Chapter 14: The Baby Bracelet
The hospital bracelet arrived in an evidence photograph twenty minutes later.
It was white plastic, slightly yellowed around the edges, with a small blue clasp.
The printed name was clear.
ANNA HAYES.
Below it was a date.
The date Lily was born.
I stared at it until the letters blurred.
"Why would Derek have this?""
Detective Harris sat beside the bed.
"We're trying to establish that. The bracelet was found inside a locked drawer in his office.""
"Was there anything else?""
"Several photographs, a handwritten note, and a hospital visitor log.""
Renee leaned forward.
"May we see the note?""
The detective placed a photograph on the table.
The handwriting was familiar.
My mother's.
My darling girl,
I saw you holding your daughter today. I wanted to come closer. I wanted to tell you everything. But there were people watching, and I couldn't risk bringing them to you.
I pressed my hand against my mouth.
She had been there.
My mother had seen Lily.
She had seen me.
And she had left without telling me.
The letter continued.
I know you may never forgive me for disappearing. I hope one day you'll understand that every decision I made was meant to keep you safe.
I have spent sixteen years waiting for the right moment to come home. I thought your marriage might finally give you the protection and happiness you deserved.
I was wrong about Derek.
I looked at Dad.
He had gone completely still.
The final paragraph was written in darker ink.
If something happens to me, do not trust anyone who tells you that the trust is the only thing I left behind. The most important document is the one that proves who ordered the accident.
I lowered the paper.
"She knew.""
Daniel nodded.
"She must have discovered something recently.""
"What?""
"I don't know.""
Detective Harris placed another photograph on the table.
It showed the hospital visitor log.
One entry had been circled.
*Anna Hayes — 11:36 a.m.*
The visitor's signature was followed by a staff member's initials.
I looked closer.
The initials belonged to a nurse I'd met during my delivery.
"Can we speak to her?""
The detective nodded.
"She's already been contacted.""
An hour later, a woman named Patricia entered the room.
She looked nervous.
She recognized me immediately.
"Mrs. Bennett?""
"Yes.""
She glanced at Dad and the detective.
"I understand you're asking about a visitor who came here the day your daughter was born.""
I nodded.
"Anna Hayes.""
Patricia looked down.
"She was here.""
My heart began pounding.
"Did you see her?""
"Yes. She was an older woman. Very polite. She asked whether you'd delivered safely.""
"Did she come into my room?""
Patricia hesitated.
"Briefly.""
I felt tears gather.
"She saw me?""
"Yes.""
"What did she say?""
Patricia swallowed.
"She stood beside your bed for a few minutes. You were sleeping. She touched your hand and said she was sorry.""
I began crying.
Dad took my hand.
"Did she leave anything?""
Patricia nodded.
"A small envelope. She asked me to give it to you when you woke up.""
I looked at the detective.
"Where is it?""
Patricia looked embarrassed.
"I gave it to your husband.""
My blood ran cold.
"Why?""
"He told me he was your spouse and would make sure you received it.""
"Did he say anything else?""
Patricia nodded.
"He told me the woman was confused and had mistaken you for someone else.""
Renee stood.
"Did you believe him?""
"I didn't know what to think. He was very convincing.""
I looked at the photograph of the bracelet.
Derek hadn't simply taken the package from our porch.
He had intercepted my mother's message inside the hospital.
He had known she was alive.
And he had hidden the proof.
"Did he open the envelope?"" I asked.
Patricia lowered her eyes.
"I saw him read it.""
The room went silent.
Dad stood.
"Thank you, Patricia. We'll need your full statement.""
After she left, Renee placed the photograph of the note beside the visitor log.
"There's a serious question here. Why did Derek keep the bracelet and letter instead of destroying them?""
Daniel answered.
"Because he was looking for the other document.""
"Which document?""
"The one that identifies the person who ordered the accident.""
I looked at him.
"You think Derek knows who did it?""
Daniel nodded.
"He might.""
Then Evelyn spoke from the doorway.
"Not might.""
Everyone turned.
She had returned with another folder.
Inside was a copy of an old legal document bearing Robert Bennett's signature.
"I found this in my husband's private files after he died.""
Dad took it.
It was an agreement between Robert and Martin Cole.
The document described a payment made to a private investigator and a separate payment to someone listed only by initials.
Renee examined the bottom.
"These initials are R.S.""
Evelyn nodded.
"Rebecca Shaw.""
Daniel went pale.
"That's impossible.""
"She was working for Martin at the time," Evelyn explained.
"She handled private assignments.""
Dad studied the signature.
"What was the assignment?""
Evelyn turned to the final page.
There was a handwritten instruction.
*Ensure Anna never reaches Charles.*
My throat tightened.
Anna.
My mother.
But the document was dated twelve days ago.
Not sixteen years ago.
Someone had hired Rebecca Shaw to find my mother again.
Renee pointed to a second signature.
The person authorizing the payment wasn't Robert.
It was Derek.
I stared at the page.
"He ordered her disappearance.""
Nobody contradicted me.
Then Daniel suddenly grabbed the document.
"Wait.""
He examined the date.
His face drained of color.
"This wasn't signed by Derek.""
I frowned.
"What?""
Daniel pointed to the signature.
"That's Martin's handwriting.""
Evelyn shook her head.
"No. Look at the authorization stamp.""
Daniel turned the page.
There was a digital verification code.
He stared at it for several seconds.
Then he whispered:
"Vanessa.""
The room went silent.
Renee immediately called Detective Harris.
But before she could explain, my phone rang.
The number was unfamiliar.
I answered.
A woman's voice came through.
"Sweetheart?""
I stopped breathing.
"Mom?""
A shaky breath.
Then the words I'd dreamed of hearing for sixteen years.
"It's me.""
I began crying.
"Where are you?""
"Somewhere safe. For now.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"I tried.""
"Mom, I need you.""
Her voice broke.
"I know. I saw the photographs of Lily. She's beautiful.""
I pressed my hand against my chest.
"Come home.""
There was a long silence.
Then she whispered:
"I can't, darling. Not until I tell you who really ordered the accident.""
I looked at Dad.
He was staring at the phone.
My mother continued.
"Because the person who arranged it wasn't Robert Bennett.""
A sharp noise interrupted her.
Someone had opened a door.
My mother gasped.
Then a man's voice spoke in the background.
"Anna. Put the phone down.""
The call ended.
I stared at the screen.
And the last words I heard before the connection disappeared were not spoken by my mother.
May you like
They were spoken by Derek.
"Hello, sweetheart. Did you miss me?""
