Chapter 10: The Secret Robert Took to His Grave

I sat at my kitchen table for nearly twenty minutes after Patricia hung up.

The original trust agreement.

Robert had left something behind that Daniel and Richard believed belonged to them.

And apparently, my sister-in-law knew exactly what it was.

I called Helen.

She answered while I was still looking at the spreadsheet.

“Margaret?””

“Patricia Bennett just called me.””

Helen immediately became attentive.

“What did she say?””

I explained everything, including the $75,000 payment and her reference to Robert's trust agreement.

Helen was silent for a moment.

“Did she explain where the document is?””

“No. She said she would contact me again.””

“Don't approach Daniel or Richard about it. And don't agree to meet Patricia without telling me.””

“Why would she be involved?””

“I don't know yet. But if Robert established a trust, we need to locate the original documents.””

I looked toward his study.

“I've already searched the safe.””

“Did you find anything mentioning a trust?””

“Only the letter he left me.””

“Bring it to my office tomorrow. I'll review it.””

After ending the call, I walked upstairs.

Robert's study was dark except for the small lamp beside his chair.

I switched it on and opened the safe again.

This time, I searched every folder.

Property records.

Insurance policies.

Investment statements.

Old tax returns.

Then I found a small black notebook tucked beneath a stack of photographs.

It was Robert's handwriting.

The first few pages contained notes about the property, maintenance costs, and conversations with his brother.

Further inside, I found a heading.

*BENNETT FAMILY LAND TRUST.*

My heartbeat quickened.

I turned the page.

There was a list of names.

Robert Bennett.

Margaret Bennett.

Thomas Bennett.

Patricia Bennett.

And Daniel Bennett.

Beside Daniel's name, Robert had written:

Beneficiary only. No authority to borrow against, sell, transfer, or pledge the land during Margaret's lifetime.

I read the sentence twice.

Then I found another entry.

Primary trustee: Margaret Bennett.

Below it was a reference to an attorney named Edward Lawson.

I didn't recognize the name.

I took photographs of every page and sent them to Helen.

A few minutes later, she called.

“Margaret, where did you find this?””

“In Robert's safe.””

“Don't remove the notebook from the house until we discuss it. But this is significant.””

“Does it mean Daniel can't touch the land?””

“It suggests Robert may have established protections around the property. We need the actual trust instrument and the relevant registration records before reaching a conclusion.””

I sat in Robert's chair.

“Why didn't he tell me?””

“Perhaps he intended to explain it later. Or perhaps he believed the original documents were already in your possession.””

I looked at the notebook.

“Who is Edward Lawson?””

Helen searched her records.

“I'll investigate. Don't contact him until we verify his connection.””

The next morning, Patricia called again.

This time, I answered immediately.

“Patricia, I need an explanation.””

“I know.””

“Why is your company receiving seventy-five thousand dollars?””

“Because Richard promised me that money in exchange for helping him locate Robert's trust agreement.””

I stared at the wall.

“You agreed to help him?””

“I did initially.””

“Why?””

She sighed.

“Because I thought the trust was invalid. Richard told me Robert had changed everything before he died, and that Daniel was entitled to the land.””

“Did you believe him?””

“I wanted to.””

I felt anger rising.

“You knew Robert better than that.””

“I know. And that's why I stopped.””

“What changed?””

Patricia was quiet for several seconds.

“Three weeks ago, Richard showed me a copy of a document that supposedly gave Daniel control of the land.””

“The forged authorization?””

“Yes. I recognized the wording. It wasn't Robert's.””

“Then why didn't you contact me?””

“Because I was afraid.””

I closed my eyes.

“Of Richard?””

“Of what he knows.””

I sat straighter.

“What does he know?””

Patricia lowered her voice.

“Margaret, Robert discovered something about Richard's business years ago. Something involving land acquisitions and forged signatures.””

I thought of Robert's letter.

The warning about Thomas.

The arguments.

The unexplained distance between the brothers.

“Did Robert investigate Richard?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Richard approached Robert about buying the family land. Robert refused. Then he discovered that several neighboring property owners had signed agreements they didn't fully understand.””

I remembered the property Robert had sold to a farmer years earlier.

He had once mentioned a dispute involving a neighboring development.

“Was Richard involved?””

“I believe so.””

I felt a chill.

“Patricia, why are you telling me this now?””

“Because I found a letter from Robert. He sent it to me shortly before he died.””

“What letter?””

“He said if anyone ever tried to obtain the land through Daniel, I should contact you and give you the original trust agreement.””

My breath caught.

“You have the original?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“Somewhere safe.””

I almost shouted.

“Patricia, I've been sitting here wondering whether someone is going to take my home and my land. You have the document that could protect me, and you've kept it for seven years?””

“I know. I'm sorry.””

“Then bring it to me.””

“I can't.””

“Why not?””

“Richard has been watching my house.””

I stood.

“What?””

“His people have contacted me twice. They know I have something Robert left behind.””

I lowered my voice.

“Then where are you?””

“I'm staying with a friend. I can't tell you over the phone.””

I looked at the clock.

“Meet me at Helen's office.””

Patricia hesitated.

“Not yet. I need to tell you one more thing.””

“What?””

“The seventy-five thousand dollars isn't the only payment Richard promised.””

I gripped the phone.

“How much more?””

“Two hundred thousand.””

“For what?””

“For access to the original trust agreement and a declaration supporting Daniel's claim.””

I felt sick.

“And you agreed?””

“I was desperate. I thought I could use the money to pay off some debts. But after I saw the documents Richard was preparing, I realized what I was helping them do.””

I took a breath.

“Patricia, I need the truth.””

“I'll tell you everything. But you must understand something first.””

“What?””

“Daniel knows about the trust.””

I stared at the notebook.

“He knows?””

“Yes. Robert told him about it before he died.””

My heart sank.

“Then why has he been trying to get control of the land?””

Patricia whispered, “Because Robert didn't leave him what he expected.””

The call ended.

I immediately contacted Helen.

She agreed to arrange a secure meeting with Patricia and requested that she preserve every document in her possession.

But before I could leave the house, another call came in.

Daniel.

I answered.

“Hello?””

“Mom, I need to ask you something.””

“What?””

“Have you spoken to Aunt Patricia?””

I froze.

“How do you know?””

He ignored the question.

“She called me last night. She said you're looking into Dad's trust.””

I glanced toward the study.

“Yes.””

Daniel's voice hardened.

“Mom, whatever she's telling you, don't believe it.””

“Why?””

“She's been unstable since Dad died.””

I felt a wave of anger.

“Your aunt has never been unstable.””

“She wants money.””

“From whom?””

“Everyone. She's always wanted something from the family.””

I stared at the notebook.

“Daniel, did your father tell you about the trust?””

Silence.

Then he said, “He told me there was something set aside for me.””

“What exactly?””

“I was supposed to inherit the land.””

“Not according to his written instructions.””

Daniel exhaled.

“Mom, Dad made promises.””

“Then show me the documents.””

“He told me verbally.””

“Then why did you submit a loan application using my signature?””

He went quiet.

Finally, he said, “Because you weren't going to let me have what was mine.””

I closed my eyes.

And for the first time, I realized Daniel didn't see himself as someone trying to take something from his mother.

He genuinely believed I was standing between him and an inheritance he deserved.

That belief was going to make him far more dangerous than I had imagined.
