Chapter 17: The Signature on the Birth Certificate
The hearing lasted nearly three hours.
Daniel's attorney presented the documents first.
There was the alleged letter from my father.
A company resolution supposedly transferring control to Daniel.
And a statement from Evelyn claiming my father had personally approved the arrangement.
Everything looked official.
Everything looked convincing.
Until Michael placed the original trust documents on the table.
Then he presented the original company ownership records.
He showed the court that my father had never transferred his controlling interest to Daniel.
He explained that I had inherited the controlling ownership through the trust.
The judge examined the documents carefully.
Daniel sat beside his attorney, staring straight ahead.
When Michael introduced the suspected forged transfer agreement, Daniel finally moved.
"That's not a forgery," he said.
The judge looked at him.
"Mr. Bennett, you will have an opportunity to respond through your counsel.""
Daniel leaned back.
Michael continued.
He presented the suspicious transfers to Northbridge Property Holdings.
He explained that the company was registered to Tasha and had received approximately $186,000 from business accounts.
He also presented the attempted trust withdrawal and the disputed beneficiary amendment.
Daniel's attorney objected.
"These allegations are unsubstantiated.""
Michael remained calm.
"We are not asking the court to determine criminal liability today. We are asking that disputed transfers be frozen until ownership and authorization can be independently established.""
The judge reviewed the documents.
Then he looked at Daniel.
"Mr. Bennett, did you authorize the transfers to Northbridge?""
Daniel's attorney stood.
"My client disputes the characterization of those transactions.""
"That wasn't my question.""
Daniel looked at his lawyer.
Then he answered.
"I approved certain payments.""
"Did Ms. Bennett authorize them?""
"She was involved in the business.""
Michael placed a document in front of the judge.
"This authorization contains a signature that Ms. Bennett denies making. We have requested independent examination.""
The judge studied it.
"Is the notary still authorized to practice?""
Michael replied.
"Mr. Robert Ellis is currently suspended pending investigation.""
The judge set the document aside.
He issued a temporary order preserving the company's assets and preventing either party from transferring disputed property or trust funds until further review.
He also declined to grant Daniel exclusive control over the business.
It wasn't a final victory.
But it was the first time in months that someone had looked at the documents and questioned Daniel's version of reality.
Outside the courtroom, Daniel approached me.
"You think you've won?""
I didn't answer.
He lowered his voice.
"You have no idea what your father left behind.""
"Then tell me.""
He looked around.
"Not here.""
Michael stepped between us.
"Any further communication should go through counsel.""
Daniel laughed.
"Of course. That's how Laura does everything now. She hides behind lawyers.""
I looked at him.
"No, Daniel. I used to hide behind your promises.""
His smile disappeared.
I walked away.
In the courthouse parking lot, Rachel checked her phone.
"There's an email from Vanessa.""
I stopped.
"What does it say?""
Rachel read it.
I am safe. I had to leave because someone entered my apartment while I was away. I have the envelope your father left with me. I can meet you tomorrow.
Then another message appeared.
Please don't tell Samuel.
Rachel looked at me.
"That's concerning.""
I nodded.
"She doesn't trust him.""
"Or someone has convinced her not to.""
I called Vanessa.
She answered almost immediately.
"Laura?""
"Are you safe?""
"For now.""
"Why don't you want me to tell Samuel?""
A long pause.
"Because he lied to you.""
My stomach tightened.
"About Rebecca?""
"About several things.""
"Tell me.""
Vanessa lowered her voice.
"Your father didn't arrange Rebecca's new identity. Samuel did.""
I glanced at Rachel.
"Why?""
"Because Samuel wanted to keep her away from Patrick.""
"Was he protecting her?""
"I don't know anymore.""
"Vanessa, what is in the envelope?""
"Documents. A recording. And a copy of the original birth certificate.""
I swallowed.
"Can you send them to Michael?""
"No. I need to speak to you first.""
"Where?""
"There's a diner near the old courthouse. Tomorrow at ten.""
"All right.""
She hesitated.
"Laura?""
"Yes?""
"If you see Daniel, don't tell him where you're going.""
The call ended.
Rachel looked troubled.
"We should involve Michael before meeting her.""
"I agree.""
She opened her calendar.
Then my phone rang again.
Jordan.
I answered immediately.
"Hey. Is everything okay?""
His voice was trembling.
"Laura, Mom called.""
I stopped walking.
"What did she say?""
"She said she wants to see me.""
I glanced at Rachel.
"Did she threaten you?""
"No. She said she misses me. She said she wants to explain everything.""
"How do you feel about that?""
"I don't know.""
I softened my voice.
"You don't have to decide anything right now.""
Jordan was quiet.
Then he said, "She asked if I still had the black flash drive.""
My stomach tightened.
"Did you tell her?""
"No.""
"Good. Where is it?""
"With Rachel.""
Rachel nodded.
I told him that was fine.
Then he said something else.
"Laura, she told me something about my dad.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"What?""
"She said Daniel isn't really my uncle.""
I looked at Rachel.
"What do you mean?""
Jordan whispered:
"She said my father was someone else.""
I couldn't speak.
"Did she say who?""
"No. She said she would tell me when I was older.""
I took a slow breath.
"Jordan, listen to me. Whatever the truth is, none of it changes how much you matter.""
He sniffed.
"Okay.""
"You're not responsible for the adults' secrets.""
"I know.""
He paused.
"Do you think my mom is lying?""
I looked at Rachel.
Then I answered honestly.
"I think we need to find out.""
After the call, Rachel and I drove back to my house.
I couldn't stop thinking about what Jordan had said.
Daniel wasn't really his uncle.
Tasha's relationship with Daniel was already complicated enough.
Now there was another secret.
When we arrived, Maya ran to the door.
She wrapped her arms around my waist.
"Did the judge help?""
I knelt.
"Yes. We have some protection now.""
"Does that mean Daddy can't take our house?""
"Not today.""
She nodded.
Then she looked past me.
"Is Jordan coming back?""
"He'll be here soon.""
Maya smiled.
"Good. I saved him a cupcake.""
For a moment, the world felt almost normal.
Then Rachel's phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression changed.
"Where?""
She listened.
Then she looked at me.
It was Michael.
Vanessa had just contacted his office.
She wasn't going to meet us tomorrow.
She was already on her way to his office.
May you like
And she had brought someone with her.
Someone who claimed to be Rebecca Reed.
