Chapter 6: The Sister I Never Knew Existed
The room felt like it had forgotten how to breathe.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
My mother’s words hung in the air like a confession.
“She was never supposed to come back.””
I stared at Diane.
The woman who had packed my lunches as a child.
The woman who held my hand when I was afraid of the dark.
The woman who cried when I left for college.
The same woman who had just admitted she spent years hiding people from me.
First Ryan.
Now Lily.
How many more people had disappeared from my life because my mother decided I wasn’t allowed to know the truth?
“Mom…”
My voice came out quieter than I expected.
“Who is Lily?””
Diane looked at me.
For a second, I saw the mother I remembered.
The one who loved me.
The one who was scared.
But then I remembered Emily on the kitchen floor.
I remembered her face being pushed toward the trash.
I remembered my mother’s desperation.
And I realized fear could make people do terrible things.
“She’s your sister.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Diane closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
“No.””
I stepped backward.
“I don’t have a sister.””
Ryan spoke through the phone.
“You do, Daniel.””
I looked down.
The truth was becoming something I could feel physically.
Like a weight pressing against my chest.
“Where is she?””
Nobody answered.
That scared me more than anything.
Because if Lily was alive, why had nobody told me?
And if she wasn’t…
Why did my mother sound afraid of her coming back?
“Where is she?””
I asked again.
Diane whispered:
“I don’t know.””
I stared at her.
“You don’t know?””
She shook her head.
“She disappeared.””
Ryan interrupted.
“She didn’t disappear.””
My eyes moved to the phone.
“What?””
“Someone made sure she had to leave.””
I looked at Diane.
My mother looked away.
The silence was enough.
“Mom.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Please.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You don’t get to ask me for patience anymore.””
She looked hurt.
But I continued.
“I spent my entire life believing I knew my family.””
I pointed toward the safe.
“I thought that was my father’s last secret.””
I looked at Emily.
“But everyone knew something except me.””
Emily lowered her eyes.
I immediately regretted the pain in her expression.
But I couldn’t stop.
Not yet.
I needed answers.
“I need to know everything.””
Ryan said quietly:
“That’s what your father wanted.””
I turned toward the phone.
“What did he know about Lily?””
Ryan sighed.
“Everything.””
“Then why didn’t he tell me?””
“Because he promised her.””
“Promised who?””
“Lily.””
I frowned.
“What kind of promise?””
Ryan’s voice became softer.
“That he would protect her until she was ready.””
I looked at my mother.
“Ready for what?””
Nobody answered.
Then Emily spoke.
“She was afraid.””
Everyone looked at her.
My wife stood beside the desk, one hand resting on her stomach.
“Lily was afraid too.””
I stared at her.
“How do you know?””
Emily took a deep breath.
“Because I met her.””
The words hit me.
“You met her?””
My voice rose.
“When?””
Emily looked guilty.
“Before we got married.””
I felt like the ground disappeared again.
Before we got married.
Another secret.
Another piece of my life happening behind my back.
“You knew her?””
“I didn’t know who she was.””
That confused me.
“What does that mean?””
Emily sat down slowly.
“My father introduced me to her.””
“Why?””
“He said she needed help.””
I waited.
“He never told me she was your sister.””
I looked at Ryan.
“He knew?””
“Yes.””
“Everyone knew.””
Nobody corrected me.
Emily continued.
“Lily was different from what your mother wanted you to believe.””
I looked at Diane.
“What did she tell people?””
Diane remained silent.
Ryan answered.
“She told people Lily was unstable.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“Was she?””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
“She was hurt.””
Ryan’s voice became heavier.
“Imagine finding out your mother gave you away. Imagine learning she built a new family and never came looking for you.””
I looked down.
Because suddenly I understood something.
Lily wasn’t just a secret.
She was a person who had spent decades wondering why she wasn’t enough.
“She hated us?””
Ryan was quiet.
“Not you.””
I looked up.
“Why not?””
“Because she never knew you existed.””
That hurt.
A person who shared my blood had lived her entire life without knowing me.
And I had lived mine without knowing her.
“How did Dad find her?””
