Chapter 11: The Signature That Could Cost Me Everything

I read the document three times.

Each time, the words became more disturbing.

It was a conditional transfer of voting authority over Peterson Development Holdings.

The agreement named Mark Peterson as the temporary controlling representative if I became legally incapacitated or unavailable.

My grandmother's signature appeared at the bottom.

So did my father's.

I looked up.

"Why did you both sign this?""

My father sat down heavily.

"Because Frank had threatened to have you taken away.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

"Not physically. Through the courts. He had evidence prepared to make it appear that you were involved in financial crimes. He told us that if we didn't give Mark temporary authority, he would make sure you lost everything.""

My grandmother wiped her eyes.

"We believed we were buying time.""

I shook my head.

"You gave my husband control of my company.""

"We thought he would protect you.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Mark?""

My grandmother lowered her head.

"We were wrong.""

Rebecca took the document.

"There's something important here.""

She examined the final paragraph.

"The agreement only becomes effective if Chloe is formally declared incapacitated or legally unavailable. It also requires an independent medical assessment and a court order.""

I stared.

"Then why did Mark file that petition?""

"Because he's trying to manufacture the conditions.""

Zoe leaned forward.

"He's trying to make it look as though Chloe is unstable, financially reckless, and responsible for her father's disappearance.""

My father nodded.

"That's exactly what Frank did to me.""

I looked at him.

"How?""

"Before the accident, Frank arranged for me to be accused of embezzling money from the company. He wanted me discredited before I could expose the real transactions.""

My grandmother continued.

"Your father discovered that the company was being used to conceal ownership of several properties. One of them contained records connecting Frank to a series of fraudulent construction contracts.""

"Why didn't he go to the police?""

"He did.""

My father stared at the floor.

"But the evidence disappeared. The investigator assigned to the case was connected to Frank.""

I felt anger building in my chest.

"So you both decided to disappear instead?""

"We decided to survive," my father said quietly.

I looked at the document again.

"Why didn't you tell me the truth before I married Mark?""

My grandmother began crying.

"Because we thought he loved you.""

"Did he?""

Neither answered.

That was answer enough.

Rebecca closed the folder.

"Chloe, I need you to understand that this document doesn't automatically give Mark control. We have grounds to challenge it, especially if it was signed under duress.""

"Can we stop him?""

"Yes, but we need evidence of what he's doing now.""

Zoe stood.

"Then let's get it.""

She called Daniel.

"Have you checked the latest corporate filings?""

He answered almost immediately.

Zoe listened.

Then her expression changed.

"Send me the document.""

A few seconds later, her phone chimed.

She opened the attachment.

It was a corporate resolution.

The document claimed that I had voluntarily resigned as managing member of Peterson Development Holdings.

My signature appeared beneath the statement.

I felt my stomach turn.

"That's forged.""

Rebecca nodded.

"Almost certainly. But we need to establish it.""

The resolution was dated the previous afternoon.

It had been submitted electronically.

And it named Mark as the new managing member.

"How did he get this accepted?""

Daniel's voice came through Zoe's phone.

"The filing was processed using an authorization certificate connected to Chloe's old compliance account.""

I frowned.

"I never gave him access to that.""

"Someone did," Daniel replied.

Zoe looked at me.

"Who had access to your laptop during the marriage?""

I thought about it.

Mark had occasionally used my computer to print documents.

He knew my passwords.

He had once helped me set up the security software.

I felt sick.

"He did.""

Daniel continued.

"There's more. The resolution was submitted by an attorney representing Mark.""

"Who?""

He hesitated.

"Richard Hale.""

I looked at my grandmother.

She shook her head.

"Richard died.""

"Not that Richard," Daniel said.

He sent another attachment.

The attorney's name was Richard Hale Jr.

The son of the lawyer who had handled my grandmother's estate.

I remembered meeting him once at a family gathering.

He had been polite.

Quiet.

And always seemed unusually interested in Mark's business.

