Chapter 3: The Marriage Was the Cover-Up

I didn't sleep.

Not because of the financial documents.

Not even because of the possibility that my husband had committed a crime using my name.

I couldn't sleep because of one sentence.

If she asks for a divorce.

They had discussed what would happen if I left.

They had planned for it.

And somehow, they had decided that the solution was to make me responsible for their crimes.

At 6:40 the next morning, Lily woke up.

"Mommy?""

I turned toward her immediately.

"Good morning, baby.""

She touched her cheek.

"Is it still red?""

I swallowed.

"A little.""

"Did I get in trouble?""

I moved closer and brushed her hair away from her forehead.

"No, sweetheart. You didn't get in trouble.""

"Then why was Aunt Megan mad?""

I struggled to find an answer a five-year-old could understand.

"Sometimes grown-ups make very bad choices. And sometimes they don't know how to say sorry.""

Lily thought about that.

"Will Daddy say sorry?""

The question hurt more than anything that had happened the night before.

"I don't know, baby.""

She looked down at her blanket.

"I don't want to see Aunt Megan again.""

I kissed her forehead.

"You don't have to.""

An hour later, Zoe returned with Daniel and a woman named Rebecca Shaw, a family-law attorney.

Rebecca was in her early fifties, with silver-framed glasses and a voice that never seemed to rise above a calm whisper.

She placed a notebook on the table.

"Chloe, before we discuss the documents, I need to understand your priorities.""

"My daughter.""

Rebecca nodded.

"Good. Then we'll start there.""

She explained that I needed to preserve every message, avoid signing anything, and let the attorneys handle communication about the disputed transactions.

I agreed.

Then she asked something unexpected.

"Do you have access to your husband's financial records?""

"No. We keep separate work accounts, but our household finances are shared.""

"Has Mark ever asked you to sign documents without explaining them?""

I thought about it.

A memory surfaced.

Last March, Mark had placed a thick stack of papers beside my breakfast.

He had said they were routine documents for refinancing one of his investment properties.

I had been preparing for a presentation and hadn't looked closely.

I had signed where he pointed.

My stomach tightened.

"Yes.""

Rebecca stopped writing.

"Do you remember what they were?""

"Not exactly.""

"Can you describe them?""

"Property documents. Maybe some business authorizations.""

Zoe leaned forward.

"Did he give you copies?""

"No.""

Daniel exchanged a glance with Rebecca.

"What?"" I asked.

Rebecca closed her notebook.

"We need to locate those documents.""

"Why?""

She looked at me.

"Because if your signature appears on more than the foundation transfers, we need to know whether someone used those papers to give Mark control over additional assets.""

I stared at her.

"What assets?""

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she asked, "Chloe, did you own property before your marriage?""

"Yes. A small apartment in Columbus. I sold it when we moved to Chicago.""

"Did you inherit anything?""

"My grandmother left me some money. Not much.""

"How much?""

"About $180,000.""

Zoe's expression changed.

"Did you deposit it into a joint account?""

"No. It went into an investment account under my name.""

Daniel pulled out his laptop.

"Do you remember the bank?""

I told him.

He typed something, then stopped.

"Chloe, when was the last time you checked that account?""

My mouth went dry.

"Last summer.""

"How much was in it?""

"About $214,000.""

He looked at me.

"Would you be comfortable checking the current balance?""

I opened the banking app.

The login screen appeared.

I entered my password.

A notification appeared.

*Your account has been restricted. Please contact customer service.*

I stared at the screen.

"That's not possible.""

Zoe moved closer.

"What happened?""

"My account is restricted.""

Daniel took a screenshot of the message with my permission.

Rebecca's voice became very quiet.

"Don't try to move anything. We'll request the records through the appropriate legal channels.""

I looked at Zoe.

"Can Mark access that account?""

"Did you ever give him permission?""

"No.""

"Then we need to find out how this happened.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from Carol.

*CAROL: Your father-in-law has agreed to forgive last night's behavior if you come to the house and apologize to Megan. We expect you at noon.*

I read it aloud.

Zoe shook her head.

"Unbelievable.""

Another message arrived.

This one was from Megan.