Ryan answered:
“After you were born.””
I looked confused.
“Why after I was born?””
“Because that was when he discovered the truth.””
My chest tightened.
“What truth?””
Ryan hesitated.
Then said:
“That Diane had lied about everything.””
My mother looked away.
“Your father believed he was building a family. He didn’t know Diane had abandoned Lily before they met.””
I frowned.
“Why would she abandon her?””
Diane finally spoke.
“Because I was young.””
Her voice was shaking.
“I was nineteen.””
Nobody interrupted.
“I had no money. No support. Lily’s father left before she was born.””
She wiped her face.
“I was scared.””
I stared at her.
“So you gave her away?””
“I thought it was temporary.””
The words stunned me.
“Temporary?””
She nodded.
“I thought I would get my life together and bring her back.””
“But you never did.””
Tears rolled down her face.
“I tried.””
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“No, you didn’t.””
The anger in his voice surprised me.
“You tried to erase the evidence that she existed.””
My mother looked at him.
“That’s not true.””
“Then why did you change your name in every record?””
Silence.
“Why did you tell people she died?””
My heart dropped.
“You told people she died?””
Diane looked broken.
“I panicked.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“She was your daughter.””
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice became louder.
“You don’t get to say that like it fixes anything.””
Diane covered her face.
“I was afraid.””
I shook my head.
“Fear isn’t an excuse for destroying someone’s life.””
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone knew I was right.
Then Ryan said:
“There’s something else you need to know.””
I looked at the phone.
“What now?””
“Lily didn’t come back because she wanted revenge.””
“Then why?””
“Because she found something.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“A document your father left behind.””
I looked at the safe.
“The safe?””
“No.””
Ryan paused.
“Something bigger.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What?””
“A recording.””
The room became silent.
“A recording of what?””
Ryan answered:
“Your father confronting Diane.””
My mother immediately stood.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“No one was supposed to hear that.””
My heart began pounding.
“You heard it?””
Diane looked terrified.
“Yes.””
“When?””
“The night before your father died.””
The words felt like a punch.
“The night before?””
She nodded.
“He found out about Lily.””
I felt cold.
“What happened?””
Diane looked toward the window.
“I told him the truth.””
“And?””
“He was devastated.””
I swallowed.
“Did he fight with you?””
She didn’t answer.
“Mom.””
“Yes.””
Her voice broke.
“We argued.””
“How badly?””
She closed her eyes.
“Badly.””
I felt my stomach twist.
Ryan spoke.
“That recording is why Lily came back.””
“Why?””
“Because your father recorded the conversation for a reason.””
“What reason?””
Ryan’s voice lowered.
“Because he knew Diane would try to rewrite history.””
My mother shook her head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Ryan didn’t hesitate.
“He knew you would deny everything.””
I looked at Diane.
She was crying.
But I couldn’t tell if it was regret or fear.
“What was on the recording?””
Ryan answered:
“The truth about the night Michael died.””
The room froze.
My father.
His death.
The mystery.
The thing everyone kept circling around.
“What truth?””
Ryan said:
“Your father didn’t die after an ordinary argument.””
My heart pounded.
“What happened?””
“He was preparing to tell you everything.””
I looked at Emily.
She looked terrified.
“And someone tried to stop him.””
The words settled over us.
Someone.
Not something.
Someone.
I looked at my mother.
“Are you saying my father was killed?””
Ryan didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“I’m saying Lily knows what happened.””
I felt a chill.
“Where is she?””
Ryan exhaled.
“She contacted me yesterday.””
My eyes widened.
“She’s alive?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
A pause.
Then he said:
“She wants to meet you.””
I waited.
But his next words made my blood run cold.
“However…”
“However what?””
Ryan’s voice dropped.
“She told me not to bring you to her.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because she thinks someone is watching you.””
The room went silent.
My eyes moved around the house.
The place I had always considered safe.
The place where my wife had nearly been hurt.
The place where my mother had searched for secrets.
“Who?””
Ryan whispered:
“She thinks the person who destroyed your father’s life…”
May you like
A pause.
“…is still trying to hide the truth.””
