Chapter 13: The Mother Who Was Never Dead
For several seconds, nobody in the room moved.
Laura was alive.
The woman Martha had spent years describing as unstable, dishonest, and dangerous was alive.
And she was calling us because she believed Martha was coming to silence her.
Nick put the phone on speaker.
"Laura, where are you?""
"I'm staying at a small house outside the city. James arranged it years ago.""
"Are you safe?""
There was a pause.
"I don't know anymore.""
Alexandra stepped forward.
"Mom?""
The word came out barely above a whisper.
Silence.
Then the woman on the other end began sobbing.
"Alexandra?""
Alexandra covered her mouth.
"Mom, it's me.""
"Oh, sweetheart.""
The sound of Laura crying filled the room.
Alexandra sank into a chair.
"I thought you were dead.""
"I know. I'm so sorry.""
"Why didn't you come back?""
Laura struggled to speak.
"Because I was threatened. I was told that if I returned, Martha would make sure I lost you forever.""
Alexandra looked toward Eleanor.
"She told me my mother abandoned me.""
Laura's voice broke.
"I never abandoned you. Not for one single day.""
Alexandra began crying uncontrollably.
Nick crouched beside her.
"Laura, we're going to get you somewhere safe.""
"Please don't come here yet. Martha has people watching the road.""
The investigator took the phone.
"Ms. Whitmore, this is an investigator working with the local authorities. We need your exact location.""
Laura hesitated.
"I don't know if I can trust anyone.""
"I understand. But your daughter is here, and we have officers with us. We can arrange a safe meeting.""
Another pause.
Then Laura gave the address.
The investigator immediately contacted his colleagues.
While they organized the operation, Alexandra sat beside Eleanor.
She held her aunt's hand.
"Did you know?""
Eleanor shook her head.
"No, sweetheart. I swear I didn't know your mother was alive.""
"But you knew something was wrong.""
Eleanor's eyes filled.
"My husband told me he was helping someone from the family. He never explained who. I should have asked more questions.""
Alexandra looked down at her hands.
"All those years, I thought I wasn't wanted.""
Eleanor pulled her into an embrace.
"You were always wanted.""
Helen approached them.
"Your grandfather wanted you protected. He never stopped trying to make that happen.""
Alexandra looked at her.
"Then why did Martha have so much power?""
Helen sighed.
"Because she knew how to make people afraid of losing the people they loved.""
Nick stood.
"That ends tonight.""
The investigator returned with an update.
Two officers would escort Laura to a secure meeting location. We were instructed to remain at the Whitmore estate until they confirmed the route was clear.
But Martha wasn't waiting.
At 8:17 p.m., Eleanor's security system detected movement near the east entrance.
A black SUV had stopped outside the gate.
The security guard contacted us.
"Mrs. Whitmore, there are two people at the entrance.""
Eleanor looked at the monitor.
Her face went white.
Martha was standing beside the vehicle.
And Daniel Reeves was with her.
Nick stepped closer to the screen.
"She's actually here.""
The investigator immediately instructed the guards not to open the gate.
Martha pressed the intercom.
"Eleanor! Open this gate!""
Eleanor remained silent.
Martha pressed it again.
"I know you're inside!""
Daniel leaned toward the camera.
"We have legal business to discuss.""
The investigator activated the intercom.
"Mr. Reeves, this property is currently part of an active investigation. You need to leave.""
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
"I have documents proving my right to enter.""
"Then provide them through the proper legal channels.""
Martha pushed him aside.
"Stop hiding behind those people!""
She looked directly at the camera.
"Alexandra! I know you're in there!""
Alexandra stood up.
Her face had gone pale.
"Don't answer her," Eleanor whispered.
But Martha continued.
"Sweetheart, I need to talk to you. Your mother has been lying to you. Everything she's told you is false.""
Alexandra approached the monitor.
"Then why did you tell me she was dead?""
Martha froze.
For the first time, she appeared unable to produce an immediate answer.
Daniel leaned toward her.
"Let's go.""
But Martha grabbed his arm.
"No. I'm not leaving without the documents.""
The investigator looked at the security guard.
"Keep the gate locked.""
Then something unexpected happened.
A second vehicle approached from the opposite direction.
It was a police car.
Two officers stepped out.
Martha immediately began shouting.
"Thank goodness! These people are keeping me away from my family!""
One officer approached her.
"Ma'am, we need you to step away from the gate.""
"Do you know who I am?""
"Yes, ma'am. Please step away.""
Daniel quietly moved toward the SUV.
The second officer stopped him.
"Mr. Reeves, we'd like to speak with you.""
His expression changed.
"What about?""
"Your involvement in several financial transactions and the unauthorized removal of property documents.""
Daniel looked toward Martha.
She stared back at him.
For a moment, I thought he would blame her.
Instead, he said something that made her turn completely white.
"I told you this would happen.""
Martha slapped his arm.
"Shut up!""
The officer immediately separated them.
Then another vehicle arrived.
A dark blue sedan pulled through the gate after being cleared by security.
A woman stepped out.
She was in her early fifties, with shoulder-length brown hair and tired eyes.
She looked directly toward the house.
Alexandra stopped breathing.
"Mom?""
Laura began walking toward the entrance.
Alexandra ran.
They met halfway across the driveway.
Laura wrapped both arms around her daughter.
"I'm here, sweetheart.""
Alexandra buried her face in her mother's shoulder.
"I thought you didn't want me.""
Laura kissed the top of her head.
"I wanted you every day.""
I watched them embrace, feeling tears run down my cheeks.
Behind the gate, Martha stared at the reunion.
Her face had become twisted with rage.
"You ungrateful woman!"" she screamed.
Laura slowly turned.
Martha pointed at her.
"After everything I did for you, this is how you repay me?""
Laura held Alexandra's hand.
"You didn't do anything for me, Martha. You took my daughter away.""
Martha laughed bitterly.
"I protected this family!""
Laura shook her head.
"No. You protected your secrets.""
Then she looked toward the officers.
"I have evidence of what happened to James.""
Daniel suddenly stepped forward.
"That's enough!""
The officers restrained him.
Martha looked at Laura.
"What evidence?""
Laura reached into her handbag.
She removed a small envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter and a photograph.
"I kept these for more than twenty years.""
She handed them to the investigator.
The photograph showed Daniel and Martha standing outside a hospital.
The date was the same night James had collapsed.
But there was something else.
On the back was a handwritten sentence.
The original recording was never destroyed.
Nick looked at Laura.
"Where is it?""
Laura pointed toward Daniel.
"He knows.""
Daniel's face turned pale.
Martha stepped backward.
May you like
Then Laura delivered the final blow.
"Because I was there when he hid it.""
