Chapter 8: The Recording From My Own House

The next morning, I arrived at Helen Carter's office at nine o'clock.

She was waiting with two thick folders and a large monitor.

“Good morning, Margaret.””

“Please tell me you've found something useful.””

“I think we have.””

She opened the first folder.

Inside were copies of the property loan application, the development agreement, and the witness declaration signed under Thomas's name.

The second folder contained something I hadn't expected.

A printed email conversation.

“What's this?””

“Correspondence between Richard Hayes and the lending company.””

I leaned forward.

Helen pointed to a paragraph.

“Three weeks before the wedding, Richard informed the lender that you had verbally approved the development arrangement.””

“That never happened.””

“Exactly. But he also stated that you were hesitant about signing the final documents because you were concerned about losing control of the property.””

I frowned.

“How would he know that?””

“Perhaps because Daniel told him.””

I looked at the email.

There was another line.

The family has agreed that the transfer will be completed after the wedding, once the celebratory expenses have been settled.

I stared at the words.

“They were planning to use the wedding as a deadline.””

Helen nodded.

“That's what it appears to suggest.””

I sat back.

“What happens now?””

“We're challenging the application. But I want to establish whether any other documents have been submitted.””

She turned on her computer.

“There's another reason I asked you to come in.””

A video file appeared on the screen.

“What is that?””

“Security footage from your property.””

I stared at her.

“My property?””

Helen explained that the lender had attached photographs and supporting material to its application. One image showed a meeting allegedly taking place at my house.

The date was marked.

October 3.

I looked at the screen.

It was my living room.

Robert's chair was visible beside the window.

Daniel was sitting on the sofa.

Richard stood near the coffee table.

And I was nowhere in the picture.

“That's the afternoon Daniel borrowed my financial folder,” I whispered.

Helen nodded.

“Do you remember the conversation?””

“Not everything. He told me he needed documents for a mortgage application.””

“Did you give him permission to copy them?””

“I gave him the folder to look through. I didn't authorize any property transaction.””

Helen paused the footage.

“There's something else.””

She enlarged the image.

A second person was visible near the hallway.

Tiffany.

She was holding a phone.

I leaned closer.

“She was there?””

Helen nodded.

“According to the footage, she entered the room about twenty minutes after Daniel arrived.””

I remembered that day.

Daniel had told me Tiffany was waiting outside because she had an appointment.

Apparently, that wasn't true.

“Can we hear the recording?””

Helen opened another file.

The audio began with the sound of my front door closing.

Then Daniel's voice.

“Mom, I just need the property folder.””

My recorded voice replied, “Which one?””

“The one Dad kept in his study.””

“Are you applying for a mortgage?””

“Something like that.””

I heard myself laugh.

“Well, don't borrow more than you can afford.””

Daniel replied, “I won't.””

The recording continued.

A few minutes later, another voice entered.

Tiffany.

“Did you get it?””

Daniel answered, “Most of it.””

“Did she sign?””

“No. But I have the sample.””

My blood ran cold.

Helen paused the audio.

“Margaret, do you recognize those voices?””

“Yes.””

“Do you want to continue?””

I nodded.

She pressed play.

Tiffany's voice became clearer.

“Dad said we need the signature before the bank meeting.””

Daniel replied, “I know. I'll scan it tonight.””

“And the deed?””

“It's in the folder.””

“What if she notices?””

Daniel gave a short laugh.

“She never checks anything. She trusts me.””

I covered my mouth.

The recording continued.

Tiffany said, “Good. Once the loan goes through, we can finally stop depending on her.””

Daniel replied, “Just don't tell Mom about the development company until everything is approved.””

Then came a sentence that made the room feel unbearably cold.

“After the wedding, she'll have no choice.””

The audio ended.

I sat motionless.

For several seconds, I couldn't even look at Helen.

My son had been sitting in my home, holding documents I had entrusted to him, discussing how to use my signature without my permission.

And he had done it while I was downstairs making coffee.

Helen placed a glass of water beside me.

“Margaret?””

I picked it up with trembling fingers.

“Is this enough to prove what happened?””

“It's important evidence. We'll need to preserve the original recording and establish its chain of custody. But it supports your account and contradicts the claim that you approved the arrangement.””

I took a sip.

“Can we give it to the authorities?””

