Chapter 4: The Man Who Knew Why My Father Died
For a few seconds, I forgot how to breathe.
The voice on the phone was calm.
Too calm.
Like he had spent years preparing for this exact moment.
“Daniel?””
I gripped the phone tighter.
My eyes moved around the room.
My mother.
My wife.
The letter.
The DNA report.
Everything I thought I understood about my life had collapsed in less than an hour.
And now a stranger was telling me he knew the truth about my father’s death.
“Who are you?””
There was a pause.
Then the man answered.
“I already told you.””
His voice was rough.
Older than I expected.
“My name is Ryan Collins.””
I looked at Emily.
Her face had gone pale.
She knew.
She had known this man was going to call.
My mother noticed too.
The second she saw Emily’s expression, fear crossed her face.
Not anger.
Not surprise.
Fear.
I walked toward the window, putting distance between myself and everyone else.
“How did you get my number?””
“Your wife gave it to me.””
I turned around.
Emily looked down.
My heart sank.
Another secret.
Another thing I didn’t know.
“When?””
“A few weeks ago.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Of course there was more.
I lowered my voice.
“Why?””
Ryan didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Because she was trying to find out the truth before it destroyed you.””
I looked at Emily.
She looked like she wanted to explain.
But I raised my hand.
Not now.
I couldn’t handle another conversation where everyone knew pieces of my life except me.
“Tell me about my father.””
The line went quiet.
For a moment, I wondered if he had hung up.
Then Ryan spoke.
“Your father was the best man I ever knew.””
The words surprised me.
I didn’t expect kindness.
I expected accusations.
Blame.
Anger.
Instead, I heard pain.
“He saved my life more than once.””
I leaned against the wall.
“Then why did he hide you from me?””
A long silence followed.
Finally, Ryan answered.
“Because he wasn’t hiding me from you.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“He was protecting you from someone else.””
My eyes immediately moved to my mother.
Diane noticed.
Her expression changed.
“Daniel…”
I ignored her.
“Who?””
Ryan took a deep breath.
“Your mother.””
The room went completely silent.
My mother’s face changed.
“Hang up.””
Everyone looked at her.
The command came quickly.
Too quickly.
I stared at her.
“Why?””
She shook her head.
“Because he’s lying.””
Ryan heard her.
“I wondered how long it would take before Diane tried to silence me again.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“You know my mother?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Ryan’s voice became heavier.
“Because she was the person who destroyed my family.””
My mother stepped forward.
“That’s enough.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
But firm.
“I need to hear this.””
Diane stopped.
For once, she didn’t argue.
Ryan continued.
“Daniel, I know what your father told you about his death.””
I swallowed.
“He died from a heart attack.””
“Yes.””
“Was that not true?””
“It was.””
I was confused.
“Then what are you talking about?””
Ryan sighed.
“Your father’s death wasn’t caused by what happened that night.””
I felt a chill.
“What does that mean?””
“It means the heart attack was real.””
He paused.
“But the reason he was under that much stress wasn’t.””
I looked at the letter.
At the old handwriting.
At my father’s warning.
“What happened?””
Ryan didn’t answer right away.
Instead, he asked:
“Do you remember the year your father changed his will?””
I thought back.
The question seemed random.
“After I graduated college?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Ryan’s voice dropped.
“Because he discovered Diane had been moving money.””
My stomach tightened.
My mother immediately shook her head.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“You did?””
“I didn’t steal anything.””
Ryan continued.
“She wasn’t stealing.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She was hiding it.””
My confusion deepened.
“What’s the difference?””
“Your father had discovered that money from one of his accounts was being transferred into another account.””
“Whose?””
Ryan hesitated.
Then said:
“Mine.””
The room went silent.
My mother looked away.
I felt like I was watching strangers wearing familiar faces.
“My mother gave you money?””
Ryan corrected me.
“Your father did.””
I looked at the phone.
“Why?””
“Because he knew I was his responsibility.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t understand.””
Ryan took a breath.
“Daniel, your father wasn’t just my friend.””
The words landed heavily.
“He was my brother.””
I closed my eyes.
I had heard this before.
But now it felt different.
