Chapter 19: The Price of Lily

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

My mother had said one word.

Lily.

Then the call had ended.

I stared at my phone, waiting for it to ring again. My daughter slept peacefully in the security officer's arms, unaware that someone had apparently made her the center of a sixteen-year conspiracy.

"Give me my baby.""

The officer carefully handed Lily back.

I held her against my chest.

"What did she mean?"" I whispered.

Nobody answered.

I called Dad.

Straight to voicemail.

I called Detective Harris.

No answer.

Then Renee appeared in the doorway, her face pale.

"I heard.""

I looked at her.

"Martin wants Lily.""

"That's what your mother said.""

"Why?""

Renee sat beside me.

"We don't know yet. But we won't let anyone near her.""

I kissed Lily's forehead.

"She hasn't done anything. She's just a baby.""

"I know.""

Renee took my hand.

"Listen to me. The police have Derek and Vanessa in custody. Martin is still missing, but they have his vehicle description, his associates, and the evidence from the warehouse. We're not going to let him disappear.""

I wanted to believe her.

Then the security officer's radio crackled.

A voice came through.

"Unit three, report. We have an unauthorized vehicle approaching the east entrance.""

The officer stood.

"Stay inside.""

He moved toward the door.

I pulled Lily closer.

Through the window, I saw headlights moving slowly along the driveway.

A dark sedan.

It stopped near the gate.

A woman stepped out.

For one terrible second, I thought it was Vanessa.

Then she turned toward the house.

It was my mother.

I ran to the door.

Renee caught my arm.

"Wait.""

"That's her!""

"Let security confirm.""

The officers approached the woman cautiously. She raised both hands.

Then she said something.

One of them turned toward the house.

"She's asking for her daughter.""

My knees almost gave way.

I stepped outside.

She was older than the woman in my memories. Her hair was silver, her face thinner, and there were lines around her eyes that hadn't been there before.

But she was unmistakably my mother.

She looked at me.

Then at Lily.

And began to cry.

I crossed the driveway.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she reached toward my face.

"My little girl.""

I wanted to hug her.

I wanted to slap her.

I wanted to ask why she'd let me grow up believing she was dead.

Instead, I whispered, "You missed everything.""

Her hand trembled.

"I know.""

"You missed my graduation. My wedding. My pregnancy.""

"I know.""

"You missed the day I became a mother.""

She looked down at Lily.

"I saw you that day.""

I stepped back.

"Don't.""

Her face crumpled.

"I stood beside your hospital bed. I wanted to wake you. I wanted to hold you both. But Derek was watching the corridor.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I thought I could get away before he noticed.""

"Then why did you leave?""

"Because I heard him speaking to Martin.""

She looked toward the house.

"He told Martin the baby had been born. He said the plan could finally move forward.""

"What plan?""

My mother swallowed.

"Robert had created a secret trust years ago. It was designed to pass to the first female descendant in his bloodline who reached adulthood. He believed that child would eventually inherit control of the company.""

I stared at her.

"Me?""

"Yes. Robert's adopted daughter was your grandmother in the legal records. But the trust was structured through her descendants. You were the beneficiary.""

"Then what does Lily have to do with it?""

My mother looked at my daughter.

"Martin believed the trust could be challenged once you had a child. He wanted to establish that you were unfit to control it. He thought Derek could make you appear unstable, force a custody dispute, and use that to gain control over the trust.""

My stomach turned.

"So the assault—"

"Was part of his plan. Derek wanted you frightened, dependent, and willing to sign anything. When you resisted, he became violent.""

I looked at Lily.

"And Martin wanted her?""

"He wanted leverage. If you disappeared or were declared incapable, Lily would become the next legal link. Martin believed he could use the confusion to control the assets.""

Renee had come outside.

"That's not how the trust works," she said.

"And we have the documents to prove it.""

My mother looked at her.

"Then you need to see the original.""

She reached into her coat and removed a small envelope.

Inside was a folded document and a key.

"The original trust agreement is in the archive beneath the Bennett estate. So is Robert's recording.""

Renee examined the document.

"Where did you get this?""

"From the person who helped me escape.""

I looked at her.

"Who?""

Before she could answer, a car engine roared beyond the gate.

A security officer shouted.

"Everyone inside!""

My mother grabbed my arm.

"Martin.""

The dark sedan accelerated toward the entrance.

Security vehicles moved to block it.

The sedan swerved, struck a barrier, and stopped.

Two officers approached with weapons drawn.

The driver's door opened.

Martin stepped out.

He wasn't holding a weapon.

He was holding a small white envelope.

He raised it above his head.

"Don't shoot!""

The officers ordered him to the ground.

He looked directly at me.

"Your mother has lied to you!""

My mother pulled me behind her.

"Don't listen.""

Martin smiled.

"Ask her who killed Robert.""

Then he dropped the envelope.

A photograph slid across the pavement.

It showed my mother standing beside Robert Bennett.

On the back was a date.

The day Robert died.

And beneath it, in my mother's handwriting, were six words:

*I didn't know he was still breathing.*
