Chapter 3: The Person Who Knew

I watched the video again.

And again.

Every time, the same question became louder.

Who had Rachel been looking at?

The person was partially hidden behind a group of relatives.

A man.

Tall.

Wearing a dark shirt.

I couldn't see his face clearly.

But I knew the way he stood.

The way he held himself.

My stomach twisted.

“No.””

Marcus looked at me.

“Claire?””

I pointed at the screen.

“That can't be him.””

“Who?””

I swallowed.

“My ex.””

Marcus went silent.

Before Marcus, before marriage, before the baby, there had been Daniel.

A relationship I had spent years trying to forget.

Daniel had been charming in the beginning.

Everyone loved him.

Including Rachel.

Too much.

When we broke up, he didn't accept it.

He called.

He showed up.

He blamed Marcus.

Then, eventually, he disappeared.

Or at least I thought he did.

“What would he be doing at our family cookout?”” Marcus asked.

I didn't know.

And that scared me.

The next morning, the police came to take my statement.

For the first time, I said everything out loud.

My sister had intentionally kicked me.

She had lied.

She had tried to change the story.

And someone had been there.

The officer watched the video carefully.

“This appears intentional.””

My hands tightened.

“Can you identify the person in the background?””

I nodded slowly.

“I think so.””

But before I could answer, my phone rang.

Rachel.

I almost ignored it.

Almost.

Then I remembered her face.

Her anger.

Her fear.

I answered.

“What do you want?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Claire, you need to listen to me.””

“I've heard enough lies.””

“No.””

A pause.

Then:

“He was there because of me.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

“You know who.””

I stood up.

Marcus immediately looked concerned.

“Rachel, what did you do?””

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

My voice rose.

“You almost killed my daughter.””

“I know.””

“Stop saying that!””

She started crying.

“I thought he would scare you.””

The room went silent.

Marcus whispered:

“Who?””

I already knew.

Daniel.

“What did he promise you?””

Rachel didn't answer.

And that silence told me everything.

She had not acted alone.

The kick was only the beginning.

There was something bigger happening.

Something planned.

Something my own sister had helped create.

“Rachel,” I said quietly, “why?””

Her voice broke.

“Because I wanted you to lose.””

I felt numb.

Not angry.

Not shocked.

Just numb.

“Lose what?””

She cried harder.

“Everything.””

The call ended.

Marcus took the phone from my hand.

“We go to the police.””

I nodded.

But before we could move, another message appeared.

From an unknown number.

One sentence.

One warning.

Stop digging, Claire. You won't like what you find.

I stared at the screen.

Then at my husband.

Because suddenly, the truth was becoming clear.

Rachel's jealousy wasn't the reason she attacked me.

It was only the excuse.

May you like

Someone had been pulling the strings.

And now they knew I was looking.
