Chapter 14: The Brother Who Knew Too Much
Thomas arrived at my house that evening.
I had asked him to come because I wanted answers before the next meeting with Helen.
He walked into the kitchen, took one look at my face, and stopped.
“What happened?””
I placed the printed message on the table.
He read it.
His jaw tightened.
“Who sent this?””
“I don't know.””
He sat down slowly.
“Margaret, I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Robert and I had a falling-out long before the trust was created.””
“I know you argued about Daniel.””
“That was part of it. But there was something else.””
He looked toward the window.
“Years ago, Robert asked me to help him investigate Richard Hayes. I was working with a local property consultancy at the time. We had access to development proposals and acquisition records.””
I waited.
“Richard was buying options on land from elderly owners. He would offer them a small payment to secure the right to purchase their property later. Some of those agreements contained clauses that gave his companies far more control than the owners understood.””
“Like the agreement he brought me?””
Thomas nodded.
“Robert believed Richard was using the same method repeatedly.””
“Why didn't you go to the authorities?””
“We tried to gather evidence. But I made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
Thomas looked down.
“I accepted money from a company connected to Richard.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“Not to sell the land. Not to betray Robert. I thought I was being paid for consulting work. But when Robert found out, he believed I'd helped Richard obtain confidential information.””
“Had you?””
Thomas closed his eyes.
“I had given them a copy of a preliminary property map. I didn't know it contained information about the water source.””
I stood.
“Thomas.””
“I know.””
“Do you understand what that could have done?””
“Yes.””
“Robert trusted you.””
“I know that too.””
Thomas's voice cracked.
“He told me I had made it possible for Richard to target our family property. I tried to explain, but he wouldn't listen. We stopped speaking.””
I sat down again.
“Why did Robert put you back into the trust?””
Thomas looked surprised.
“You've seen the amendment?””
“Yes.””
He nodded slowly.
“Because I went back to him.””
“When?””
“About two months before he died. I gave him everything I had found about Richard. The payment records, the acquisition files, the emails. I also told him I had been wrong.””
“Did he forgive you?””
Thomas swallowed.
“He said forgiveness wasn't the same as trust. But he believed I could still do the right thing.””
I looked at the message again.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I was ashamed.””
I leaned back.
“I'm beginning to think everyone in this family has been keeping secrets and expecting me to live with the consequences.””
Thomas nodded.
“You have every right to be angry.””
I studied his face.
“Did you know Richard wanted the land because of the water source?””
“I suspected it.””
“And Daniel?””
Thomas hesitated.
“I think Daniel knew enough to understand the value. I don't know when he learned the full details.””
I pressed my fingers against my forehead.
“Why would Richard offer me one million dollars when the land might be worth five?””
“Because one million dollars would be cheap if he could obtain the development rights and control the water access.””
I thought about the fifteen-year agreement.
The loan.
The personal guarantee.
The forged signature.
Every piece had been designed to get the land under Richard's control.
Then Thomas said, “There's something else.””
I looked up.
“Of course there is.””
He reached into his jacket and placed a small flash drive on the table.
“Robert gave me this before he died.””
I stared at it.
“What is it?””
“Copies of the original acquisition records. He told me to keep them somewhere safe.””
“Why didn't you give them to Helen?””
“Because I didn't know whether they were still useful.””
I picked up the drive.
“What's on it?””
“Emails, scanned agreements, and a recording.””
My heart began beating faster.
“A recording of whom?””
“Richard.””
I looked at him.
“Talking about what?””
Thomas hesitated.
“About getting control of the land.””
I called Helen immediately.
She told us not to open the files or alter the drive before it could be preserved properly.
The next morning, we met at her office with Officer Miller.
He arranged for the flash drive to be documented and copied for examination.
A technician reviewed the contents.
There were dozens of files.
Some were old correspondence between Richard's company and local landowners.
Others contained draft contracts and payment schedules.
Then the technician opened an audio file.
A man's voice filled the room.
Richard Hayes.
“We don't need Bennett to understand the entire arrangement. We need his son to understand that the money is already waiting.””
Another voice replied.
“What if the mother refuses?””
Richard laughed.
“She won't refuse forever. She has a wedding to pay for, a son to please, and no idea what the property is worth.””
I felt my face grow hot.
The recording continued.
“What about the trust?””
Richard's voice became quieter.
“That's why we need the original document. Once we have the amendment, we can determine how to neutralize it.””
Officer Miller paused the recording.
Helen looked at me.
“Did you hear that?””
I nodded.
Richard had known about the amendment.
The technician continued.
A third voice entered the recording.
Daniel.
“Dad, she won't sign if she thinks we're taking the land.””
Richard replied, “Then don't tell her the full value. Let her believe she's receiving a generous offer.””
Daniel hesitated.
“And if she finds out?””
“By then, the financing will already be arranged.””
I covered my mouth.
Officer Miller stopped the recording.
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
Then he said, “This is significant. We'll need to verify the recording's origin and chain of custody, but it may support the existing investigation.””
I looked at the screen.
My son had known.
He had sat at my kitchen table, told me about his unborn daughter, and asked me to trust him.
All while helping Richard hide the real value of my property.
Helen closed the folder.
“Margaret, I need you to prepare yourself. If this evidence is authenticated, Daniel may face serious consequences.””
I nodded.
“I understand.””
Officer Miller asked Thomas about the recording.
Thomas explained that Robert had made it during a meeting with Richard and Daniel. He believed Robert had kept it because he feared the men would later deny what had been discussed.
Then the technician opened another file.
A scanned email dated four days before Robert's death.
It was addressed to Richard.
The subject line read:
*Final Warning — Bennett Property*
The message was brief.
You have no permission to approach my wife or son regarding the land. Any further attempt to obtain control of the property will be treated as an attempt to defeat the trust.
The email had been sent from Robert's account.
Richard's response was even shorter.
You won't be around forever, Robert.
I stared at the words.
My hands went cold.
Officer Miller leaned toward the screen.
“Do we have the date?””
The technician confirmed it.
Four days before Robert died.
Helen looked at me.
“Margaret, did Robert ever tell you about a confrontation with Richard?””
“No.””
“Did he seem frightened during those final days?””
I remembered the locked study.
The late-night walks.
The way he sometimes watched the road from the front window.
“Yes,” I whispered.
Officer Miller asked Thomas whether he knew what happened after that email.
Thomas shook his head.
“No. Robert stopped answering my calls.””
I looked at the message again.
You won't be around forever, Robert.
For seven years, I had believed my husband had simply become ill and died after a difficult winter.
Now I was beginning to wonder whether Richard had known something about those final weeks that none of us had ever been told.
And before we could discuss it further, Officer Miller's phone rang.
He listened for a moment, then looked at me.
“Mrs. Bennett, we've received a report from the bank.””
“What report?””
“The company connected to your forged loan application has attempted to access another account.””
“What account?””
He looked down at his notes.
“Your late husband's estate reserve account.””
I felt the room tilt.
“That account was closed years ago.””
“Apparently, someone has submitted documents claiming the account was transferred into a new business structure.””
Helen stood.
“Who submitted them?””
May you like
Officer Miller looked directly at me.
“Daniel Bennett.””
