Chapter 19: The Woman in My Father's Hospital Room

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

"My mother is dead," I finally said.

Tasha's breathing trembled through the phone.

"I know what you were told.""

"She died fifteen years ago.""

"I know.""

"Then stop saying things that aren't true.""

"I saw the woman enter your father's room, Laura. I recognized her voice. I thought it was your mother.""

I gripped the phone.

"Who was she?""

"I don't know.""

"Then how can you be certain?""

"Because I heard her say something your mother used to say to you.""

I closed my eyes.

"What?""

Tasha hesitated.

"She called your father Robbie.""

Nobody had called my father that except my mother.

Not Samuel.

Not Daniel.

Not even his closest friends.

Only her.

"Where is the recording?"" I asked.

"At my house.""

"Bring it to the police.""

"I can't.""

"Why?""

"Because Evelyn has the original.""

My stomach tightened.

"Your mother-in-law?""

"Yes.""

Rachel was already reaching for her coat.

I put Tasha on speaker.

"Listen carefully. We're coming to you. Don't touch the recording. Don't let anyone take it.""

Tasha was silent.

Then she whispered, "You need to come alone.""

"No.""

"Laura, please. Evelyn is watching everything.""

"Then we'll make sure she knows we're coming.""

I ended the call.

Rachel immediately contacted Michael and explained what Tasha had said. He advised us not to confront anyone or enter Tasha's home without authorization. He also contacted the appropriate investigators about the possibility of evidence connected to my father's death.

We arranged to meet Tasha at a police station.

Before leaving, I called Jordan.

"Are you still with your mother?""

"Yes.""

"Is she behaving calmly?""

"She's crying.""

"Stay somewhere you feel safe. Don't take anything from her, and don't let her take you anywhere without the proper arrangements.""

Jordan hesitated.

"Laura?""

"I'm here.""

"She said she didn't know who my father was until I was born.""

I closed my eyes.

"We'll talk about that when I see you.""

"Okay.""

When Rachel and I arrived, Tasha was sitting in a small interview room.

She looked exhausted.

Her hair was tangled, and her eyes were swollen.

On the table in front of her sat a small silver recorder.

I stopped in the doorway.

"Is that it?""

Tasha nodded.

"This is a copy. Evelyn has the original.""

I sat opposite her.

"Tell me what happened.""

Tasha looked at Rachel, then back at me.

"After your father was transferred to the second hospital, Patrick came to see him. He stayed for about twenty minutes. When he left, I was in the corridor.""

"And then?""

"A woman entered the room.""

"Did you see her face?""

Tasha shook her head.

"No. She wore a scarf over her hair. I saw her from behind.""

"Then how did you recognize my mother?""

"Her voice.""

Tasha touched the recorder.

"She said, 'Robbie, you promised me you'd keep the girls safe.''"

My throat tightened.

"That's something my mother said.""

"I know.""

"Did you hear anything else?""

"Your father said, 'You shouldn't be here.'' Then she replied, 'Neither should you.''"

Tasha pressed a button.

The recording began.

At first, there was only static.

Then a door opened.

A woman's voice spoke.

"Robbie, you promised me you'd keep the girls safe.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

It sounded like my mother.

Not similar.

Not vaguely familiar.

It was her voice.

My father answered.

"You shouldn't be here.""

"Neither should you.""

There was a long pause.

Then my father spoke again.

"Where is Evelyn?""

The woman answered.

"She'll be here soon.""

I looked at Rachel.

The recording continued.

My father said, "You were supposed to be dead.""

The woman laughed softly.

"That's what everyone believes.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

Then my father's voice became angry.

"You cannot come back into their lives.""

The woman replied:

"I didn't come back for them. I came back because you have something that belongs to me.""

A door opened.

Footsteps approached.

A man's voice interrupted.

"Is she here?""

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

I stared at the recorder.

"Who was that woman?""

Tasha shook her head.

"I don't know.""

"You said you recognized her.""

"I recognized the voice. I didn't see her face.""

Rachel leaned forward.

"Where did Evelyn get the original recording?""

"She took it from me after your father died. She said it would destroy the family if anyone heard it.""

"Why did you keep this copy?""

Tasha looked down.

"Because I knew one day you would need it.""

I wanted to believe her.

But I remembered Maya's frightened face.

I remembered the threats.

I remembered the money.

"You don't get to call yourself my protector," I said.

"You helped create this.""

Tasha nodded.

"I know.""

Then she looked at me.

"But I can still tell you what happened afterward.""

I waited.

"Your father died the next morning. Evelyn told everyone he had suffered another cardiac event. Patrick arranged the paperwork. Daniel handled the company.""

"And you?""

"I took the phone. I kept the recording. I was afraid.""

"Why did you never tell me?""

"Because Evelyn said she would tell everyone about my involvement in the original fraud. She had documents showing I helped Patrick copy the property records.""

I stared at her.

"So you protected yourself.""

"Yes.""

The honesty was almost worse than another lie.

Rachel closed the recorder.

"We'll provide this to the investigators. No one should make assumptions about the woman's identity until the voice and recording are authenticated.""

Tasha nodded.

Then she looked at me.

"Laura, there's something else.""

I felt my patience slipping.

"What now?""

"Jordan's father.""

I went still.

"Daniel isn't his father?""

Tasha shook her head.

"No.""

"Then who is?""

She looked at Rachel.

"Patrick.""

The room seemed to tilt.

"Patrick Wells?""

Tasha nodded.

"Jordan is Patrick's biological son.""

I couldn't breathe.

"Does Jordan know?""

"No. Daniel has known for years. Evelyn knew too. They told everyone Daniel was his uncle because it made the family arrangement easier.""

"Why would Daniel pretend?""

"Because Patrick didn't want his name connected to me. Daniel agreed to raise Jordan as his nephew.""

I stared at her.

"And the affair?""

Tasha's face crumpled.

"Daniel and I started sleeping together again because Patrick was threatening to expose the truth about Jordan. Daniel said he could protect us.""

I stood.

"Don't use Jordan to explain your affair.""

"I'm not.""

"He's a child. He isn't a secret you get to trade.""

Tasha lowered her head.

I turned toward the door.

Then she spoke again.

"Laura, Evelyn knows you're here.""

I stopped.

"How?""

Tasha looked at the recorder.

"Because she called me five minutes ago.""

Rachel immediately checked her phone.

A message had arrived from Michael.

*Do not leave the station without speaking to the officers. Evelyn Bennett has just contacted the investigators. She claims she has evidence that Robert Bennett's death was caused by someone in your family.*

I read it twice.

Then another message appeared.

*She has named you.*

I looked at Rachel.

Tasha began crying.

"She's going to blame you.""

For four years, I had believed my father's death was a tragedy.

May you like

Now it seemed every person who knew the truth had a different version.

And someone was determined to make sure I carried the blame.