“Yes. I recommend that we do so through the proper channels.””

I looked at the screen again.

“There's something I don't understand.””

“What?””

“If Daniel knew I hadn't signed anything, why did he keep going?””

Helen folded her hands.

“People sometimes convince themselves that a future benefit justifies an improper action. But we don't need to understand his motivation to protect your property.””

I nodded.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Tiffany.

*Tiffany: We need to talk. This situation is getting out of control.*

Another message followed.

*Tiffany: I'm pregnant, Margaret. I would have thought you'd be happy to be a grandmother instead of making our lives miserable.*

I stared at the screen.

Helen glanced at me.

“Is everything okay?””

I showed her the messages.

She read them carefully.

“Don't respond emotionally.””

I typed a short message.

*Margaret: I wish you a healthy pregnancy. That does not change my decision regarding my property or the unauthorized documents. Please communicate through my attorney about those matters.*

I sent it.

The response came seconds later.

*Tiffany: You really want to do this to your own grandchild?*

I placed the phone on the desk.

Helen shook her head.

“That's an attempt to make you feel responsible for their choices.””

I nodded.

But the mention of my grandchild still hurt.

I had imagined becoming a grandmother for years.

I had pictured tiny shoes beside my front door, birthday cakes, school photographs, and little hands holding mine.

I had never imagined that the announcement would arrive as part of a financial argument.

After the meeting, Helen accompanied me to the property office.

We filed a formal objection and requested that no transaction involving the land proceed without direct verification of my identity and consent.

The officer handling the case reviewed our documents.

“Mrs. Bennett, the application is now flagged for additional review.””

“Does that protect my ownership?””

“It prevents the pending transaction from being processed automatically. Any further action will require additional verification.””

I thanked him.

As we walked outside, Helen touched my arm.

“You've done the right thing.””

I nodded.

Then I noticed a black SUV parked across the street.

Richard was sitting behind the wheel.

He was watching us.

When our eyes met, he started the engine.

Helen followed my gaze.

“Is that him?””

“Yes.””

“Don't approach him.””

We got into her car.

As she drove away, my phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered.

“Hello?””

“Mom, what have you done?””

His voice sounded different.

Angrier.

“I've protected my property.””

“You gave the recording to a lawyer?””

I froze.

“How do you know about the recording?””

He didn't answer.

“Daniel, how do you know?””

“Tiffany says you're trying to get us arrested.””

“I haven't accused you of anything you didn't say yourself.””

“That recording was private!””

“It was recorded in my own home.””

“You can't use conversations against your own son!””

I stared out the window.

“Then you shouldn't have used my home to plan something you knew I wouldn't approve.””

He lowered his voice.

“Mom, we can still fix this.””

“How?””

“Withdraw the objection. Let the loan proceed. I'll make sure you get your money back.””

I almost laughed.

“My money back?””

“Yes.””

“You haven't even borrowed the money yet, Daniel.””

“We have investors waiting.””

“And what happens to my land?””

“Nothing bad will happen.””

“Then why do you need me to withdraw the objection?””

He went quiet.

I ended the call.

A few minutes later, Helen's phone rang.

She answered through the car speaker.

“Hello?””

A man's voice came through.

“This is Officer James from the financial investigations unit. We're reviewing the property application submitted by Hayes Development Partners.””

Helen introduced herself and explained that she represented me.

The officer asked whether we could come in for an interview.

“We can,” Helen replied.

Then he said something that made me sit upright.

“We've discovered another application connected to the same company.””

Helen frowned.

“Another property?””

“No. A credit facility.””

“For whom?””

There was a brief pause.

“Daniel Bennett and Tiffany Hayes.””

Helen looked at me.

The officer continued.

“The application lists Mrs. Bennett as a guarantor.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“I never agreed to guarantee anything.””

Helen immediately said, “We understand. We'll bring all relevant documentation.””

The officer added one final detail.

“The application includes a scanned copy of Mrs. Bennett's identification and bank information.””

My hands began to shake.

I had changed my banking passwords.

But apparently, that wasn't enough.

Because Daniel and Tiffany hadn't just used my signature.

May you like

They had used my identity to support their entire financial future.

And when I thought about the wedding, the champagne, and the extra $2,000, I suddenly wondered how much money they had already tried to obtain in my name.
