Chapter 3: The Secret My Wife Carried Before She Met Me

The envelope felt heavier than it should have.

It was just paper.

A few sheets hidden inside.

Something that should have weighed almost nothing.

But as I held it in my hands, it felt like I was holding every lie my family had ever told me.

The words written on the front stared back at me.

For Daniel. When the truth comes.

My fingers tightened.

“Emily…”

My voice barely sounded like my own.

“Why does your father have a letter for me?””

She looked away.

That hurt more than anything.

Because Emily had always been honest with me.

Or at least, I thought she had.

For five years, she had been my best friend, my partner, the person I trusted more than anyone.

I knew the way she laughed when she was nervous.

I knew she hated thunderstorms.

I knew she cried during every sad movie even when she pretended she didn’t.

I knew everything about her.

Or I thought I did.

But now I was standing in a room full of secrets, realizing there were parts of her life she had kept locked away.

“Emily.””

She closed her eyes.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

She flinched.

The question came out sharper than I intended.

But I couldn’t stop it.

“When were you going to tell me that your father left me a letter?””

Tears gathered in her eyes.

“When I understood what it meant.””

I looked at the envelope.

“What does it mean?””

“I don’t know everything.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone kept saying that.

My mother.

Emily.

My father’s letter.

Nobody knew everything.

But somehow, everyone knew more than me.

“I need you to start from the beginning.””

Emily nodded slowly.

She sat down on the edge of the old chair in my father’s study.

I noticed she was still protecting her stomach with one hand.

Even now.

Even after everything.

Her first instinct was still to protect our baby.

That made my anger weaken.

But it didn’t disappear.

“My father’s name was Ryan Collins.””

The name echoed through my mind.

Ryan.

The secret brother.

The person I had never known existed.

“The man your mother just told you about.””

I swallowed.

“So your father knew my father?””

Emily nodded.

“Yes.””

“How?””

She looked at the floor.

“Because they grew up together.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does.””

She looked at me.

“They weren’t just friends, Daniel.””

The silence that followed felt unbearable.

“They were brothers.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Emily took a shaky breath.

“Not by blood.””

She quickly added.

“By choice.””

I stared at her.

“My father grew up without a family. Your grandfather took him in when they were teenagers. Your father treated him like a younger brother.””

I looked at Diane.

My mother stood frozen near the doorway.

She knew this story.

“I don’t understand.””

Emily continued.

“Your father and mine were incredibly close. They built businesses together. They trusted each other with everything.””

“Then why have I never heard of him?””

Nobody answered.

That was becoming the pattern of my life.

Questions.

Silence.

Secrets.

I turned toward my mother.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Diane finally spoke.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked at the letter.

“Of losing you.””

I stared at her.

“You thought telling me the truth would make me stop loving you?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“No.””

My voice became quiet.

“That’s the problem.””

I looked around the room.

“I don’t know anything.””

Nobody argued.

Because it was true.

Emily opened the envelope.

“I found this after my father died.””

I looked at her.

“You opened it?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“And you read it?””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

But somehow, it hurt less than another lie.

“What did it say?””

Emily hesitated.

Then she handed me the first page.

“My father wrote it before he died.””

I unfolded the paper.

The handwriting was different from my father’s.

But the message was just as terrifying.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, then the truth has finally reached you.

I felt my stomach tighten.

I wish I could have told you myself. I wish I had been brave enough to face the consequences of my choices.

But some mistakes become so large that people spend their entire lives running from them.

I continued.

Your father was the only person who knew the complete story.

My eyes moved quickly.

He loved you more than anyone in the world. Never question that.

I paused.

A strange pain hit my chest.

Because no matter what secrets existed, I knew that part was true.

My father loved me.

I felt it every day I knew him.

But love does not erase the truth.

The next sentence made my breathing stop.

The baby Emily is carrying is connected to a promise your father and I made many years ago.

I looked up.

“What promise?””

Emily shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

I read further.

Diane was never supposed to find out.

My eyes lifted immediately.

My mother looked away.

She spent years searching for proof. She believed the truth would destroy her life. She never understood that hiding it was what destroyed everyone.

I folded the paper slightly.

“What is this truth?””

Emily whispered.

I did.

Daniel, there is something you need to know about your father.

The room became silent.

He knew Ryan was alive.

I stopped.

“What?””

My father knew?

My father knew about Ryan?

The secret brother I had never known existed?

I looked at my mother.

Her face told me everything.

She knew.

My father knew.

Everyone knew.

Except me.

Your father found Ryan years ago.

The letter continued.

He wanted to bring him back into your life.

But Diane refused.

My mother immediately stepped forward.

“That’s not true.””

I looked at her.

“Isn’t it?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was enough.

“Why?””

My voice cracked.

“Why would you keep my own brother away from me?””

Diane looked broken.

“Because I thought I was protecting you.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I shook my head.

“But nobody tells me what they were protecting me from.””

My mother sat down slowly.

For the first time, she looked old.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like carrying this secret had aged her.

“Ryan was not just your father’s friend.””

She whispered.

“He was part of our family.””

“Then why hide him?””

Diane looked at Emily.

Then at the letter.

Then back at me.

“Because Ryan knew something.””

My heart started racing.

“What?””

She swallowed.

“Something about your father’s death.””

The room went silent.

I felt a chill move through me.

“My father died of a heart attack.””

Diane looked down.

“That’s what everyone believed.””

I stared at her.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying your father’s death wasn’t as simple as you think.””

My hands became cold.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No, don’t do this.””

I couldn’t handle another secret.

Another hidden truth.

Another piece of my life being ripped away.

My father was gone.

That was the one thing I thought I understood.

Diane reached toward me.

I stepped back.

“Don’t.””

The pain on her face was obvious.

But I couldn’t comfort her.

Not yet.

Not after what I had learned.

Emily slowly stood.

“Daniel.””

I looked at her.

“There’s more.””

Of course there was.

There was always more.

“What?””

She looked toward the second page.

“My father wrote one more thing.””

I waited.

She handed it to me.

The final paragraph was shorter.

But it was the one that changed everything.

Daniel, if Diane has discovered the key, then she knows Ryan is about to come back.

My heart stopped.

Come back?

I looked up.

“Ryan is alive?””

Emily nodded.

“Yes.””

I stared at her.

“How do you know?””

“Because he contacted me.””

The room spun.

“When?””

Emily’s lips trembled.

“Two weeks ago.””

I felt something inside me break.

Two weeks.

She had known for two weeks.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because he told me not to.””

I stared at her.

“He told you to keep a secret from me?””

“He said your mother would do anything to stop the truth from coming out.””

I looked at Diane.

And for the first time, I wondered if my mother’s actions in the kitchen were not about anger.

They were desperation.

She wasn’t trying to punish Emily.

She was trying to stop her from finding something.

Something that could expose her.

My eyes moved back to the letter.

One final line sat at the bottom.

A warning.

A sentence written like my father knew exactly what would happen.

Daniel, trust carefully. The person who fears the truth the most is usually the person who has the most to lose.

I lowered the paper.

Nobody spoke.

Then my phone rang.

The sound cut through the silence.

I looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

Normally, I would have ignored it.

But something told me not to.

I answered.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a man spoke.

A voice I had never heard before.

But somehow…

It felt familiar.

“Daniel?””

I froze.

“Yes?””

The man took a shaky breath.

“My name is Ryan Collins.””

My entire body went numb.

“I think it’s time we talked.””

I couldn’t speak.

May you like

Then he said the words that made me realize my family’s nightmare was only beginning.

“I know what happened to your father.””
