Chapter 11: Why She Stayed Away
I didn’t understand.
“From me?””
The detective nodded.
“Evan claims Caroline knows exactly who you are.””
The words hurt more than I expected.
I had spent the last hour allowing myself to imagine something impossible.
A reunion.
A woman waking from decades of stolen memories.
Seeing me.
Recognizing me.
Maybe crying.
Maybe touching my face.
Maybe saying the words I had never known I needed.
My daughter.
Now Evan was telling police she had known.
And stayed away.
“Take me to him.””
The detective hesitated.
“Claire—”
“Take me to Evan.””
An hour later, I entered a police interview room.
Evan Mercer sat behind a metal table.
He looked different from the wedding video.
Older.
Exhausted.
There was a bruise near his jaw.
His expensive clothes were wrinkled.
He stared at me.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he said, “You look like her.””
I hated how much those words affected me.
“Where is she?””
“Safe.””
“Where?””
“I can’t tell you yet.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Then this conversation is over.””
I turned.
“Wait.””
I stopped.
“You have every reason to hate me.””
“I don’t know you well enough to hate you.””
“Vanessa—”
“I saw the video.””
His face tightened.
“That wasn’t what you think.””
“Did you kiss her?””
“Yes.””
“Then it was at least partly what I think.””
He looked ashamed.
“Vanessa and I made mistakes.””
“Save it.””
I sat across from him.
“Tell me about Caroline.””
He swallowed.
“She raised me as Anna.””
“Did she remember me?””
“Not when I was little.””
“When?””
“Pieces started coming back about six years ago.””
Six years.
One year before Dad died.
“What happened?””
“She saw a photograph in a newspaper.””
“Of what?””
“Robert.””
My chest tightened.
“He had donated money to a hospital foundation. His picture was in an article.””
“She recognized him?””
“Immediately.””
“What did she remember?””
“A baby.””
“Me?””
“Yes.””
My eyes burned.
“What else?””
“Richard. Evelyn. Thomas.””
“Did she remember Margaret?””
“Later.””
“Why didn’t she contact anyone?””
“She was terrified.””
“Of what?””
“Of learning the memories weren’t real.””
I stared at him.
“She thought she was mentally ill?””
“She had been told that for thirty years.””
That silenced me.
Evan continued.
“When she was transferred from the hospital, she was placed in a private psychiatric facility.””
“By Richard?””
“He paid for it.””
“Why?””
“Because Thomas asked him to.””
My stomach twisted.
“They were working together even then?””
“Sometimes.””
“Why would Richard help Thomas?””
“Mutual destruction.””
“What?””
“Each had information that could ruin the other.””
I leaned forward.
“What information?””
“Richard had threatened Caroline and paid people to track her. Thomas had committed financial fraud through companies connected to Richard.””
“So they protected each other.””
“Yes.””
“And Mom?””
“Evelyn was useful.””
I hated hearing that.
“What did she do?””
“Signed forms. Carried messages. Moved money.””
“Why?””
“Because she wanted Robert.””
The cruelty of it was almost pathetic.
“She destroyed another woman because she loved a man who didn’t love her?””
Evan looked at me.
“Robert eventually did love her.””
“That makes it worse.””
“Yes.””
“What happened to Caroline at the facility?””
“She was medicated heavily.””
“Against her will?””
“I believe so.””
“For how long?””
“Almost eleven months.””
“And then?””
“She was discharged with almost no memory of the previous year.””
“How?””
“Different identity. Different town. Richard arranged an apartment and money.””
“He just released her?””
“By then Thomas had disappeared.””
“Where?””
“No one knew.””
“Why did Thomas leave?””
“Robert threatened him.””
I stared at Evan.
“Dad knew Thomas was my father?””
“Yes.””
“When did he find out?””
“After you were born.””
“Why didn’t he tell me?””
“Because he believed Thomas was dangerous.””
“And Richard?””
“Robert thought Richard had backed away.””
“He hadn’t.””
“No.””
I closed my eyes.
Dad had spent decades trying to protect me from men whose secrets he only partly understood.
“What happened when Caroline remembered Robert six years ago?””
“She found him.””
My eyes opened.
“What?””
“She contacted him.””
“When?””
“Five years ago.””
“Before he died?””
“About three weeks before.””
My pulse raced.
“What happened?””
“They met.””
“Where?””
“A diner outside Providence.””
“Did you go?””
“I drove her.””
“What did Dad say?””
“He cried.””
That image nearly destroyed me.
“Did he tell her about me?””
“Yes.””
“Everything?””
“Your marriage. Your divorce beginning. Lily.””
My chest tightened.
“She knew about Lily?””
“Yes.””
“Did she want to meet me?””
Evan looked away.
That was answer enough.
“She didn’t.””
“It wasn’t that simple.””
“It is exactly that simple.””
“No.””
He leaned forward.
“She begged Robert to let her meet you.””
I stopped.
“What?””
“He refused.””
Anger hit me so hard I stood.
“Dad stopped her?””
“He said it was too dangerous.””
“Why?””
“Because he had just discovered someone was still monitoring you.””
“Richard?””
“He didn’t know.””
“Daniel?””
“Maybe.””
“Thomas?””
“Possibly.””
I paced.
“So Dad told her to stay away.””
“Yes.””
“And then he died.””
“Three weeks later.””
My heart pounded.
“Did Caroline think his death was connected?””
“Yes.””
“That’s why she disappeared again.””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“I won’t tell you.””
I slammed my palm against the table.
“She is my mother!””
