Chapter 3: The Envelope That Changed Everything
Nick stood in the middle of the ballroom, holding the document with both hands.
His mother was no longer smiling.
Eleanor Whitmore, who had been sitting near the front of the reception, slowly stood from her chair.
Her daughter Victoria remained beside her, looking increasingly uncomfortable.
I recognized them immediately.
They were the wealthy family Martha had spent years praising.
The family she believed Nick should have married into.
Martha pointed at Helen.
"She has manipulated all of you! She's been waiting for this moment!""
Helen calmly replied, "I didn't bring you here to destroy you, Martha. You did that yourself.""
Nick looked down at the document again.
"Mom, answer me.""
Martha approached him.
"Sweetheart, you don't understand what you're reading.""
"Then explain it.""
"It's complicated.""
"Then make it simple.""
He held the paper toward her.
"Why does this say you transferred Grandma's property into your name?""
A wave of whispers swept through the guests.
Helen closed her eyes briefly.
I looked at her.
"What property?""
She turned toward me.
"The house where Martha grew up. It belonged to my husband and me. After he died, I kept it because I wanted Nicholas to have somewhere to go when he became an adult.""
Nick stared at her.
"Grandma, you told me you lived in a small apartment.""
"I do now.""
"Why?""
Helen looked at Martha.
"Because I was told I had signed away the house.""
Martha crossed her arms.
"You did sign it.""
Helen nodded.
"I signed a document believing it was an authorization to handle the property taxes. I never agreed to give you ownership.""
Nick looked horrified.
"Did you forge her signature?""
"Don't be ridiculous!""
Eleanor finally spoke.
"Martha, perhaps you should stop lying.""
Martha spun toward her.
"You stay out of this, Eleanor!""
Eleanor took a step forward.
"I have stayed out of it for years. That's exactly what I'm ashamed of.""
Victoria looked at her mother.
"Mom, what are you talking about?""
Eleanor glanced at Nick.
"I originally thought Martha was simply an overprotective mother. She constantly told me that you and Victoria would make a wonderful couple. She said you were practically promised to each other.""
Nick gave a humorless laugh.
"I never promised Victoria anything.""
"I know that now," Eleanor replied.
Martha interrupted.
"You said you supported the idea!""
"I supported two young people getting to know each other. I never supported you humiliating another woman to make it happen.""
Victoria stepped away from her mother.
"Wait. Are you saying you actually planned to break up Nick's relationship?""
Martha turned toward her.
"Victoria, darling, don't listen to them.""
But Victoria wasn't looking at Martha anymore.
She was looking at the braid lying on the table beside the broken champagne glass.
"Did you really cut her hair?""
Martha lifted her chin.
"It was a tradition.""
Victoria's expression hardened.
"That's disgusting.""
The words seemed to hit Martha harder than anything else that had happened that evening.
Nick handed the document back to Helen.
"Why didn't you tell me about this before?""
Helen reached for his hand.
"I tried. Your mother intercepted my letters. I even contacted your father, but she told him I was trying to take the family apart.""
Richard, who had been standing silently near the dance floor, suddenly stepped forward.
"Martha, is that true?""
She didn't answer.
He looked at Helen.
"Did you really send letters?""
"Every birthday. Every Christmas. Every school graduation I knew about.""
Richard's face changed.
He turned toward his wife.
"Where are they?""
Martha's lips parted.
"Richard, please don't do this here.""
"Where are they, Martha?""
She looked around at the guests.
For the first time, she seemed aware that nearly everyone was watching her.
"Not now.""
Nick shook his head.
"No. You've had years to explain yourself.""
He walked over to the DJ booth and asked the coordinator to bring him a chair.
Then he returned to me.
"Emily, sit down. You shouldn't have to stand through this.""
I sat beside my mother.
My scalp still hurt where Martha had cut my hair.
My mother held my hand, rubbing her thumb over my knuckles.
I wanted to leave.
I wanted to go home, take off my wedding dress, and pretend none of this had happened.
But I also needed to understand.
Nick returned to the center of the ballroom.
"Grandma, you said Eleanor contacted you last month. Why?""
Eleanor reached into her purse.
"Because I found something in my late husband's office.""
She removed a small black folder.
"Your mother approached my husband several years ago asking him to invest in a property development. She claimed she owned a house that had been passed down through her family.""
Helen's face tightened.
"That was my house.""
Eleanor nodded.
"After my husband died, I reviewed some old financial records. The documents Martha had provided didn't match the original property records. I started investigating.""
Martha shook her head.
"You're making accusations you cannot prove.""
Eleanor opened the folder.
"I brought copies.""
She placed several pages on the nearest table.
Nick looked at them.
His expression became increasingly serious.
Then he noticed something.
"Why is my name here?""
Eleanor pointed to a signature near the bottom.
"Because your mother used your personal information to support one of the financial applications.""
Nick looked at Martha.
"What did you do?""
She rushed toward the documents.
Nick moved them out of reach.
"Don't touch them.""
"Those are private family matters!""
"Using my information without permission isn't a family matter.""
Richard took the pages.
He read them slowly, his face growing pale.
"Martha...""
She grabbed his arm.
"Don't you dare judge me!""
He pulled away.
"Did you put our son's name on a loan application?""
Martha's silence answered him.
The ballroom had become so quiet that I could hear the faint hum of the air-conditioning.
Nick looked at his father.
"Did you know?""
Richard shook his head.
"No. I swear I didn't.""
Helen finally sat down.
She looked exhausted.
"I didn't come here to ruin your wedding, Nicholas. I came because I learned what your mother was doing, and I couldn't let her continue.""
Nick knelt beside her.
"I'm sorry, Grandma.""
She touched his cheek.
"You were a child. You were told what to believe.""
Then she looked at me.
"And you, sweetheart, deserve an apology.""
I struggled to speak.
"Why did she do this to me?""
Helen glanced at Martha.
"Because she believes love gives her ownership over the people around her. She thought cutting your hair would remind you that you had to obey her.""
I looked toward the braid on the table.
All those flowers.
All those hours my mother had spent helping me prepare.
Gone in seconds.
Nick stood up.
He took the microphone again.
"I want everyone to hear this clearly. Emily is my wife. Nobody gets to humiliate her, control her, or decide whether she's good enough to stand beside me.""
He looked directly at Martha.
"And from tonight onward, you will never have that power again.""
Martha's face twisted.
"You can't do this to me! I'm your mother!""
Nick's voice remained steady.
"Then you should have treated the woman I married like family.""
For a moment, I thought it was over.
Then Helen reached into her handbag one final time.
She removed a smaller envelope, yellowed around the edges.
"There's something else," she said.
Nick turned toward her.
"What is it?""
Helen looked directly at Martha.
"This is the letter your father left before he died. The one Martha told everyone had been destroyed.""
Martha suddenly stopped breathing.
Richard stared at the envelope.
"What letter?""
Helen held it out to Nick.
"Your grandfather left instructions about the house, the family inheritance, and the person he believed should eventually receive it.""
Nick opened the envelope.
He unfolded the handwritten page.
His eyes moved across the first paragraph.
Then he looked at his mother.
"Mom... why did you tell everyone Grandpa left everything to you?""
Martha's knees seemed to weaken.
Helen quietly answered.
"Because he didn't.""
Nick turned the page over.
At the bottom was a name.
My name.
May you like
Emily Carter.
And Martha screamed, "YOU WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO FIND THAT LETTER!""
