Chapter 7: The Video That Was Supposed to Destroy Me

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

I stared at Jordan, hoping I had misunderstood him.

"What video, sweetheart?""

Jordan glanced toward Rachel.

"My mom recorded Maya crying after she pushed her into the chair.""

Rachel's expression changed.

"Did you actually see the recording?""

He nodded.

"She showed it to Daniel.""

"When?""

"Last week. They were in the garage. I went downstairs because I couldn't sleep.""

I felt my stomach twist.

"What did they say?""

Jordan rubbed his palms against his jeans.

"Mom said the video would be useful if you ever tried to take Maya away from Daddy.""

Rachel slowly closed her folder.

"Useful how?""

Jordan looked at me.

"She said it would look like Maya was afraid of you.""

I felt something inside me go completely cold.

The woman who had frightened my daughter was planning to use that fear as evidence against me.

Rachel took out her phone.

"Laura, we need to document this. Jordan, I want you to tell me exactly what you remember. Nobody is going to put words in your mouth.""

He nodded.

Then he described what he had seen.

Tasha had been standing in the garage holding her phone. Daniel was sitting on an old workbench, scrolling through something.

On the recording, Maya was crying.

Tasha's voice could be heard asking questions.

"Did Mommy tell you to lie?""

"Are you scared when Mommy gets angry?""

"Does Mommy make you cry?""

Maya had been confused.

She had kept asking for her mother.

But Tasha continued recording.

"Say what happened, Maya. Tell the truth.""

Jordan said Daniel eventually took the phone.

He replayed the clip and smiled.

Then he said, "This is exactly what we need.""

I covered my mouth.

Rachel wrote everything down.

"Did you hear them discuss where they would use the video?""

Jordan nodded.

"At the hearing.""

Rachel looked at me.

"They're trying to establish a custody narrative before you can respond to the financial allegations.""

I sat down on the nearest bench.

It was becoming impossible to separate the lies.

The affair.

The forged signatures.

The stolen money.

The false custody documents.

Now a video of my frightened daughter.

"Can they really do this?"" I whispered.

Rachel sat beside me.

"They can submit evidence. That doesn't mean it's genuine or that a court will accept their interpretation. We need the original recording, its full context, and a proper record of what happened.""

I looked at Jordan.

"Do you know where the video is?""

"On Mom's phone.""

"Where is the phone?""

"She keeps it in her bedroom.""

Rachel shook her head.

"We won't search her property. But if she uses the recording in proceedings, our attorney can challenge it and request the original file.""

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I didn't want to answer.

Rachel nodded toward it.

"Let's hear what he wants.""

I accepted the call.

"Hello?""

"Laura, we need to talk.""

His voice was different now.

No warmth.

No affectionate greeting.

Just irritation.

"About what?""

"About the ridiculous accusations you're making.""

"I'm not making accusations, Daniel. I'm reading documents with my name forged on them.""

He exhaled sharply.

"You're being manipulated.""

"By whom?""

"That boy. My sister-in-law. Rachel. Whoever is feeding you this nonsense.""

I looked at Jordan.

He was staring at the ground.

"Jordan has told me what happened.""

Daniel went quiet.

Then he laughed.

"He's twelve, Laura. He doesn't understand adult situations.""

"He understands when his mother pushes an eight-year-old girl.""

"Don't exaggerate.""

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"She hurt Maya.""

"She was disciplining her.""

"She's not Maya's mother.""

"Neither are you perfect.""

The words landed with a familiar cruelty.

For years, Daniel had used my imperfections to silence me.

If I questioned a bill, I was controlling.

If I questioned his late nights, I was insecure.

If I disagreed with him, I was emotional.

But this time, something had changed.

"Daniel, did you file a custody petition claiming I'm unstable?""

"I'm protecting my daughter.""

"From me?""

"From what you're becoming.""

I stared at the parking lot.

"Then why did you forge my signature?""

He stopped speaking.

I waited.

Finally, he said, "You need to be careful about what you accuse people of.""

"Is that a threat?""

"It's advice.""

Then he hung up.

Rachel took the phone from my hand.

"He's trying to provoke you. Don't give him anything he can twist.""

We returned to my house.

Maya was sitting at the kitchen table, coloring a picture of a purple butterfly.

When she saw me, she smiled.

"Mommy!""

I hugged her.

"How was your morning?""

"Good. I made something.""

She showed me the drawing.

There were three people in it.

A little girl.

A woman.

And a boy.

"Who's this?"" I asked.

"Me, you, and Jordan.""

She pointed to the boy.

"He's my superhero.""

Jordan, standing behind us, blushed.

I kissed Maya's forehead.

"He's a pretty good superhero.""

Then she looked at me seriously.

"Mommy, are the police coming to take me away?""

I froze.

"Who told you that?""

"Daddy called.""

I looked toward Rachel.

Maya continued.

"He said I might have to live somewhere else because people think you don't take care of me.""

I pulled her onto my lap.

"Sweetheart, listen carefully. You are safe. You're loved. And nobody gets to make you responsible for grown-up problems.""

She nodded.

Then she whispered, "I didn't want to say bad things about you in the video.""

My heart shattered.

I held her tighter.

"You don't have to say anything bad about me. You just have to be a little girl.""

That evening, Rachel left after making several calls.

I was putting Maya to bed when someone knocked on the front door.

Three firm knocks.

I checked the security camera.

Daniel was standing outside.

He wasn't alone.

Tasha stood beside him, holding a thick blue folder.

And behind them was a man carrying a camera.

Daniel looked directly into the security camera.

"Laura," he called, "open the door. We need to settle this before things get worse.""

I didn't move.

Then Tasha lifted the blue folder.

May you like

And I recognized the document she was holding.

It was the original property transfer agreement.