*MEGAN: You humiliated me in front of everyone. You owe me an apology. And Lily needs to learn that actions have consequences.*

I felt my stomach twist.

I handed the phone to Rebecca.

"Can you make sure she doesn't contact my daughter?""

"We can discuss protective options. For now, save everything.""

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered cautiously.

"Hello?""

A man's voice came through.

"Mrs. Peterson?""

"Who is this?""

"My name is Thomas Reed. I'm the controller for Peterson Development Holdings.""

I looked at Daniel.

He immediately started recording notes.

"What do you need, Mr. Reed?""

"I was told you might be meeting with Mr. Peterson today.""

"I won't be.""

There was a pause.

Then he said, "You need to be careful. They're preparing to blame you for everything.""

I felt my blood run cold.

"Who is?""

"Your husband. His father. Possibly your mother-in-law.""

"Why are you telling me this?""

His breathing became uneven.

"Because I was the person who prepared the original transfer records. I know whose instructions I followed.""

I gripped the phone.

"Did you prepare documents using my name?""

"Yes.""

"Did I authorize them?""

"No.""

Rebecca silently motioned for me to put the call on speaker.

I did.

Thomas continued.

"Mr. Peterson told me the paperwork was approved by you. Mr. Mark Peterson delivered the signature samples.""

Daniel wrote something down.

"Do you have copies?"" Rebecca asked.

"Yes.""

"Are you willing to provide them?""

Thomas hesitated.

"There's something else.""

"What?""

"The transfers weren't made to cover a temporary cash-flow problem.""

I glanced at Zoe.

Thomas continued.

"The money was moved because the foundation was about to lose its biggest donor.""

"Who was the donor?"" I asked.

He swallowed.

"Your employer.""

The room went silent.

I felt my heart pounding.

"My employer?""

"Yes. Bennett Global.""

I turned toward Zoe.

Her expression had become unreadable.

Thomas continued.

"Your husband knew the company was considering a major acquisition. He believed the Peterson family could use the information to make money before the deal became public.""

Zoe stood up.

"What information?""

"I don't know all the details. But Mark had been asking questions about confidential acquisition timelines.""

Zoe's face went pale.

I looked at her.

"Is that true?""

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she asked Thomas, "Who else knows?""

"Mr. Peterson. Mark. Megan.""

My head snapped up.

"Megan?""

"She was involved in arranging meetings and moving documents.""

I remembered Megan at Thanksgiving.

Her expensive dress.

Her diamond bracelet.

The way she had looked at my daughter as if the child were beneath her.

And suddenly, something else occurred to me.

"Why was she so angry with Lily?""

Nobody spoke.

Then Thomas said something that changed everything.

"Because Megan was supposed to marry a man from the donor's family, and your daughter accidentally revealed something she wasn't supposed to know.""

I frowned.

"What are you talking about?""

Thomas hesitated.

"Last Sunday, Lily was playing in Mr. Peterson's study. She found a photograph and asked Megan why she was standing next to a man who wasn't her husband.""

My mouth went dry.

"What photograph?""

"A photograph of Megan and Andrew Collins.""

Zoe's eyes widened.

Andrew Collins was the chairman of Bennett Global's largest institutional investment partner.

A married man.

And a man whose relationship with Megan could destroy several carefully negotiated business arrangements.

Thomas continued.

"Mrs. Peterson, there's one more thing. Megan wasn't just worried about your daughter telling you what she saw.""

"What was she worried about?""

"She was afraid Lily had found the envelope hidden behind the photograph.""

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"What envelope?""

Thomas took a shaky breath.

"The original agreement proving who really owns Peterson Development Holdings.""

Then he said the name.

"Chloe Peterson.""

I stopped breathing.

Because I had never owned Peterson Development Holdings.

At least, that's what Mark had told me for seven years.

And now a man who had worked inside the company was telling me that my name was on its original ownership documents.

But before I could ask another question, Thomas whispered:

"Whatever you do, don't let Frank find out that I called you. He already knows where the original agreement is.""

The call disconnected.

And for the first time since Thanksgiving dinner, I understood why the Petersons had been so desperate to keep me quiet.

They hadn't just stolen money.

May you like

They had stolen something that belonged to me.

And they were terrified I was about to discover exactly how much.
