Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Invitation

The gala was everything I imagined.

The lights.

The music.

The powerful people moving through the room as if they owned the world.

But strangely, none of it impressed me anymore.

Because I had already survived the hardest part.

Walking in without needing anyone to open the door.

The woman beside me, Clara Bennett, introduced me to several people throughout the evening.

Clara was the founder of a company that had transformed the creative industry. She was known for discovering young talent, but she was also known for being impossible to impress.

Which was why I still couldn’t believe she wanted to meet me.

“You’re quieter than I expected,” Clara said as we stood near the balcony.

I smiled.

“Is that a bad thing?””

“No.””

She looked toward the crowd.

“Most people come into rooms like this trying to prove they belong.””

She turned back to me.

“You walked in knowing you already did.””

I didn’t tell her the truth.

That confidence had only appeared tonight.

Because hours earlier, I was still the girl wondering why her father never chose her.

Across the room, I saw him.

My father.

He kept looking at me.

Not with anger.

With uncertainty.

Like he was trying to understand when I stopped being the daughter who needed him.

Eventually, he walked over.

“Emily.””

I turned.

“Dad.””

His eyes moved to Clara.

“Who is this?””

Clara extended her hand.

“Clara Bennett.””

My father’s expression changed immediately.

Everyone knew Clara.

“Bennett Industries?””

Clara nodded.

“Yes.””

Then she smiled.

“Emily and I have been discussing a possible partnership.””

My father looked at me.

“A partnership?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

For the first time in my life, I saw something I had never seen in his eyes.

Pride.

But it was mixed with regret.

And maybe that was why his next words surprised me.

“I didn’t know.””

I looked at him.

“You didn’t ask.””

The silence between us was heavier than the music around us.

He opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

Because there was nothing he could say.

Not without admitting the truth.

He had spent years assuming Madison needed him more.

He never stopped to wonder if I needed him too.

Then Madison approached.

She looked uncomfortable.

“Emily…”

I turned toward her.

“I owe you an apology.””

I didn’t expect that.

She took a breath.

“I didn’t realize how important this was to you.””

I looked at her carefully.

Maybe she was finally understanding.

Maybe.

“I hope you had a good night,” I said.

She nodded.

“But I know I took something from you.””

“No,” I replied.

She looked surprised.

“I thought the ticket was the opportunity.””

I glanced around the room.

“At first, I did too.””

Then I smiled.

“But I was wrong.””

Because the truth was, my father didn’t steal my future.

He only revealed who was never meant to control it.

And while he was busy giving away my place…

Someone else was waiting to give me a bigger one.

Later that night, Clara handed me a folder.

Inside was a proposal.

A chance to lead a major creative project.

My dream project.

The one I thought was impossible.

“You deserve this,” Clara said.

I looked at the papers.

Then I looked across the room at my father.

He was watching me.

For years, I had wanted him to see my worth.

Now he finally did.

But the strange thing was…

I didn’t need him to anymore.

May you like

I closed the folder.

And for the first time in my life, I walked forward without looking back.
