Chapter 11: The Woman in the Photograph

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Eleanor took the photograph from Richard.

She studied the young woman's face.

Then she stepped backward.

"That's impossible.""

Nick turned toward her.

"Do you recognize her?""

Eleanor nodded slowly.

"Her name was Laura Whitmore. She was my husband's younger sister.""

Helen looked up sharply.

"Your husband's sister?""

"Yes. She disappeared from our family when she was twenty-three.""

Eleanor stared at the baby in Laura's arms.

"We were told she had moved overseas.""

Richard examined the photograph again.

"Who is the baby?""

Eleanor's fingers began trembling.

"I don't know.""

Helen sat down.

"James must have known her.""

Eleanor nodded.

"My husband never talked about Laura. Whenever I asked, he became uncomfortable.""

Nick opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter written in James's familiar handwriting.

He began reading.

Dear Nicholas,

If you are reading this, then the people I trusted have failed to protect the truth.

There is a young woman named Laura Whitmore. She was abandoned by her family after refusing to participate in a financial arrangement that would have harmed another person.

Eleanor covered her mouth.

"That sounds like my father-in-law.""

Nick continued.

I met Laura when she was struggling to raise her child. She had very little money, but she refused to accept help from people who wanted to control her.

I admired her courage.

I also learned that Martha had been involved in the circumstances that forced Laura to leave.

Helen looked toward Richard.

"What does that mean?""

Richard shook his head.

"I don't know.""

Nick continued reading.

Laura's child was born with a claim to a portion of the Whitmore family estate. Martha discovered this and helped conceal the relevant documents.

Eleanor sat down heavily.

"My husband had a child?""

The room became silent.

She looked at the photograph.

"His sister had a child?""

Helen nodded.

"It appears so.""

Nick reached the final paragraph.

I changed the inheritance agreement because I discovered that the original arrangements had been manipulated. Emily's name was included because she would be able to protect the interests of people who had no voice in this family.

I felt my heart pounding.

"Me?""

Nick looked at me.

The letter continued.

I did not choose Emily because she needed money. I chose her because she had demonstrated the ability to stand beside someone without demanding ownership of their life.

If Martha has tried to remove her from the agreement, then she has likely been hiding Laura's child as well.

Nick lowered the letter.

Richard looked toward Helen.

"Did you know about Laura?""

"No," Helen whispered.

"James kept this from me.""

Eleanor stood.

"My husband never mentioned a child. Not once.""

She picked up the cassette recorder.

"Maybe this explains everything.""

The investigator examined the device.

"It looks old, but it may still work.""

He found a compatible power adapter in the office and connected it.

The cassette was already inside.

Nick pressed play.

A low crackling sound filled the room.

Then James's voice emerged.

"If this recording is being played, I need someone to understand what happened to Laura.""

He paused.

"Martha told everyone that Laura had stolen money from the family. That was a lie.""

Eleanor began crying.

"My husband knew.""

James continued.

"Laura discovered that certain funds were being transferred out of the Whitmore estate. She confronted Martha and threatened to tell the family.""

A second voice appeared briefly.

It was younger Martha.

"Nobody will believe you!""

James continued.

"Laura left after Martha threatened to make sure she lost custody of her child.""

Eleanor covered her face.

The recording went on.

"Laura asked me for help. I agreed to protect her and her child. I also promised that the money taken from the estate would eventually be restored.""

Helen looked horrified.

"How much money?""

James gave an amount.

Eleanor slowly sat down.

It was enormous.

Her late husband's family had lost a substantial part of its wealth.

And Martha had apparently been involved in concealing the transfers.

Nick stopped the recording.

"Grandma, why did Grandpa put Emily's name in the agreement?""

Helen looked at me.

"Because James wanted someone outside the family to make sure the truth could never be buried again.""

The investigator made notes.

"This recording could be important evidence. We'll need to preserve the original and arrange a proper forensic examination.""

Eleanor looked at the photograph.

"Where is Laura now?""

Helen shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Nick turned the photograph over.

There was a small address written beneath the date.

A street in a neighboring town.

Eleanor recognized it.

"That's an old residential neighborhood. I haven't been there in years.""

Richard looked at the investigator.

"Can we contact her?""

"We can try. But we should verify the information first.""

Before anyone could respond, Eleanor's phone rang.

It was Victoria.

Eleanor answered.

"Victoria?""

Her daughter's voice was frantic.

"Mom, where are you?""

"At the estate. What's wrong?""

"Grandma Martha is here.""

Eleanor's expression changed.

"Where?""

"At my apartment.""

Nick moved closer.

"Put her on speaker.""

Victoria did.

Martha's voice filled the room.

"Victoria, give me the documents.""

Victoria replied, "I don't have them.""

"Don't lie to me!""

"I told you I don't have them!""

Martha's voice became louder.

"You promised to help me!""

Victoria started crying.

"I gave you the key. I did what you asked. But I'm not helping you anymore.""

There was a loud crash.

Eleanor stood.

"Victoria, are you safe?""

"I don't know.""

Nick grabbed his jacket.

"Stay inside. We're coming.""

But Martha suddenly spoke again.

"Tell Nicholas I have the original beneficiary agreement.""

Nick froze.

Martha continued.

"And if he wants to know who Laura's child really is, he should come and see me.""

The call disconnected.

Nick looked at Helen.

"She knows where Laura is.""

Helen shook her head.

"Or she knows where the child is.""

Eleanor grabbed her purse.

"We're going to Victoria.""

The investigator told us not to approach Martha directly and arranged for officers to accompany us.

When we arrived at Victoria's apartment, the front door was open.

A chair had been knocked over.

Papers were scattered across the floor.

Victoria was sitting against the kitchen cabinets, holding her wrist.

Eleanor rushed toward her.

"Darling!""

Victoria began crying.

"She took it.""

Nick crouched beside her.

"What did she take?""

Victoria looked at him.

"The envelope Martha was keeping.""

"What envelope?""

May you like

Victoria swallowed.

"The one with Laura's birth records.""
