Chapter 9: The Grandfather Who Wasn't Dead

The hospital locked down Maya's information before I got back.

No updates by phone.

No room number.

No visitor access without approval.

For the first time since this nightmare began, bureaucracy felt comforting.

My mother was standing outside Maya's room when I arrived.

"What's happening?""

"Someone called.""

"Who?""

I looked through the window.

Maya was watching television.

Alive.

Safe.

"Claire's father.""

My mother stared at me.

"He's dead.""

"Apparently not.""

I told her enough to understand the danger.

Her face changed when I mentioned Thomas.

"Your father hated that man.""

"You knew him?""

"Not well.""

"But you knew about the company.""

"Some.""

"Why didn't Dad ever tell me?""

She looked toward Maya.

"Because he didn't want you inheriting his war.""

That sentence stayed with me.

Maybe that was what every generation believed.

Hide the ugly thing.

Protect the children.

Seal the records.

Keep the secret.

Then the children grew up inside consequences they couldn't understand.

My father had hidden the truth from me.

Claire had hidden it from Maya.

Different reasons.

Same mistake.

I wasn't going to repeat it.

Not anymore.

Claire arrived two hours later with Evan.

I almost didn't recognize her.

No makeup.

Hair pulled back badly.

Same clothes she'd worn the previous day.

She stopped outside Maya's room.

"Can I see her?""

I didn't answer immediately.

Claire looked through the glass.

Her face crumpled.

"Please.""

"Maya decides.""

Claire nodded.

No argument.

That mattered.

I went inside.

"Hey.""

Maya looked up.

"Mom's here?""

"Yeah.""

She became quiet.

"Do I have to see her?""

"No.""

Relief.

Then guilt.

Children shouldn't feel guilty for feeling safe.

"Can I see her tomorrow?""

"Of course.""

I returned to the hallway.

"Not tonight.""

Claire nodded.

A tear slid down her face.

"Okay.""

No anger.

No accusation.

Just okay.

We sat in the family consultation room with Evan.

Claire placed a thick envelope on the table.

"The originals.""

Evan put on gloves before touching anything.

My father's handwriting was on the first page.

I recognized it instantly.

Richard Bennett had written a statement detailing Thomas Mercer's theft.

Dates.

Transfers.

Forged signatures.

Daniel's involvement.

Copies of correspondence.

Bank records.

Then a letter addressed to Claire.

Evan looked at me.

"Do you want to read it?""

Claire answered.

"I already have.""

I took it.

Claire,

If you are reading this, then you know the truth about your father.

I stopped.

The words felt like my father speaking from another lifetime.

I continued.

He wrote that Claire was not responsible for Thomas's actions.

That I wasn't responsible for his.

That the relationship between us should never become payment for debts created by older men.

Then one line broke me.

Marcus loves without suspicion. Do not punish him for that gift.

I put the letter down.

For years, I'd thought trust was strength.

Now it felt like negligence.

Claire was crying.

"Your father gave me that three months before our wedding.""

"You should've told me.""

"I know.""

"Why didn't you?""

"Because I was ashamed.""

"Of your father?""

"At first.""

"And later?""

"Of myself.""

She looked at me.

"I met you at that fundraiser because my father told me to.""

The confession still hurt even though Elaine had already told me.

"I was supposed to learn whether Richard still had records.""

"And you did.""

"Yes.""

"Then you stayed.""

"I fell in love with you.""

I looked away.

"That doesn't erase the beginning.""

"No.""

"And it doesn't erase what happened to Maya.""

Her face collapsed.

"No.""

That was the difference now.

She wasn't asking forgiveness.

Not yet.

Maybe she finally understood she hadn't earned the right.

Evan continued sorting the documents.

Then he stopped.

"There's a trust amendment.""

Claire nodded.

"Read the date.""

He did.

Six years ago.

Two weeks before my father died.

The amendment confirmed what Elaine had said.

Maya's twelfth birthday triggered a transfer of controlling interests.

But there was another clause.

One none of us had mentioned.

Evan read silently.

Then again.

"What?""

He looked at Claire.

"You knew about this?""

"No.""

He turned the page toward me.

The clause said that if fraudulent activity was discovered involving either parent before Maya turned eighteen, an independent fiduciary review would determine whether control should remain protected for Maya.

"That's good, isn't it?""

"Maybe.""

"What do you mean?""

"The review has already been initiated.""

My stomach tightened.

"By who?""

He pointed to a filing reference.

"Three weeks ago.""

The exact week Maya found Claire's papers.

"Daniel?""

"Possibly.""

"What happens during the review?""

"They examine both parents.""

Claire whispered, "Which means my forged signatures.""

"Yes.""

"So Daniel already has what he needs.""

Evan shook his head.

"Not necessarily. Fraud intended to harm the trust is different from fraud committed under manipulation or unrelated circumstances. Context matters.""

"She used Maya's education account.""

"That will matter too.""

Claire covered her face.

I didn't comfort her.

Not because I wanted her to suffer.

Because consequences needed room to exist.

Evan's phone rang.

He stepped outside.

When he returned, his expression was grim.

"We found Thomas.""

Claire stood.

"Where?""

"Not physically. Financially.""

"What does that mean?""

"Someone matching his identity has been receiving payments through a consulting company in Panama.""

