Calm

Chapter 14: Caroline

Richard Ellison died before I ever met him.

Police found him in the driveway of a small cottage forty miles from Newport.

Heart attack.

The irony was almost unbearable.

After thirty-two years of secrets, threats, surveillance, and manipulation, the man at the center of so much fear apparently died of natural causes while trying to reach the woman whose life he had helped destroy.

I didn’t know whether to feel relieved.

Angry.

Cheated.

Mostly, I felt tired.

Caroline was inside the cottage when police arrived.

Alive.

Uninjured.

And asking for me.

I sat in a police vehicle outside the property for nearly ten minutes before I could make myself open the door.

Samuel waited beside me.

“You don’t have to do this now.””

“Yes, I do.””

“She’ll still be here tomorrow.””

“I’ve lost thirty-two years of tomorrows.””

He didn’t argue.

The cottage was small.

White siding.

Blue shutters.

A porch overlooking a field.

Nothing about it looked like the hiding place of a woman whose existence had been erased by wealthy men and frightened relatives.

I entered.

A woman stood near the kitchen.

Anna.

Caroline.

My mother.

She looked exactly like the photograph Margaret had shown me.

But photographs didn’t capture movement.

The way she tilted her head.

The way she held one hand against the other when nervous.

The way her mouth trembled before she cried.

I did those things.

So did Lily.

She stared at me.

I stared back.

“Claire.””

Hearing my name from her in person broke something.

“You named me.””

She covered her mouth.

“Yes.””

“Evelyn said she did.””

“I’m sorry.””

I laughed through sudden tears.

“Everyone is sorry.””

“I know.””

Neither of us moved.

Then Caroline said:

“You don’t have to hug me.””

That was such a strange thing to say that I almost smiled.

“Okay.””

“You don’t have to call me Mom.””

“Okay.””

“You don’t owe me anything.””

That one mattered.

I nodded.

“Okay.””

She started crying.

“So why didn’t you come?””

Her face collapsed.

“I tried.””

“Evan said Dad stopped you.””

“He did at first.””

“Thomas said that was a lie.””

“Thomas lies when breathing.””

Despite everything, I laughed.

So did she.

It lasted two seconds.

Then we were crying again.

Caroline sat.

I sat across from her.

“Tell me.””

She took a long breath.

“When my memories began returning, I thought I was losing my mind.””

“Because you had been told you were mentally ill.””

“Yes.””

“Were you?””

“I was traumatized. Frightened. Depressed. But not what they claimed.””

“Richard arranged the facility.””

“With Thomas.””

“And Evelyn.””

Caroline looked down.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because they all wanted different things.””

“Richard wanted silence.””

“Yes.””

“Thomas wanted control.””

“Yes.””

“Evelyn wanted Robert.””

Caroline’s eyes filled.

“Yes.””

“And Dad?””

“He wanted you safe.””

“Was he my biological father?””

She closed her eyes.

“I don’t know.””

The answer hurt.

But at least it was honest.

“There were three possibilities?””

“Richard, Thomas, and Robert.””

“Yes.””

“Did Dad know you two had been together?””

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Because I was ashamed.””

“Of him?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Of myself.””

“Why?””

“Robert was dating Evelyn. Not seriously yet, but enough that I knew I had crossed a line.””

That was messy.

Human.

Believable.

“What happened?””

“One night. That was all.””

“And Thomas?””

“I had been seeing him secretly.””

“Why secretly?””

“Robert hated him.””

“Why?””

“Thomas had stolen money from their grandfather’s company.””

“Did Dad know?””

“He suspected.””

“And Richard?””

“He pursued me.””

“While married.””

“Yes.””

“Were you together?””

“Briefly.””

I exhaled.

“You had a complicated year.””

She almost smiled.

“You have no idea.””

“I’m starting to.””

Her face softened.

Then I asked the question that mattered.

“Why didn’t you contact me after Dad died?””

She looked away.

“I did.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“I called Evelyn.””

“When?””

“Three days after the funeral.””

“What did she say?””

Caroline’s eyes filled.

“She told me you blamed me for Robert’s death.””

I stared.

“She said Robert had met me secretly and that the stress of reopening the past caused his heart attack.””

“That’s not true.””

“I know now.””

“What else?””

“She said you knew I was alive.””

My hands curled.

“She told me you wanted nothing to do with me.””

I stood.

I couldn’t sit.

“She told you that?””

“Yes.””

“I didn’t even know you existed.””

“I know.””

“Why did you believe her?””

“Because I was still fragile.””

