Morgan agreed to arrange the meeting.
Before ending the call, she added one final detail.
“Your father claims Rachel wasn't the person who originally suggested the cookout confrontation.””
I felt a chill.
“Who was?””
The detective paused.

Then she answered.
“According to Robert, the idea came from your mother.””