"From Daniel?""

"From Hawthorne.""

My pulse quickened.

"Can you prove it's him?""

"Not yet.""

"Then what?""

"There's more.""

Of course.

"The company received a payment yesterday.""

"How much?""

"Two hundred fifty thousand.""

"For what?""

"No description.""

"Where did it go?""

"Most was transferred again this morning.""

"To who?""

Evan turned the laptop.

A domestic account.

The receiving name made Claire gasp.

Maya Bennett Custodial Trust.

I stared.

"Someone put money into Maya's trust?""

"No," Evan said.

"Someone used an account named like Maya's trust.""

"Fake?""

"Almost certainly.""

"Why?""

"To make it look like Maya—or someone acting for her—received money from Thomas.""

Claire understood first.

"They're creating evidence.""

Evan nodded.

"Evidence that the beneficiary is connected to the person who committed the original fraud.""

"So they can challenge the trust.""

"Exactly.""

I stood.

"We need to stop the transfer.""

"I'm working on it.""

"Work faster.""

"I am.""

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Then something told me not to.

"Hello?""

Silence.

Then a man spoke.

"Marcus.""

Not Daniel.

Older.

Softer.

I had heard that voice years ago.

At Thanksgiving dinners.

At our wedding.

Before a coffin we'd buried convinced me the man was gone.

"Thomas.""

Claire went completely still.

The voice laughed quietly.

"So Elaine finally told you.""

I put the call on speaker.

Claire whispered, "Dad?""

Silence.

Then Thomas said her name.

"Claire.""

She covered her mouth.

"You were dead.""

"I'm sorry.""

"YOU WERE DEAD!""

Her scream made Evan close the consultation-room door.

"You let me bury you.""

"I had no choice.""

"You had a daughter!""

"I was protecting you.""

Claire laughed through tears.

"Everybody keeps saying that.""

I understood exactly what she meant.

Thomas continued.

"Marcus, Daniel has lied to all of you.""

"Where are you?""

"That doesn't matter.""

"It matters to me.""

"Daniel is trying to take what Richard intended for Maya.""

"And you're helping him.""

"No.""

"Then why is Hawthorne paying you?""

Silence.

Got him.

"I consulted for Daniel.""

"Yesterday?""

"Marcus—"

"Two hundred fifty thousand dollars.""

Claire stared at the phone.

Thomas stopped pretending.

"You've learned more than I expected.""

"Not enough.""

"Then listen carefully.""

We did.

"Daniel doesn't control Hawthorne anymore.""

Evan frowned.

"Who does?""

Thomas ignored him.

"Three months ago, Daniel was removed from operational control.""

"By who?""

"Adrian Cole.""

Evan and I exchanged a look.

That didn't fit.

"Adrian works for Daniel.""

"He used to.""

My mind raced.

"Then Adrian is behind the forged documents?""

"Some.""

"Which ones?""

"The ones involving your project.""

"And Claire?""

"She was useful.""

Claire recoiled as if he'd slapped her.

"You used me?""

Thomas didn't answer his daughter.

He kept talking to me.

"Adrian wants the trust assets absorbed into Hawthorne.""

"Why?""

"Because Hawthorne is failing.""

There it was.

Not revenge.

Not family honor.

Money.

Again.

"How bad?""

"Bad enough that eleven million dollars could keep certain people out of prison.""

Evan started typing furiously.

"Then why is Daniel involved?""

"Because Daniel is trying to stop him.""

I laughed.

"Daniel threatened me.""

"Did he?""

"He told me to stop digging.""

"No. Someone texted you that.""

I froze.

He was right.

I'd assumed.

"Daniel called me.""

"And told you Claire marrying you was a mistake.""

"Yes.""

Thomas sighed.

"Because he believes Claire's involvement gave Adrian access to your family.""

Claire whispered, "Oh God.""

Every certainty changed shape again.

"Where is Daniel now?"" I asked.

"I don't know.""

"Where is Adrian?""

"I don't know.""

"Then what do you know?""

Thomas became quiet.

"I know Adrian needs one final document.""

"What document?""

"Consent from the beneficiary's legal guardian.""

My eyes moved toward Maya's room.

"No.""

"He can't get it from me.""

"He doesn't need you.""

"Claire?""

"No.""

I looked at Claire.

She looked equally confused.

Thomas said, "Under Richard's original trust structure, there are three designated emergency guardians.""

"Who?""

"You.""

"Claire.""

"Yes.""

"And?""

Silence.

My mother.

I ran toward the door.

She wasn't outside Maya's room anymore.

"MOM?""

A nurse looked up.

"Mr. Bennett?""

"Where's my mother?""

"She left a few minutes ago.""

My heart stopped.

"With who?""

The nurse frowned.

"A gentleman.""

"What gentleman?""

"He said he was your attorney.""

Evan came running behind me.

"I'm his attorney.""

The nurse's face changed.

I grabbed my phone and called Mom.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Then a message arrived from her number.

Marcus, don't panic. Adrian says he can fix everything. I'm going with him to sign something that protects Maya.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Evan read over my shoulder.

"Call police.""

I already was.

Then another message arrived.

This one wasn't from Mom.

Unknown number.

A photograph loaded.

My mother sat in the passenger seat of a black SUV.

Adrian was driving.
