Chapter 5: The Truth My Sister Buried
The police separated everyone.
They took Leo to another room where a medical team could examine him.
Sarah refused to leave his side.
I understood.
After fourteen months of losing him, nobody was going to tell her to step away again.
I stayed in the hallway with Elena.
The sister I thought I knew.
The woman who had hugged me during the darkest moments of my life.
The woman who had helped us search for a child she had hidden.
At least, that was what it looked like.
“How long?”” I asked.
Elena stared at the floor.
“I don’t know what you mean.””
I laughed.
The sound surprised even me.
“Don’t do that.””
She looked up.
“Don’t pretend.””
Her face crumpled.
“I didn’t hide him because I wanted to hurt him.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“I was trying to keep him safe.””
“Safe?””
My voice rose.
“He was trapped under your house.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Then what was this?””
She didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“You brought him here.””
“I did.””
The confession hit harder than I expected.
“Why?””
Elena wiped her tears.
“Because I thought someone was going to kill him.””
The hallway became silent.
“What?””
She looked toward the room where Leo was being examined.
“Your father wasn’t the only person involved.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who else?””
Elena hesitated.
That hesitation scared me.
Because I knew she was deciding whether to reveal something that could not be taken back.
“Your father found out Leo saw something.””
“What did he see?””
Elena swallowed.
“He saw your father and Marcus arguing.””
My uncle.
Marcus.
The name felt like another blow.
“They were fighting about money,” Elena continued.
“Money?””
She nodded.
“Your father had been hiding debts. A lot of them.””
I stared at her.
“That doesn’t explain Leo.””
“No.””
Her voice dropped.
“Leo heard Marcus threaten him.””
The hallway tilted.
My uncle had always been the funny one.
The one who brought too many gifts.
The one who joked with the kids.
The one everyone trusted.
“What did he say?””
Elena looked away.
“Leo heard him say that if anyone found out, people would get hurt.””
My hands curled into fists.
“And you believed him?””
“I believed Leo.””
That stopped me.
Because Elena wasn’t defending herself.
She was admitting fear.
“When I saw Leo run away that night, I followed him,” she said.
“I thought I could bring him back before anyone noticed.””
“But someone found him first.””
She nodded.
“The SUV.””
“Dad’s car?””
“No.””
My heart sank.
“Then whose?””
Elena closed her eyes.
“Marcus’s.””
The name echoed.
I wanted to reject it.
I wanted to say she was wrong.
But too many pieces were falling into place.
The hidden room.
The note.
Leo’s fear.
My sister’s secrets.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her eyes filled again.
“Because when I confronted Marcus, he knew I had seen the car.””
“And?””
“He told me Leo was gone forever.””
A cold wave moved through me.
“He threatened you.””
She nodded.
“He said if I went to the police, he would make sure no one believed me.””
I stared at her.
“You could have told us.””
“I should have.””
“Yes.””
She looked down.
“I know.””
That was the hardest part.
She wasn’t making excuses anymore.
She was admitting she failed us.
“I was afraid,” she whispered.
The anger inside me fought with something else.
Because Elena had lied.
But she had also saved my son.
Both things were true.
And somehow that made it worse.
A detective approached.
“We need to talk.””
I turned.
“What happened?””
He looked serious.
“We found something else.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
He held up a small evidence bag.
Inside was a phone.
An old phone.
Leo’s phone.
Except Leo never had a phone.
Not at eight years old.
“This was found inside the room,” the detective said.
Elena looked confused.
“That wasn’t there before.””
I looked at her.
“You’re sure?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
The detective unlocked it.
The screen lit up.
There were only three contacts saved.
Dad.
Marcus.
Elena.
My chest tightened.
Then the phone started ringing.
Everyone looked at it.
Unknown number.
The detective answered.
“Hello?””
No one spoke.
Then a man’s voice came through.
A voice I recognized.
A voice that made every memory from the last fourteen months feel like a lie.
“Where is my grandson?””
My blood froze.
The detective looked at me.
I didn’t need him to say the name.
I knew.
My father.
Leo’s grandfather.
The man who had helped us search.
The man who had cried beside us.
The man who had been lying.
The detective put the call on speaker.
“Mr. Carter?””
Silence.
Then my father spoke.
“You found him.””
Not a question.
A statement.
My entire body went numb.
“How did you know?”” I whispered.
The line went quiet.
May you like
Then my father answered.
“Because I was the one who put him there.””