Her voice cracked.

“And because part of me believed you should hate me.””

“I was a child.””

“I know.””

“You were the adult.””

“I know.””

“You should have checked.””

“Yes.””

No excuse.

No defense.

Just yes.

That made it harder to stay angry.

Not impossible.

Harder.

“Evan said you knew about me.””

“I followed you online.””

“For how long?””

“Five years.””

I closed my eyes.

“You watched too.””

“Yes.””

“Why is everyone always watching me instead of talking to me?””

She cried.

“I was a coward.””

That answer was different.

Not protection.

Not love.

Fear.

“I saw pictures of Lily.””

I looked at her.

“She looks like you.””

“She looks like you.””

Caroline smiled through tears.

“I know.””

A long silence passed.

“Is that why Evan investigated Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

“Did you send him?””

“No. He discovered what I was doing.””

“And decided to help?””

“He wanted answers.””

“Then he slept with my sister.””

Caroline groaned.

“I told him that was a terrible idea.””

For some reason, that made me laugh.

A real laugh.

The first in days.

Caroline laughed too.

Then I covered my face.

“This family is insane.””

“You have no idea how often I’ve said that.””

When the laughter stopped, I looked at her.

“Richard died outside.””

Her expression changed.

“I know.””

“Why was he here?””

“He came to apologize.””

I stared.

“Seriously?””

“I didn’t believe him either.””

“What did he say?””

“That Daniel had confessed.””

My pulse jumped.

“Confessed what?””

Caroline reached toward the table.

There was a phone.

“Richard recorded their conversation.””

“Why?””

“He finally realized Daniel had been using him.””

“For what?””

“Money.””

Always money.

She pressed play.

Daniel’s voice filled the kitchen.

“You were supposed to scare Robert.””

Richard answered.

“I did.””

“He still called Samuel.””

“I didn’t know that.””

“Vanessa said he was going to expose everything.””

My pulse hammered.

Daniel continued.

“I went to the house.””

Richard’s voice sharpened.

“What did you do?””

“Nothing.””

“Daniel.””

“He was already having chest pain.””

I closed my eyes.

No.

Not again.

Daniel continued.

“He reached for the phone.””

Richard asked, “And?””

“I took it.””

My stomach turned.

Another phone.

Another person stopping Dad from calling for help.

“He collapsed.””

“Did you call an ambulance?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa came in.””

I froze.

Vanessa.

Daniel continued.

“She panicked. Evelyn came back. Everything went crazy.””

Richard said, “You left him there?””

Daniel answered:

“He was breathing when I left.””

The recording ended.

I stared at Caroline.

“Vanessa knew Daniel was there.””

“Yes.””

“She never told me.””

“Maybe she was afraid.””

“I’m tired of fear.””

Caroline nodded.

“So am I.””

My phone rang.

The detective.

Daniel Ellison had disappeared.

Again.

But this time police knew where he was headed.

Newport.

Toward the hospital.

Toward Evelyn.

“Why would he go to Mom?””

Caroline stood.

“Because she has the ledger.””

“How do you know?””

“Richard told me.””

I grabbed my coat.

Caroline caught my hand.

I looked down.

Her fingers were trembling.

“Claire.””

“What?””

“I know I have no right to ask.””

“Ask what?””

“Let me come.””

I looked at her.

My biological mother.

A stranger.

A victim.

A woman who had also made choices that hurt me.

For the first time, I realized I didn’t need to decide what she was to me today.

Maybe not tomorrow either.

“Come.””

Her eyes filled.

We drove toward the hospital.

Halfway there, Samuel called.

“Police found Daniel’s car.””

“Where?””

“Hospital parking garage.””

My heart pounded.

“Mom?””

“Her room is empty.””

I gripped the phone.

“What?””

“Daniel took her.””

“Where?””

“They’re checking cameras.””

A message appeared while Samuel spoke.

Unknown number.

A photograph.

Evelyn sat inside a car.

Daniel beside her.

He wasn’t threatening her.

They were both looking at the camera.

Below it:

CLAIRE, YOUR MOTHER HAS ONE LAST THING THAT BELONGS TO YOU.

Then a second message.

COME TO ROSEWOOD ESTATE.

The wedding venue.

Where everything had begun.

Caroline looked at the screen.

Her face went white.

“What?””

She pointed at the photograph.

“Zoom in.””

I did.

Evelyn was holding something.

A large brown envelope.

May you like

Across the front, in Dad’s handwriting, were three words.

CLAIRE — PATERNITY RESULTS.