Because this time, the person saying it was the man himself.
“Your father found out Diane had been looking for me.””
“Why?””
“Because she wanted the truth buried.””
“What truth?””
Ryan became quiet.
Then:
“The truth about who your real grandfather was.””
I stared at the floor.
Every answer created another question.
“What does that have to do with my father’s death?””
“Everything.””
The word hung in the air.
“Your father was going to tell you everything after your wedding.””
I froze.
“My wedding?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Five years ago.””
My wedding.
The day Emily and I got married.
The day my father was supposed to give a speech.
The day he never got to see.
I remembered that morning.
I remembered him looking tired.
I remembered him telling me:
“Some truths need the right moment.””
At the time, I thought he meant marriage.
I never imagined he meant secrets.
“What happened?””
Ryan’s voice softened.
“Your father found out Diane knew about the letters.””
I looked at my mother.
“She knew?””
“Yes.””
Ryan continued.
“She knew your father left something behind.””
My mother whispered:
“Stop.””
Nobody moved.
Ryan ignored her.
“She spent years trying to find it.””
My eyes moved toward the safe.
The key.
The envelope.
The reason she came to our house.
“She wasn’t searching for money.””
“No.””
Ryan’s voice became darker.
“She was searching for proof.””
“Proof of what?””
The line went silent.
Then he answered.
“Proof that your father knew the truth about you.””
My heart stopped.
“About me?””
I felt the room spinning.
“What truth about me?””
Ryan didn’t answer.
Not immediately.
When he finally spoke, his voice was almost a whisper.
“Daniel, your entire childhood was built on a lie.””
I looked at my mother.
She looked broken.
“Don’t.””
It was the first time I heard fear in her voice.
Not guilt.
Not anger.
Pure fear.
I turned away from her.
“Ryan.””
“Yes?””
“Tell me.””
Another pause.
Then:
“Your father loved you.””
My eyes burned.
“Don’t question that.””
I swallowed.
“Then what are you saying?””
“I’m saying he wasn’t your biological father.””
The world stopped.
I heard nothing.
Not the clock.
Not the refrigerator.
Not even my own breathing.
Only those words.
He wasn’t your biological father.
I looked at Emily.
Her eyes filled with tears.
She knew.
She knew this too.
My knees almost gave out.
“No.””
My voice was barely audible.
“No, that’s impossible.””
Ryan spoke gently.
“I know this is painful.””
“You don’t know anything about me.””
“I know your father raised you.””
I closed my eyes.
“I know he loved you.””
My hand covered my mouth.
Because that was the part that hurt the most.
Not the blood.
Not genetics.
My father was my father.
He was the man who taught me to ride a bike.
The man who waited outside my school when I was sick.
The man who held my hand when I lost my first pet.
The man who cried when I got married.
He was my father.
But now I had to accept that another man existed.
Another story.
Another truth.
Ryan continued.
“The DNA report in that safe wasn’t about proving your baby’s connection to your father.””
My eyes opened.
“Then what was it about?””
A long pause.
Then:
“It was about proving yours.””
I looked down at the report.
The one I thought was about my child.
The one I thought explained everything.
“What?””
Ryan said quietly:
“Your father ordered that test years ago.””
My blood ran cold.
“Why?””
“Because he discovered someone was lying about your birth.””
I looked at Diane.
She was crying now.
And she finally said the words she had been avoiding.
“Daniel…”
Her voice broke.
“I never wanted you to find out this way.””
I stared at her.
“Find out what?””
She covered her face.
And when she spoke, her voice was almost gone.
“The man who gave you your blood…”
She looked at me.
“He’s still alive.””
The phone nearly slipped from my hand.
Ryan spoke at the same moment.
“Daniel.””
I put the phone back to my ear.
“Yes?””
His next words changed everything.
“You’re not the only child your mother hid from your father.””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
Ryan’s answer was quiet.
Terrifying.
“It means there was another baby.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“Another baby?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Ryan didn’t hesitate.
“Your mother knows.””
I looked at Diane.
She was shaking.
May you like
Then Ryan said the one thing I never expected.
“The other child is the reason your mother tried to destroy Emily.””
