Chapter 12: The Search For The Woman Who Vanished

Three weeks after Marcus’s arrest, we found the first real clue.

Not from the police.

Not from my father.

From Elena.

She came to our house early in the morning.

No makeup.

No perfect clothes.

No carefully controlled expression.

Just Elena.

My sister.

Broken.

“I found something.””

I let her inside.

For weeks, I had struggled with how I felt about her.

She lied to us.

She hid Leo.

But she also protected him.

The truth was complicated.

And complicated things were harder than hate.

“What did you find?””

She handed me an envelope.

“I kept this from the police.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

She looked ashamed.

“Because I was afraid.””

I almost smiled.

Everyone in my family had lived under fear.

The question was what fear made people do.

Inside the envelope was a photograph.

A woman standing outside a small cabin.

My mother.

Alive.

Older.

But alive.

My hands shook.

“When?””

Elena swallowed.

“Two years ago.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

“No.””

Her eyes filled.

“I suspected.””

“Where was this taken?””

She pointed to the back.

A location.

Northern Arizona.

A small town I had never heard of.

My heart raced.

“Why do you have this?””

Elena looked away.

“Because your mother contacted me.””

The room went silent.

“When?””

“After Leo disappeared.””

I stared.

“You talked to her?””

“Once.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Elena cried.

“Because she told me not to.””

I felt anger.

Again.

Always another secret.

“Why?””

“She said if Marcus knew she was alive, Leo wouldn’t be the only one in danger.””

That sentence changed everything.

My mother had known.

She had been watching.

Waiting.

Protecting us from a distance.

But why?

Why not come home?

Why leave us suffering?

The only way to know was to find her.

That afternoon, I made a decision.

I was going to Arizona.

Not because I wanted answers.

Because I needed them.

Sarah came with me.

So did Leo.

Maya too.

I hesitated at first.

But Sarah refused.

“No more leaving our family behind.””

She was right.

For too long, decisions had been made about us.

Without us.

We drove for hours.

The landscape changed.

The world became quieter.

The farther we went, the more I wondered if we were chasing another ghost.

But then we found the cabin.

Small.

Hidden.

Peaceful.

A place where someone could disappear.

I stepped onto the porch.

My hands shook.

I knocked.

Once.

No answer.

I knocked again.

The door opened slowly.

And there she was.

My mother.

The woman I had mourned.

The woman I had buried in my heart.

She looked at me.

Her face changed.

Then she whispered my name.

“John?””

I couldn’t speak.

Neither could she.

For years, I imagined this moment.

I imagined anger.

Questions.

Pain.

But when I finally saw her…

I only felt one thing.

Loss.

All the years we missed.

All the birthdays.

All the moments she wasn’t there.

She stepped forward.

“I’m sorry.””

That was all it took.

I broke.

I hugged my mother.

The same woman I thought I would never hold again.

Behind me, Leo stood frozen.

My mother looked at him.

And immediately covered her mouth.

“Is that…”

I nodded.

“My son.””

She cried.

“Leo.””

He stepped forward slowly.

“Grandma?””

She fell to her knees.

And for the first time in years…

my family held someone we thought was gone forever.

But before we could celebrate…

my mother pulled away.

Her expression changed.

Fear returned.

“John.””

“What?””

She looked toward the road.

“You shouldn’t have come here.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

She whispered:

“Because Marcus wasn’t working alone.””

A vehicle appeared in the distance.

Driving toward the cabin.

My mother’s face turned pale.

“He found us.””

May you like

And then she said the name that made everyone go silent.

“Your father.”” :::
