Chapter 18: The Daughter Nobody Knew

Evelyn's confession changed everything.

My mother wasn't simply an accountant who had uncovered a family crime.

She had been part of the Bennett family.

Robert had adopted her after his first wife died, then erased her existence when she became a threat to his business.

I looked at Evelyn.

"You're saying my mother was Robert's daughter?""

"His adopted daughter," she replied.

"He never spoke about her publicly. He said she was too fragile for the family business.""

"Why did she leave?""

Evelyn's eyes filled.

"Because she discovered what he was doing.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Robert told everyone he had no children from his first marriage.""

"He lied," Evelyn said.

"He wanted the company to pass through Derek's father. Anna was inconvenient.""

Dad stepped forward.

"Was she legally adopted?""

Evelyn nodded.

"There were papers. Robert had them destroyed after she left.""

Renee's expression sharpened.

"Not necessarily. Adoption records aren't something a private individual can simply erase.""

Evelyn looked at her.

"Then there may be another copy.""

"Where?""

Evelyn hesitated.

"Robert's old estate. In the library.""

Daniel frowned.

"The estate was sold years ago.""

"Not the entire property. The library was sealed after his death.""

Dad looked at Detective Harris.

"We need to verify this.""

Harris nodded.

"But first, Margaret.""

He received another message from the Oregon team.

The warehouse location had been confirmed.

The hostage vehicle was parked inside.

Officers were preparing to approach.

Dad took the decoy notebook.

"I'm going.""

Renee caught his arm.

"Remember the plan. You don't enter until the officers give the signal.""

He nodded.

Then he looked at me.

"I'll bring Margaret home.""

I wanted to believe him.

I needed to.

Before he left, I gave him the photograph of my mother.

"Tell her I'm waiting.""

He kissed my forehead.

"I will.""

The hours that followed were unbearable.

I sat beside Lily's crib at the secured residence, watching her tiny chest rise and fall.

Every time my phone vibrated, I jumped.

At 9:18 p.m., Detective Harris called.

"Your father is at the warehouse.""

"Is Margaret there?""

"We believe so.""

"Have they found my mother?""

"Not yet.""

I looked at Lily.

"Please bring them both home.""

"We're doing everything we can.""

The call ended.

At 9:43, another message arrived.

A photograph.

Dad was standing in a large industrial room, holding the black notebook.

Martin stood opposite him.

Derek was beside Martin.

Vanessa was near a metal staircase.

And Margaret was sitting in a chair with her hands tied.

The message beneath the photograph read:

*The notebook first. Then the woman.*

I called Harris immediately.

He answered on the first ring.

"Don't respond to anything.""

"That's my father in there.""

"I know. We're watching.""

"He's standing right in front of them.""

"We have officers in position.""

I could hear voices behind him.

Then a sharp crash.

The photograph disappeared.

A new message arrived.

*Your father brought the wrong book.*

I stopped breathing.

Another message followed.

*Now we'll take the right one.*

I called Harris again.

This time, he didn't answer.

I stood up, holding Lily.

The security officer rushed toward me.

"Ma'am, what's wrong?""

"Something happened at the warehouse.""

He took Lily carefully and guided me back toward the sofa.

Then the phone rang.

Dad.

I answered.

"Dad?""

His voice was strained.

"Listen carefully. Margaret is safe.""

I began crying.

"Where are you?""

"With the police. But Martin got away.""

"Where's Derek?""

A pause.

"He's been arrested.""

I closed my eyes.

For the first time in days, I could breathe.

"And Vanessa?""

"Also in custody.""

"Where's Mom?""

Another pause.

"That's why I'm calling.""

My heart sank.

"What happened?""

"Martin had been using a second location. We found evidence that your mother was moved there before the warehouse meeting.""

"Do they know where?""

"Yes.""

"Then go get her.""

"I can't.""

"Why?""

Dad's voice broke.

"Because the address is the Bennett estate.""

I looked at Evelyn's old photograph on the table.

The estate.

The sealed library.

The place where Robert had hidden the truth about my mother's adoption.

"Is she there?""

"We don't know.""

Then Dad said something that made my blood run cold.

"There's a room beneath the library. The police found it behind a false wall.""

"What room?""

"A private archive.""

He took a breath.

"And your mother's name is on the door.""

I stared at the floor.

"Is she inside?""

"We found her belongings. Her coat. Her bag. Her medication.""

"Where is she, Dad?""

"I don't know.""

I heard another voice in the background.

A police officer speaking urgently.

Dad moved away from the noise.

Then he whispered:

"There's a recording in the archive. It was made by Robert before he died.""

"What does it say?""

Dad hesitated.

"It explains why your mother disappeared.""

"Tell me.""

"I can't. Not over the phone.""

"Why not?""

"Because the recording names the person who helped Robert fake his death.""

I went cold.

"Robert is dead.""

Dad didn't answer.

Then I heard a woman's voice behind him.

A voice I had spent sixteen years believing I would never hear again.

"Charles?""

My breath caught.

"Mom?""

There was a rustle.

Then my mother's voice came through the phone.

"My darling girl.""

I began sobbing.

"Where are you?""

"I'm here. I'm alive.""

"Are you hurt?""

"Not badly.""

"Come home. Please.""

She took a shaky breath.

"I will. But first, you need to know something about Derek.""

I pressed the phone harder against my ear.

"What?""

My mother lowered her voice.

"He wasn't sent to marry you because of the inheritance.""

I looked at Lily.

"Then why?""

"Because Robert believed you were the only person who could identify his son.""

I frowned.

"His son?""

My mother was crying now.

"Robert had another child. A son he hid from everyone.""

I heard Dad say something in the background.

Then my mother whispered the name.

"Martin Cole.""

I stopped breathing.

"Martin is Robert's son?""

"Yes. And Derek knew.""

A long silence followed.

Then my mother said the words that shattered everything I thought I knew.

"Your husband wasn't working for Martin, darling.""

"He was working with him.""

"Because Martin promised him something far more valuable than your inheritance.""

I could barely speak.

"What?""

My mother answered.

May you like

"Your daughter.""

The line went dead.
