Chapter 12: The Final Mask Falls

I spent the entire night trying to figure out who Adrian meant.

Someone I trusted.

Someone close.

Someone who had been beside me since the beginning.

The list wasn’t long.

But every possibility felt impossible.

Clara?

No.

Absolutely not.

She had believed in me when nobody else did.

My father?

No.

He had made mistakes, but he was trying.

Madison?

She had confessed.

She had risked everything.

Then who?

The next morning, Adrian called again.

This time, I answered immediately.

“Tell me.””

“I need you to meet me.””

“Why won’t you just say the name?””

“Because if I’m wrong, I destroy someone innocent.””

That stopped me.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

I met him in the same place as before.

He looked exhausted.

“You need to understand something,” he said.

“I’m listening.””

“Your mother’s investigation wasn’t destroyed because of your father.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Daniel made a terrible choice. But someone else manipulated him.””

“Who?””

Adrian looked at me.

“Clara Bennett.””

The world went silent.

“No.””

“I know what you’re thinking.””

“She helped me.””

“Yes.””

“She protected me.””

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

Adrian handed me a folder.

Inside were financial records.

Payments.

Transfers.

My hands went cold.

“What is this?””

“Clara’s company received funding from the same organization your mother was investigating.””

I stared at the papers.

“That doesn’t prove anything.””

“No.””

Adrian nodded.

“But this does.””

He showed me another document.

A contract.

With Clara’s signature.

My stomach dropped.

“This is impossible.””

“Is it?””

I thought back.

The first time Clara contacted me.

The first time she showed interest in my work.

The first time she appeared when I needed someone.

Was it all coincidence?

Or was I being guided?

Used?

I refused to believe it.

I couldn’t.

Because Clara had been the person who gave me confidence when everyone else took it away.

But people were complicated.

And sometimes the people who save you are also the ones who hurt you.

I called her.

“Emily?””

Her voice sounded normal.

Too normal.

“We need to talk.””

A pause.

“Of course.””

When I arrived at her office, she already knew.

“You found the documents.””

I froze.

“You knew?””

She smiled sadly.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t.””

My heart broke.

Not because I was surprised.

Because I was disappointed.

“Why?””

She looked away.

“Because I needed access.””

“To what?””

“To your mother’s evidence.””

I stepped back.

“You used me.””

“No.””

Her answer was immediate.

“I protected you.””

“While using me?””

She was silent.

That was enough.

“Why?””

Clara sat down.

“Because your mother was close to exposing everything.””

“So you stopped her?””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“I tried to control the damage.””

I shook my head.

“That’s what everyone says.””

She looked emotional.

“I lost my family too.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“My father was involved with that company. When your mother started investigating, everything collapsed.””

I understood.

Clara wasn’t just connected.

She was part of the story.

“But why help me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because your mother saved me.””

That shocked me.

“What?””

“She knew my family was involved. She could have destroyed us.””

“But she didn’t.””

“No.””

Clara smiled sadly.

“She gave me a chance to choose differently.””

I looked at her.

“Then why betray her?””

“Because I was weak.””

The honesty was painful.

“I thought I could fix everything quietly.””

“And instead?””

“I became exactly what I hated.””

Silence filled the room.

For years, everyone had been making choices out of fear.

My father.

Victoria.

Madison.

Clara.

All of them.

And every fearful choice created another wound.

“What do you want now?””

Clara looked at me.

“The truth.””

I almost laughed.

“Now?””

“Yes.””

“After everything?””

She nodded.

“After everything.””

For a long moment, I said nothing.

Then I stood.

“I don’t know if I can forgive you.””

“I understand.””

“But I need the truth.””

She nodded.

“I’ll give it to you.””

Outside her office, I felt something strange.

Not relief.

Not anger.

Something in between.

Because the final person behind the secrets had finally revealed herself.

But there was still one question left.

Why had my mother trusted so many people who eventually failed her?

And what would happen when the world finally learned the complete truth?

May you like

Because one thing was certain.

The story everyone believed was only the beginning.
