Chapter 9: Margaret’s Truth
I called the number immediately.
Margaret answered.
“Claire.””
Her voice was fragile.
Old.
But calm.
“Put Lily on.””
“Listen to me.””
“PUT MY DAUGHTER ON THE PHONE!””
A rustle.
Then Lily’s voice.
“Mom?””
My knees nearly collapsed.
“Baby.””
“I’m okay.””
“Did she hurt you?””
“No.””
“Are you scared?””
“A little.””
Margaret spoke softly in the background.
“You’re safe, sweetheart.””
I gripped the phone.
“Do not speak to her.””
“Claire—”
“You took my child.””
“I saved her.””
“From what?””
“Graham.””
My heart hammered.
“He was alone with her.””
“Yes.””
“And you took her from him?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“I told Lily you sent me.””
I closed my eyes.
“Lily, I did not send her.””
“I know now.””
The fear in her voice tore through me.
“Stay on the phone.””
Margaret returned.
“I’m sorry.””
“You will be.””
“Claire, there isn’t time.””
“Tell me where you are.””
“I can’t.””
“Then I’m done talking.””
“Thomas Whitmore is alive.””
I froze.
Samuel heard.
His face changed.
“Where?””
“I don’t know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I haven’t seen him in thirty years.””
“Then why are you telling me?””
“Because he is your father.””
The world stopped.
I didn’t respond.
Couldn’t.
Margaret continued.
“Caroline loved him.””
Samuel shook his head slowly.
I pressed the phone tighter against my ear.
“Dad’s cousin.””
“Yes.””
“My biological father was Dad’s cousin?””
“Yes.””
“Why did Caroline tell Richard the baby was his?””
“To protect you.””
“From Thomas?””
Margaret was silent.
“Why would she protect me from my own father?””
“Because Thomas wasn’t the man she thought he was.””
My skin prickled.
“What did he do?””
“He became obsessed.””
“With Caroline?””
“With control.””
Margaret exhaled.
“When she became pregnant, she wanted to leave him.””
“And?””
“He told her she couldn’t.””
“So she lied to Richard?””
“Richard had been pursuing her too. He was married, wealthy, arrogant. Caroline knew that if Thomas believed Richard was the father, he might back away.””
“That’s insane.””
“She was twenty years old and terrified.””
I closed my eyes.
“Did it work?””
“For a while.””
“What happened?””
“Thomas discovered the truth.””
“When?””
“Shortly before you were born.””
“And Richard?””
“He discovered Caroline had lied to him years later.””
“Then why watch me?””
“Because he was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That Caroline had documented his affair and his threats.””
“So this was never about me.””
“At first, no.””
The truth hurt in a strange way.
I had spent hours imagining Richard as some dark biological connection.
Instead, I had been evidence.
A living connection to a scandal.
“Why did Richard have Daniel steal my DNA?””
“To prove you weren’t his daughter.””
“And after he proved it?””
“He wanted to know whose daughter you were.””
“Why?””
“Because he suspected Thomas.””
Samuel leaned closer.
I put the phone on speaker.
Margaret continued.
“Richard and Thomas hated each other.””
“Why?””
“Business. Women. Money. Everything.””
“Where does Mom fit?””
“Evelyn loved Robert.””
That matched the tape.
“She believed Caroline was taking him from her.””
“Were they together?””
“No.””
“Dad and Caroline?””
“Robert cared about her. That was all.””
“So Mom sold Caroline’s location to Richard out of jealousy?””
“Partly.””
“What else?””
“Thomas paid her too.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“Evelyn took money from both men.””
Samuel whispered, “My God.””
“How do you know?””
“Caroline showed me.””
“The notebook?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you go to police?””
“I tried.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says that.””
“I did.””
“What happened?””
“The officer I spoke to told me Caroline was an unstable young woman involved with married men.””
My jaw tightened.
“He said there was no crime.””
“And after Caroline died?””
“I wanted you.””
That silenced me.
“I went to the hospital.””
“You were there?””
“Too late.””
“Dad took me.””
“Robert had already filed emergency guardianship paperwork.””
“Why didn’t you fight?””
“I did.””
My throat tightened.
“What happened?””
“Thomas appeared.””
I closed my eyes.
“He threatened you.””
“He threatened you.””
That was worse.
“He told me if I challenged Robert, he would establish paternity and take you himself.””
“Could he?””
“I didn’t know.””
“So you disappeared.””
“I stayed away.””
“For thirty-two years.””
“I watched from a distance.””
Anger burned through me.
“You all watched me.””
“Claire—”
“Richard watched me. Daniel watched me. Mom watched me struggle.
Vanessa watched me lose everything. You watched me grow up.””
“I was afraid.””
“And now you take Lily?””
“To keep her from Graham.””
Graham.
I remembered Vanessa’s warning.
Don’t trust Graham.
“Why?””
“Because Graham contacted me six months ago.””
I stared at Samuel.
“What?””
“He knew who you were.””
My chest tightened.
“No.””
“He came to the blue house.””
“That’s impossible.””
“He had Caroline’s photograph.””
I felt sick.
“Why would he?””
“Richard gave it to him.””
My hand started shaking.
“What did Graham want?””
“He asked about Claire Whitmore Bennett.””
Me.
“He said he was considering marrying Vanessa and wanted to understand why his father opposed the relationship.””
That was plausible.
Too plausible.
“What did you tell him?””
“Almost nothing.””
“Did you tell him about me?””
“I told him you were Caroline’s daughter.””
“So he knew before the wedding.””
“Yes.””
My mind raced backward.
Graham’s shocked face.