“And she is terrified!””
“So am I!””
Evan flinched.
I lowered my voice.
“She doesn’t get to decide whether I deserve the truth.””
“You’re right.””
“Then tell me where she is.””
“I promised.””
“Break it.””
He stared at me.
“Vanessa said the same thing.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She wanted me to bring Caroline to the wedding.””
“Why?””
“To confront Richard.””
My stomach turned.
“Richard wasn’t invited.””
“No. But Daniel was.””
I remembered Graham’s family table.
Several seats.
I hadn’t known who belonged there.
“Was Daniel at the wedding?””
“He was supposed to be.””
“Was he?””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew something was going to happen.””
“How?””
“I warned him.””
I stared.
“You warned Daniel?””
“I was trying to get Richard there.””
“Why?””
“To force everything into the open.””
“So you and Vanessa planned this?””
“Part of it.””
“The affair?””
His jaw tightened.
“No.””
“Then explain.””
“Vanessa contacted me after discovering Anna might be Caroline.””
“How?””
“Margaret.””
“Then?””
“We started working together.””
“And started sleeping together.””
Silence.
I shook my head.
“Brilliant.””
“I’m not proud of it.””
“You were sleeping with your possible half-sister’s cousin.””
“Vanessa isn’t related to you biologically.””
“Do you hear yourself?””
“Yes.””
He rubbed his face.
“It got complicated.””
“No. Taxes get complicated. This was reckless.””
He almost smiled.
Then his expression changed.
“Vanessa wanted to expose everything after marrying Graham.””
“Why after?””
“Access.””
“To what?””
“The Ellison family records.””
“Through Graham?””
“Yes.””
“So she was using him.””
“At first.””
“And later?””
“She loved him.””
I remembered Graham placing his ring on the table.
“Wonderful timing.””
Evan looked down.
“She wanted to undo what she did to you.””
I laughed.
“She stole 1.4 million dollars.””
“She knew.””
“She knew while I sold Dad’s watch.””
“She hated herself.””
“She had an interesting way of showing it.””
“She was trying to recover the money.””
“With Graham’s eight hundred thousand?””
His face tightened.
“No.””
“Then where is his money?””
“Vanessa moved it.””
“Where?””
“Into an account Richard couldn’t access.””
I stared.
“Why would Richard access Graham’s money?””
“Because the development fund was real.””
“What?””
“It was designed to draw Richard out.””
Now I was lost.
Evan leaned forward.
“Vanessa and I suspected Richard was laundering money through old development companies.””
“Companies used when he and Thomas worked together?””
“Yes.””
“We created a fund Richard would recognize.””
“Using Graham’s money without telling him?””
“Vanessa said Graham agreed to the investment.””
“Not the trap.””
“No.””
“That’s still theft.””
“Yes.””
At least he admitted it.
“Where is Vanessa?””
Evan’s eyes darkened.
“I don’t know.””
“Who took her?””
“Thomas.””
“You’re sure?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“He called me.””
My skin prickled.
“When?””
“Last night.””
“What did he want?””
“Caroline.””
“Why now?””
“Because Robert left something behind.””
“The notebook?””
“No.””
“What?””
“A blood sample.””
I stared at him.
“Whose?””
“Thomas’s.””
Samuel had said Dad knew more than everyone realized.
“What was he going to do with it?””
“Prove paternity.””
“Mine?””
“Yes.””
“Why does that matter now?””
“Because Thomas has spent thirty-two years denying you exist.””
“I don’t want anything from him.””
“It isn’t about what you want.””
“What is it about?””
Evan hesitated.
“An inheritance.””
I nearly laughed.
“Another one?””
“Not Robert’s.””
“Whose?””
“Thomas’s father.””
“What does that have to do with me?””
“Thomas inherited controlling shares in a private property company worth tens of millions.””
My stomach dropped.
“The trust has a bloodline clause.””
“What does that mean?””
“If Thomas dies without a legally recognized child, control passes to another branch of the family.””
“And if he has a child?””
“You inherit.””
I stared at him.
“I don’t care.””
“Richard does.””
“Why?””
“Because Richard secretly owns part of the company through shell entities.””
Everything came back to money.
Always money.
“If your paternity becomes public, years of transfers could be challenged.””
“So they want to erase me?””
“They wanted to make sure you never knew.””
“And now?””
“Now they know Robert kept evidence.””
I sat slowly.
“Where is the blood sample?””
“I don’t know.””
A knock sounded.
The detective entered.
His face was grim.
“We found Evelyn.””
I stood.
“Alive?””
“Yes.””
Relief came despite everything.
“Where?””
“At Robert’s old cabin.””
“But you searched it.””
“She was locked inside a concealed storage room beneath the floor.””
My stomach turned.
“Is she hurt?””
“Dehydrated. Bruising. She’s being transported.””
“Did she say who put her there?””
The detective nodded.
“Thomas Whitmore.””
My pulse jumped.
“Did she see Vanessa?””
“Yes.””
“Where is she?””
“We don’t know.””
“Margaret?””
“Safe.””
I exhaled.
Then the detective looked at Evan.
“Mr. Mercer, Evelyn said Thomas was demanding one thing.””
Evan’s face tightened.
“What?””
The detective turned to me.
“He wants Claire to meet him.””
“Where?””
“He hasn’t said.””
“Why?””
The detective hesitated.
“According to Evelyn, Thomas says he has Vanessa.””
My hands curled into fists.
May you like
“And if I don’t go?””
“He says Vanessa dies.””
