Chapter 9: The Betrayal Hidden Behind a Smile

I spent the entire drive home trying to convince myself I wasn’t afraid.

I failed.

Because the scariest part wasn’t discovering that my family had secrets.

It was realizing the secrets were still alive.

Still moving.

Still affecting my life.

Someone inside my family knew.

Someone had information.

Someone was hiding the truth.

And the worst part?

I already had a suspicion.

When I arrived home, Madison was waiting outside.

The timing was too perfect.

“You knew,” I said.

She looked confused.

“About what?””

“Don’t pretend.””

Her expression changed.

“Emily…”

“Adrian said someone inside my family knew.””

She looked away.

That tiny movement told me everything.

“Madison.””

She closed her eyes.

“I didn’t want this to happen.””

My heart sank.

“What did you do?””

“I didn’t mean to hurt you.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She looked at me.

“I found something.””

“What?””

“Documents.””

My stomach tightened.

“Where?””

“In my mom’s office.””

Victoria.

Of course.

“When?””

“A few weeks ago.””

I stared at her.

“And you said nothing?””

“I was scared.””

Everyone had the same excuse.

Fear.

Fear.

Fear.

But fear didn’t only create victims.

Sometimes it created people who stayed silent while others suffered.

“What were the documents?””

Madison swallowed.

“They were about your mother.””

I felt a chill.

“What about her?””

“They mentioned my mother too.””

That surprised me.

“Victoria?””

Madison nodded.

“My mom wasn’t just involved after your father married her.””

I waited.

“She knew your mother before.””

The world seemed to stop.

“What?””

“They were connected.””

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

Madison looked miserable.

“But I think my mother knew about the deal.””

I closed my eyes.

Another secret.

Another hidden piece.

Another person who had chosen silence.

I went straight to Victoria’s house.

This time, I didn’t care about being polite.

She opened the door.

And when she saw my face, she knew.

“You found out.””

I stared at her.

“You knew my mother.””

Victoria said nothing.

That was enough.

“How?””

She stepped aside.

“Come in.””

I almost refused.

But I needed answers.

“I met your mother years before I met Daniel.””

I listened.

“We weren’t friends.””

“Then what were you?””

Her face changed.

“Enemies.””

That shocked me.

“Why?””

“Because we wanted different things.””

Victoria sat down.

“Your mother wanted to expose the company Daniel worked with. I wanted to protect my family.””

I stared at her.

“Your family?””

“My daughter.””

Madison.

Victoria continued.

“I was afraid if the truth came out, everyone connected to that company would lose everything.””

“So you helped hide it.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was unexpected.

“But I didn’t know it would go this far.””

I laughed quietly.

“People always say that after the damage is done.””

Victoria looked down.

“I made choices because I was scared.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Being scared explains why someone makes a mistake.””

I looked at her.

“It doesn’t excuse choosing yourself over everyone else.””

She had no answer.

Later that night, my father called.

I almost didn’t answer.

But I did.

“Emily.””

“Did you know Victoria knew my mother?””

Silence.

That was enough.

“Dad.””

“I didn’t know everything.””

“But you knew something.””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

Another betrayal.

Another piece of my life that had been kept from me.

“How many secrets are there?””

My father sounded broken.

“I don’t know.””

That answer terrified me more than anything.

Because it meant the people around me had been lying for so long that even they no longer knew where the lies ended.

The next morning, Clara called.

Her voice was urgent.

“Emily, turn on the news.””

I grabbed the remote.

The screen showed a breaking story.

A major company was being investigated.

The headline made my blood run cold.

Because beneath it was another story.

A leaked document.

A document with my name attached.

My heart stopped.

“What is happening?””

Clara was quiet.

Then she said:

“Someone is trying to make you the face of this scandal.””

I stared at the screen.

The world I had just entered was changing.

The project I had built.

My mother’s legacy.

My father’s mistakes.

Everything was crashing together.

And then the reporter said the words that made me freeze.

“Sources indicate Emily Carter may have had access to confidential information before the investigation began.””

I felt numb.

Because I finally understood.

This was never just about exposing my family.

It was about destroying me.

Someone wanted me to lose everything.

My career.

My reputation.

My future.

And the worst part?

The person doing it knew exactly where to hurt me.

May you like

Because they weren’t a stranger.

They were family.