His reaction to Richard’s name.
His insistence that he didn’t know.
Was all of it an act?
“Did he know Richard wasn’t my father?””
“I don’t know.””
“Then why did you take Lily from him?””
“Because yesterday, before the wedding, Graham came to my house again.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
“He asked for page twenty-eight.””
Samuel and I looked at each other.
“He knew about the notebook?””
“Yes.””
“What did you do?””
“I refused.””
“And then?””
“Vanessa arrived.””
That explained why Vanessa had picked Margaret up.
“What happened?””
“They argued.””
“About what?””
“Graham accused Vanessa of stealing from you.””
My mind stopped.
“He knew?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Evan told him.””
“When?””
“Two days ago.””
Graham had known before the wedding.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
“And he still married her?””
“He wanted proof.””
“Why didn’t he tell me?””
“You’ll have to ask him.””
“Where did Vanessa take you?””
“To the cabin.””
“Why?””
“She thought Graham was working for Richard.””
“Was he?””
“I don’t know.””
“Then who tied Vanessa to the chair?””
Margaret went quiet.
“Thomas.””
My pulse hammered.
“He’s alive.””
“Yes.””
“You saw him?””
“For the first time in thirty years.””
“Where is he now?””
“I don’t know.””
“Stop saying that!””
“He came to the cabin after Vanessa brought me there. He wanted the notebook. We didn’t have it.””
“And Mom?””
“Evelyn arrived later.””
“Did Thomas hurt her?””
“Yes.””
“Is she alive?””
“She was when I left.””
“How did you leave?””
“Vanessa helped me.””
That stunned me.
“What?””
“Thomas went outside when he heard a vehicle. Vanessa cut my restraints against a broken metal edge.””
“Then why was Vanessa still there?””
“She stayed to distract him.””
My sister.
Vanessa.
The woman who had stolen from me.
The woman who had humiliated me.
The woman who had called Lily useless.
Stayed behind so Margaret could escape.
Nothing was simple anymore.
“Why did you take Lily?””
“I drove to the bank because I thought you might be there.””
“How did you know?””
“Samuel.””
I turned toward him.
His face went pale.
“I never contacted her.””
Margaret continued.
“I saw Graham through the window.””
“And?””
“He was on the phone.””
“With who?””
“I couldn’t hear everything.””
“What did you hear?””
“‘The girl is here.’”
My blood froze.
Lily.
“He said that?””
“Yes.””
“Anything else?””
“He said, ‘Claire has the notebook.’”
I looked at Samuel.
His expression was grim.
Then I heard something through Margaret’s phone.
An engine.
Another vehicle.
Margaret suddenly stopped talking.
“What is it?””
“Someone followed us.””
My heart slammed against my ribs.
“Drive.””
“I am.””
“Where are you?””
“Route 1, heading south.””
The detective immediately started signaling to other officers.
“Margaret, police are coming.””
“No!””
“You have my daughter!””
“If police come, Thomas will run.””
“I don’t care about Thomas!””
“You should.””
“Why?””
“Because he isn’t following us.””
“What?””
The engine sound grew louder.
Lily screamed.
My blood turned to ice.
“Lily!””
“I’m okay!””
Margaret shouted something.
Tires squealed.
Then the line crackled.
“Who is it?”” I screamed.
Margaret’s voice returned.
Terrified now.
“I can see the driver.””
“Who?””
Silence.
“Margaret!””
“Oh God.””
“WHO IS IT?””
“It’s Graham.””
The call disconnected.
I stared at the phone.
No.
No.
No.
I called Graham.
He answered immediately.
“Claire?””
“Where are you?””
Silence.
“Graham.””
“Driving.””
My stomach dropped.
“Where?””
“Looking for Lily.””
“Where are you?””
“Claire, why?””
“Answer me.””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“Route 1.””
I nearly stopped breathing.
“Are you following a dark SUV?””
Another pause.
“Yes.””
My knees weakened.
“Why?””
“Because Lily is inside it!””
“Pull over.””
“What?””
“Pull over right now.””
“Claire—”
“Margaret says you’re chasing them.””
“She kidnapped your daughter!””
“Why did you tell someone ‘the girl is here’?””
Silence.
My skin went cold.
“Graham.””
“You don’t understand.””
“Who were you talking to?””
“My brother.””
Daniel.
“What did you tell him?””
“That Lily was safe.””
“That isn’t what Margaret heard.””
“She heard part of a conversation.””
“You told him I had the notebook.””
“I needed information.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel knows where my father is.””
I gripped the phone.
“Does he know Thomas?””
Silence.
“Graham?””
“Yes.””
My heart stopped.
“How?””
“Because Richard and Thomas have been working together for years.””
That made no sense.
“They hated each other.””
“They did.””
“Then why?””
“Because they had something bigger to hide.””
“What?””
Graham’s voice changed.
“Claire, your mother wasn’t the first person they paid.””
“Who else?””
“Doctors. Attorneys. Police.””
My mouth went dry.
“To hide what?””
“To hide what really happened to Caroline.””
“She died from childbirth complications.””
“No.””
The word struck me harder than anything else that day.
“What?””
“She survived.””
I couldn’t speak.
Graham continued.
“Caroline Bennett did not die in that hospital.””
I gripped the phone so tightly my fingers hurt.
“Then where is she?””
“I don’t know.””
“Graham!””
“My brother says she was transferred under another name.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
“Who arranged it?””
“Richard.””
I heard sirens in the distance through his phone.
May you like
Then Graham said something that made the entire world tilt.
“Claire, I think your mother may still be alive.””
