Chapter 2: The Account Nobody Was Supposed to Find
The hotel suite smelled like fresh coffee, expensive soap, and the faint vanilla scent of the candle Zoe had lit near the fireplace.
Lily was asleep on the enormous bed, wearing a borrowed pair of pink pajamas.
A pediatrician had checked her cheek and confirmed there was no serious injury. Still, the red mark remained visible.
I couldn't stop looking at it.
Every time I closed my eyes, I heard the slap again.
Zoe sat across from me with a folder open on the coffee table.
Daniel had left to coordinate with the attorneys.
For several minutes, neither of us spoke.
Finally, I asked the question that had been eating at me.
"What did Mark mean?""
Zoe placed her coffee down.
"Chloe, I need you to understand something. This isn't just about your in-laws' foundation.""
"Then what is it about?""
"Your husband.""
I stared at her.
"Mark?""
"Yes.""
I shook my head.
"Mark works in commercial real estate. He has nothing to do with my company's finances.""
Zoe looked at me carefully.
"Are you sure?""
My throat tightened.
"What are you saying?""
She opened the folder and pulled out a printed document.
It contained a list of bank transfers.
Several were dated years earlier.
Some were for relatively small amounts. Others were in the hundreds of thousands.
I recognized one name immediately.
Peterson Development Holdings.
"What is this?""
"Money transferred from the foundation into several private accounts.""
"Why are you showing me this?""
Zoe pointed to a line near the bottom.
My name was there.
Chloe Bennett Peterson.
I stopped breathing.
"No.""
Zoe didn't look away.
"Your signature appears on the authorization.""
"That's impossible.""
"I know.""
I grabbed the document.
The signature looked similar to mine.
But it wasn't mine.
I had never authorized a transfer of $275,000.
"Who submitted this?""
Zoe hesitated.
"Mark.""
The room seemed to tilt.
"You're telling me my husband forged my signature?""
"We have evidence suggesting that.""
I stood up.
"No. Mark wouldn't do that.""
Zoe remained seated.
"Chloe, I wouldn't show you this if I weren't certain something serious had happened.""
"Then why didn't you tell me six months ago?""
"Because at that point, we didn't know whether you were involved.""
I stared at her.
She continued quietly.
"Your professional credentials were used to create a false compliance trail. Someone wanted the transfers to look legitimate. Your name was useful because you had access to financial systems and a reputation for being meticulous.""
I felt sick.
"How much?""
Zoe turned another page.
"Approximately $2.8 million is currently unaccounted for.""
I sat down.
"That's impossible.""
"I wish it were.""
"Does Mark know?""
Zoe's expression answered before her mouth did.
"He was involved in the transactions.""
I pressed my palms against my forehead.
For seven years, I had believed Mark was a decent man who simply struggled to stand up to his family.
He wasn't perfect.
He could be selfish, passive, and sometimes embarrassingly concerned with his parents' opinions.
But I had never imagined this.
"Why would he use my name?""
"Because you were the easiest person to blame if the transfers were discovered.""
I looked at Lily.
She was sleeping with one hand tucked beneath her cheek.
My little girl.
My entire world.
"Did he know what would happen to me?""
Zoe's voice softened.
"That's what we're trying to establish.""
I picked up my phone.
There were twenty-three missed calls.
Seventeen from Mark.
Four from Carol.
Two from unknown numbers.
A message appeared while I was looking at the screen.
*MARK: Come home. We need to talk like adults.*
Another followed.
*MARK: My parents are furious. You embarrassed everyone tonight.*
Then:
*MARK: You need to tell Zoe to stay out of our business.*
I stared at the messages.
Not one asked whether Lily was okay.
Not one apologized.
I typed a response.
*CHLOE: Is my signature on a $275,000 transfer?*
The typing indicator appeared immediately.
Disappeared.
Appeared again.
Then:
*MARK: What are you talking about?*
I sent him a photograph of the document.
This time, he called.
I answered and put the phone on speaker.
"Mark?""
His voice was low.
"Where are you?""
"Answer my question.""
"Chloe, this isn't the time.""
"Did you forge my signature?""
A long silence.
Then he sighed.
"Your sister-in-law is manipulating you.""
"Zoe isn't my sister-in-law. Megan is.""
"Don't play games.""
I felt something cold settle in my chest.
"Did you use my name to move money from your father's foundation?""
"Those transfers were temporary.""
"Temporary?""
"Chloe, you don't understand how complicated these things are.""
"Then explain them.""
He lowered his voice.
"Listen to me. My father was dealing with a cash-flow problem. We moved some money around. It was going to be returned.""
"Why did you use my signature?""
"Because your compliance credentials made the paperwork easier.""
I closed my eyes.
There it was.
Not a denial.
Not even an excuse that made sense.
Just an admission.
"You knew?""
"Chloe, don't make this bigger than it is.""
I almost laughed.
"Nearly three million dollars is not small.""
His voice sharpened.
"Do you have any idea what happens if the foundation gets investigated?""
"Yes. I imagine somebody might go to prison.""
"Watch your mouth.""
I looked at Zoe.
She was already writing something down.
Then Mark said, "You need to come home tomorrow. My father wants to speak with you.""
"Why?""
"Because we're going to fix this.""
"How?""
He paused.
"You're going to sign a statement confirming you authorized the transactions.""
My fingers tightened around the phone.
"You want me to confess to something I didn't do?""
"It's the only way to protect everybody.""
"Everybody?""
"Yes, Chloe. The family.""
I looked at Lily.
Then I remembered the red mark on her cheek.
"Mark, your family watched your sister slap our daughter.""
"That's unrelated.""
"No," I whispered.
"I think it's the most related thing in the world.""
He exhaled angrily.
"You're being emotional.""
I ended the call.
For a moment, the room was completely silent.
Then Zoe spoke.
"Now you understand why I brought the SUVs.""
I nodded.
But my hands were shaking.
"Can they prove I didn't sign those documents?""
Zoe closed the folder.
"We can prove a lot of things. But there's something else you need to know.""
She reached into her briefcase and pulled out another envelope.
This one was addressed to Mark.
It had been recovered from an office belonging to Peterson Development Holdings.
Zoe slid it across the table.
I opened it.
Inside was a photocopy of an email chain.
The first message was from Frank.
The second was from Mark.
The final message had been sent three weeks before Thanksgiving.
I read it twice.
Then a third time.
May you like
Because the final sentence made my stomach turn.
*Once Chloe signs the confession, we can finally stop worrying about what happens if she asks for a divorce.*
