Chapter 4: The Truth Hidden Behind the Family Smile
For the first time in my life, I understood what it felt like to look at a family photograph and see strangers.
The picture sat on my hospital nightstand.
A frame my mother had brought from home.
It showed all of us three years earlier at my grandmother's birthday dinner.
Everyone was smiling.
Rachel stood beside me, her arm around my shoulders.
My father had one hand resting proudly on my mother's chair.
I remembered that night.
I remembered thinking how lucky I was.
How many people could say they had a sister who knew every secret they had ever carried?
How many people could say their parents would always be there?
I had believed family was the one thing in life that couldn't disappear.
I was wrong.
Because sometimes the people closest to you know exactly where to hurt you.
Marcus sat across from me, reading through the messages from the unknown number.
“We need to save everything.””
“I know.””
“No deleting. No responding. Nothing unless the police tell us.””
I nodded.
But my mind wasn't on the messages.
It was on Rachel.
My sister.
The girl who used to sneak into my room during thunderstorms because she was afraid of lightning.
The girl who taught me how to drive.
The girl who cried harder than I did when our dog died.
How could that person become someone who wanted me to lose everything?
The detective returned later that afternoon.
His name was Detective Harris.
He had a calm voice that somehow made the situation feel more serious.
“We traced the number.””
My heart jumped.
“And?””
“It was a prepaid phone.””
I felt disappointment before I even realized I had hoped for an answer.
“But we found something else.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“What?””
Detective Harris placed a folder on the table.
“We looked into your sister's recent communications.””
I frowned.
“How?””
“She gave permission after speaking with her attorney.””
That surprised me.
“Her attorney?””
The detective nodded.
“She requested one this morning.””
Of course she did.
Rachel always knew how to protect herself.
“She admitted she knew Daniel was at the cookout.””
My stomach tightened.
“But she said she didn't plan the assault.””
I almost laughed.
“Then what does she call it?””
Detective Harris looked at me.
“She says she wanted to scare you.””
My hands shook.
“She wanted to scare a pregnant woman?””
“She claims she didn't expect you to fall.””
Marcus stood up.
“She kicked her.””
“I know.””
“No, you don't.””
His voice was controlled, but I could hear the anger underneath.
“She looked at my wife. She looked at my unborn child. And she made a choice.””
The detective didn't argue.
Because he knew.
Choices mattered.
Especially cruel ones.
Before leaving, he asked one question.
“Claire, did your sister ever have access to your personal information?””
I looked confused.
“What kind of information?””
“Medical records. Financial information. Anything private.””
I thought about it.
Then suddenly, something felt wrong.
A few weeks earlier, Rachel had asked me for my doctor's office information.
She said she wanted to send a gift basket.
I had thought it was sweet.
I had given it to her.
My blood ran cold.
“She knew my doctor.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Claire?””
“She asked.””
The detective's expression changed.
“What else?””
I swallowed.
“She asked about my appointments.””
The room became silent.
“She said she wanted to be involved.””
Detective Harris wrote something down.
“Did she ever attend an appointment?””
“No.””
But then I remembered something else.
The day before the cookout.
Rachel had called me.
She asked what time I usually felt the baby move.
At the time, I thought she was being curious.
Now?
Now it felt different.
“She knew when my daughter was active.””
Marcus grabbed my hand.
“Claire.””
I closed my eyes.
The realization was terrifying.
Rachel wasn't just angry.
She had been watching.
That evening, we left the hospital and went home.
The house felt different.
The same walls.
The same furniture.
But I no longer felt completely safe.
Marcus checked every lock twice.
I didn't make fun of him.
I understood.
Fear changes you.
Around midnight, I heard a sound downstairs.
I froze.
Marcus immediately woke up.
“What happened?””
“Someone is inside.””
He reached for his phone.
We moved quietly.
Every step felt too loud.
The kitchen light was on.
A cabinet door was open.
My heart pounded.
Then I saw her.
Rachel.
Standing beside the counter.
I screamed.
Marcus stepped in front of me.
“What are you doing here?””
Rachel looked terrified.
Not angry.
Terrified.
“I needed to talk to Claire.””
“You broke into our house?””
“I didn't break in.””
She pointed toward the door.
“I still have the spare key.””
That hurt.
Another reminder.
She had once been someone welcome here.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Leave.””
“Please.””
“No.””
Rachel looked at me.
“Claire, listen to me.””
I wanted to look away.
But something in her face stopped me.
She looked broken.
Not the Rachel everyone knew.
Not the confident sister.
Just a woman who had finally realized she had gone too far.
“What aren't you telling me?”” I asked.
Her lips trembled.
“I didn't know Daniel was going to hurt you.””
“But you knew he was planning something.””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
The word destroyed something inside me.
“How long?””
“Two months.””
I felt dizzy.
Two months.
Two months of hugs.
Two months of family dinners.
Two months of pretending.
“What did he tell you?””
Rachel wiped her face.
“He said Marcus was hiding something.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He said you didn't know the truth about him.””
I looked at Marcus.
He looked confused.
“That makes no sense.””
Rachel continued.
“He told me Marcus had another woman before you. That he wasn't the person you thought he was.””
I stared at her.
“And you believed him?””
Rachel looked ashamed.
“I wanted to.””
That answer hurt more than anything.
Because it was honest.
She wanted to believe something terrible about me.
She wanted a reason to hate me.
“Why?””
Rachel's voice became smaller.
“Because I was tired of feeling invisible.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then she reached into her purse.
“I have something.””
She pulled out a folder.
“I found this in Daniel's car.””
Marcus took a step forward.
“What is it?””
Rachel handed it to me.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside were printed emails.
Photos.
Documents.
And one name repeated over and over.
Marcus.
I looked at my husband.
My heart suddenly felt heavy.
Because maybe Rachel had been manipulated.
Maybe she had been jealous.
Maybe she had been wrong.
May you like
But why was Daniel collecting information about Marcus?
And what exactly was he trying to prove?
