Chapter 2: The Secret Behind Her Anger

The next morning, my phone exploded.

Messages from relatives.

Some apologized.

Some asked if I was okay.

Some asked what “really happened.””

That last group bothered me.

Not because they wanted answers.

Because they already suspected I was lying.

I stared at the screen while Marcus made coffee in the hospital room.

“Don't read them,” he said.

“I need to know.””

“No, Claire.””

His voice was softer than usual.

“You need to heal.””

I looked down at my stomach.

My hand rested protectively over our daughter.

“I almost lost her.””

Marcus came closer.

“I know.””

“And my own sister did that.””

His jaw tightened.

He had always been patient.

Almost impossible to anger.

But Rachel had crossed a line even he couldn't ignore.

A nurse entered with paperwork.

“Your sister is asking to see you.””

My entire body froze.

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

The nurse nodded.

“I'll let security know.””

But Rachel didn't leave.

She waited.

Three hours later, she was still outside.

When Marcus went to get food, she appeared in the doorway.

I almost didn't recognize her.

Her hair was messy.

Her eyes were swollen.

She looked like someone who had spent the night crying.

But I remembered the grass.

I remembered the kick.

I remembered her eyes.

“Claire…”

I looked away.

“Why are you here?””

She stepped inside.

“I need you to listen.””

“No.””

“Please.””

I laughed quietly.

A painful, empty sound.

“You kicked me in the stomach while I was pregnant.””

“I know.””

“You watched me fall.””

“I know.””

“You lied.””

Her face crumbled.

“I was scared.””

That sentence made me look at her.

Scared?

She was scared?

I was the one who couldn't feel my baby move.

I was the one carried away in an ambulance.

I was the one wondering if my child would survive.

“What exactly were you scared of?””

Rachel didn't answer.

That was the first honest thing she had done.

Silence.

I waited.

Finally, she whispered:

“Mom and Dad always chose you.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

She laughed bitterly.

“You don't see it.””

“Rachel…”

“No, you don't.””

She stepped closer.

“You always got their sympathy. Every mistake you made was because you were struggling. Every bad choice was because you needed help.””

My mouth opened.

Then closed.

Because I realized something.

Rachel actually believed this.

She had built an entire world inside her head where she was the victim.

“I worked harder than you,” she said.

“I did everything right.””

“Rachel, you got everything you wanted.””

“But I never got what you have.””

I frowned.

“What do I have?””

Her eyes moved toward my stomach.

And suddenly I understood.

The baby.

Rachel wasn't angry about the pregnancy.

She was angry about what it represented.

A new family.

A new beginning.

A future where I was no longer the younger sister following behind her.

“You're jealous of my child?””

She looked away.

“No.””

But she couldn't say it convincingly.

The door opened.

Marcus returned.

The moment Rachel saw him, her expression changed.

The old Rachel returned.

Defensive.

Cold.

“I should go.””

Marcus stepped between us.

“You should.””

She looked at me one final time.

“I hope you're happy.””

Then she walked away.

I sat there, feeling something inside me break.

Not my heart.

Something else.

An illusion.

The belief that family automatically meant love.

That blood meant loyalty.

That a person who shared your childhood couldn't become your enemy.

That evening, Kayla sent me the video.

I almost didn't watch it.

But I needed the truth.

Marcus sat beside me.

The recording started.

The backyard appeared.

Rachel appeared.

Me appeared.

And then the moment happened.

No warning.

No argument.

No attack.

Just Rachel walking toward me.

Just Rachel lifting her foot.

Just Rachel choosing violence.

But then something else happened.

Something I hadn't noticed before.

Before she kicked me, Rachel looked behind her.

At someone.

Someone standing near the patio.

Someone who wasn't visible in the first seconds of the video.

Marcus paused the recording.

“Who is that?””

I leaned closer.

My blood turned cold.

Because standing behind Rachel was someone I recognized.

May you like

Someone who should never have been there.

Someone who knew exactly what she was planning.
