Chapter 8: The Secret Buried At The Ranch

The drive back to my father’s ranch felt unreal.

Fourteen months ago, that road had been filled with police cars, volunteers, and neighbors searching for my son.

Now I was driving back knowing the truth had been hiding there the entire time.

The ranch looked exactly the same.

That was the worst part.

The same gate.

The same trees.

The same old barn.

A place that had once represented family now looked like a crime scene.

The police followed at a distance.

I wasn’t alone.

Even though Marcus demanded I come alone, nobody believed he would keep his word.

Nobody except maybe me.

Because I understood something the others didn’t.

Marcus didn’t just want control.

He wanted to tell his version of the story.

People like him always did.

They didn’t just commit crimes.

They created narratives.

They convinced themselves they were the victim.

When we arrived, the side gate was open.

The same gate where Leo’s blue sneaker had been found.

I stared at it.

The memory hit me hard.

A tiny shoe.

A missing child.

A father who spent every day wondering if he should have been there.

I stepped forward.

“John.””

My father’s voice came from the darkness.

I stopped.

He walked out slowly.

Older than I remembered.

Broken.

For the first time, he looked like a man carrying the weight of what he had done.

“Where are they?””

He looked at me.

“Safe.””

I almost lost control.

“Safe?””

My voice echoed.

“My daughter is with a murderer.””

My father flinched.

“Marcus isn’t going to hurt them.””

“How do you know?””

“Because he needs them.””

That answer terrified me.

“What does that mean?””

My father looked toward the old barn.

“He wants the truth.””

I stared at him.

“The truth?””

My father nodded.

“The truth about what happened that night.””

I stepped closer.

“Then tell me.””

He looked away.

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because if Marcus hears me say it…”

He stopped.

“Say what?””

My father closed his eyes.

Then he whispered:

“I killed David.””

The world stopped.

I couldn’t move.

“What?””

My father looked destroyed.

“It wasn’t supposed to happen.””

I backed away.

“No.””

“It was an accident.””

“No.””

The word came out stronger.

“No, Dad.””

He looked at me.

“I found out what Marcus was doing.””

His voice cracked.

“I confronted him.””

The story changed again.

David.

Marcus.

Money.

The accident.

My father had been protecting the wrong person.

But then he said something I didn’t expect.

“Leo saw me.””

I stared.

“What?””

“The night Leo disappeared.””

My father looked toward the house.

“He wasn’t running from Marcus.””

My heart stopped.

“He was running from me.””

The pain of that sentence was unbearable.

My father continued.

“I found Leo near the gate.””

“What did you do?””

“I begged him to listen.””

“Did you touch him?””

“No.””

His answer came instantly.

“I would never hurt him.””

But I didn’t know what to believe anymore.

Not from anyone.

Not from family.

“Then why hide him?””

My father looked at me.

“Because Marcus found out Leo saw me.””

A sound came from the barn.

A child crying.

Maya.

I ran.

My father grabbed my arm.

“Wait.””

I pulled away.

“No.””

“John, listen.””

“What?””

His eyes filled with fear.

“He didn’t bring them here for revenge.””

I froze.

“Then why?””

My father whispered:

“He brought them here because there’s something buried under that barn.””

I looked toward the building.

“What?””

“The evidence.””

I stared at him.

“Evidence of what?””

My father’s voice dropped.

“The reason David died.””

The barn door creaked open.

Inside, Marcus stood waiting.

Maya was beside him.

Leo was behind him.

Both children were alive.

Both terrified.

Marcus smiled.

“Finally.””

I stepped forward.

“Let them go.””

He laughed.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Understand what?””

He looked at my father.

Then back at me.

“This was never about Leo.””

My stomach tightened.

“Then what was it about?””

Marcus smiled.

“Your family has been lying to you for years.””

May you like

He pointed toward the ground.

“And tonight, you’re going to learn why.””