My grandmother looked horrified.

"His father would never have allowed this.""

My father turned toward her.

"Apparently, his son doesn't share his principles.""

Rebecca immediately began preparing a challenge to the filing.

Then my phone rang.

Mark.

I answered.

"What do you want?""

His voice sounded almost cheerful.

"Good morning, Chloe.""

I said nothing.

"I heard you've been spending time with your father.""

"Yes.""

"That's wonderful. I always thought you deserved closure.""

I stared at the phone.

"Stop pretending.""

He sighed.

"You're making this unnecessarily difficult.""

"You forged my signature.""

"I filed a corporate resolution.""

"You used my credentials.""

"Because you were unavailable.""

"I was never unavailable.""

"Chloe, the company needs someone capable of managing it.""

I laughed.

"Someone capable? You?""

His voice hardened.

"Your father disappeared for twenty years. Your grandmother spent eight years pretending to be dead. You've been dragging a five-year-old through a financial scandal. Do you honestly believe a judge will let you control millions of dollars?""

I gripped the phone.

"Don't talk about Lily.""

"Then stop putting her in the middle of this.""

I felt something inside me snap.

"You let your sister slap her.""

"That has nothing to do with the company.""

"It has everything to do with the kind of man you are.""

He lowered his voice.

"Listen carefully. Come to the Peterson house tomorrow morning. Sign the resignation documents.

Give me the company. I'll arrange a generous settlement, and you can take Lily wherever you want.""

I looked at Rebecca.

She was silently recording the call.

"And if I refuse?""

"Then I'll make sure you lose everything.""

I paused.

"Mark, did you know my father was alive when you married me?""

Silence.

Then:

"Yes.""

My heart stopped.

"You knew?""

"Not at first.""

"When?""

"Three years into our marriage.""

"How?""

He sighed.

"Frank told me.""

I felt tears sting my eyes.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because your father asked me not to.""

I froze.

"What?""

"Michael contacted me. He said he wanted to protect you. He asked me to keep quiet.""

My father stood abruptly.

"That's a lie!"" he shouted.

Mark heard him.

"Oh, he's there?""

I looked at my father.

Mark laughed softly.

"Then ask him what he promised my father in exchange for staying away.""

My father went pale.

I turned toward him.

"What is he talking about?""

Mark continued.

"Ask him about the original agreement. Ask him what happened to the money your mother left behind.""

Then he ended the call.

I stared at my father.

"What's the original agreement?""

He didn't answer.

My grandmother began crying.

"Michael...""

He looked at her.

"She deserves to know.""

I stepped forward.

"Know what?""

My father finally met my eyes.

"Your mother left you something before she died.""

"What?""

"Not money. Not property.""

He reached into his coat and pulled out a small photograph.

It showed my mother holding a newborn baby.

Me.

On the back, she had written:

For Chloe, when she's old enough to know the truth.

My father turned it over.

There was another sentence beneath it.

The person who caused my death is the person who will one day claim to love you most.

I looked at him.

"What does that mean?""

He closed his eyes.

Then he whispered:

"Your mother suspected Mark's family would eventually try to put him in control of everything. She left a confession with someone she trusted.""

"Who?""

My father looked toward Rebecca.

"Carol Peterson.""

I stared.

"Carol?""

He nodded.

"Your mother knew Carol had helped arrange the cover-up. But before she died, Carol secretly recorded a conversation with Frank.""

My grandmother covered her mouth.

"Michael, no.""

He continued.

"That recording contains the truth about your mother's death.""

I felt my pulse racing.

"Where is it?""

My father looked at me.

"Carol has it.""

At that exact moment, my phone received a new message.

It was from Carol.

*CAROL: I have something your mother wanted you to hear. Meet me alone tomorrow. If you bring Zoe, your lawyers, or the police, the recording disappears forever.*

May you like

Then another message arrived.

*CAROL: And Chloe, there's something else. Mark wasn't the only person who knew your father was alive. Your daughter knew too.*
