Calm

Chapter 8: The Person Claire Was Really Afraid Of

I didn't go alone.

I also didn't take Evan's car.

We called the police first.

That wasn't the dramatic decision.

It was the adult one.

The father decision.

The version of me from twenty-four hours earlier might have driven straight to that church looking for Daniel.

The man I was becoming understood something different.

Maya didn't need a reckless hero.

She needed a living father.

We explained the messages, the photograph, the forged financial documents, and Elaine's claim that Daniel had pressured her to sign paperwork.

The response wasn't as immediate as movies make it look.

Questions.

Jurisdictions.

Evidence.

Whether Claire had explicitly said she was being held.

She hadn't.

Whether there had been a direct threat.

Not exactly.

But the unknown messages helped.

So did Evan's legal vocabulary.

Eventually, officers from the county where the church was located agreed to perform a welfare check.

Evan and I drove separately and waited at a gas station three miles away.

Those twenty minutes felt longer than Maya's surgery.

Then my phone rang.

Claire.

I answered.

"Where are you?""

Her voice was shaking.

"Marcus, don't come.""

"I'm already nearby.""

"No.""

"Are you safe?""

"I don't know.""

"What does that mean?""

"Adrian is here.""

"I saw.""

"He says Daniel sent him.""

"Where's Daniel?""

"I don't know.""

"Is Adrian threatening you?""

"No.""

She paused.

"Not exactly.""

"Claire, stop protecting people.""

"I'm not.""

"You've been doing it for fourteen years.""

That silenced her.

Then she whispered, "Adrian says he wants to help.""

"Do you believe him?""

"I don't know.""

Neither did I.

"Where are the records?""

"With me.""

"Give them to the police.""

"I can't.""

"Why?""

"Because there's something in them about you.""

"What?""

"I need to explain first.""

"No more explanations before evidence. Give them to the police.""

She started crying.

"Marcus, please.""

I closed my eyes.

"What is in those records?""

"Your father knew Daniel would eventually come after the trust.""

"So?""

"He created a second protection.""

"What protection?""

"If there was evidence of fraud involving either parent, control wouldn't go to Daniel.""

"Then where?""

Silence.

"Claire?""

"To Maya.""

"She's twelve.""

"Not immediately. A professional trustee would manage it until she's twenty-five.""

That sounded reasonable.

Too reasonable.

"So why hide it?""

"Because the clause requires proof.""

"Proof of fraud?""

"Yes.""

"And you've committed fraud.""

Nothing.

My stomach turned.

"Claire.""

"I didn't understand.""

"What didn't you understand?""

"When Adrian first brought me the documents, he said they were internal authorizations. He said your signature could be added because we were married and the assets were joint.""

"That's nonsense.""

"I know that now.""

"You knew enough to hide them.""

"I knew enough to be afraid.""

That was different.

Not innocent.

But different.

"Did Adrian tell you about the trust?""

"No.""

"When did you learn?""

"Three weeks ago.""

The night Maya found the papers.

"How?""

"Daniel came to the house.""

Maya had said he was there.

"What did he want?""

"The original records.""

"Your father's records?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because they prove Richard was innocent.""

"And Thomas wasn't.""

"Yes.""

"That damages Daniel how?""

"Because Daniel knew.""

I frowned.

"Knew what?""

"That my father had forged Richard's signature.""

"Elaine said Daniel believed Thomas.""

"At first.""

"Then?""

"Daniel discovered the truth before the settlement.""

My skin prickled.

"And he still pursued Dad?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because by then Daniel had already used the dispute to acquire interests in the company.""

Evan, sitting beside me, leaned closer.

I put the call on speaker.

Claire continued.

"Daniel wasn't trying to defend my father. He was trying to take both men down.""

"Why?""

"Control.""

Simple.

Ugly.

Believable.

"Adrian works for him?""

"Yes.""

"Since when?""

"I don't know.""

"Did Adrian forge the documents?""

"I think so.""

"You think?""

"He brought me forms. I signed some. He told me where to sign your name on others.""

I shut my eyes.

"You signed my name knowingly.""

"Yes.""

Finally.

No excuse.

No softened language.

Just yes.

It hurt more than every justification she'd offered.

"Why?""

"Because Adrian showed me documents saying your project was about to collapse. He said we'd lose the house. He said you'd be investigated.""

"And you believed him.""

"I panicked.""

"You could have told me.""

"I know.""

"You could have trusted me.""

"I know.""

"You could have protected Maya instead of protecting a secret.""

Claire began sobbing.

"I know.""

I couldn't comfort her.

Not yet.

Maybe never.

"Why did you stop Maya from calling me?""

"I was afraid she'd tell you about Daniel.""

There it was.

The unforgivable center.

Not because Claire wanted Maya hurt.

Because she prioritized secrecy while Maya was hurting.

"She could've died.""

"I know.""

"Do you?""

"Yes.""

Her voice cracked.

"I will live with that for the rest of my life.""

Before I could answer, someone spoke near her.

A man's voice.

Adrian.

"Claire, give me the phone.""

"No.""

"Give it to me.""

"Stay back.""

I stood.

"Claire?""

A door slammed.

Elaine shouted.

Then Adrian came onto the line.

"Marcus.""

"Don't touch them.""

"I'm not hurting anyone.""

"Then walk outside with your hands visible. Police are coming.""

Silence.

"You called police?""

"Yes.""

Adrian swore.

Then something happened that I didn't expect.

He laughed.

Quietly.

"Good.""

I looked at Evan.

"Why is that good?""

"Because I've been trying to get Claire to do that for two days.""

"What?""

"I'm not the one you need to fear.""

"That's convenient.""

"I know.""

"Then why were you at my house?""

"To get Claire away from Daniel.""

"You helped forge my signature.""

"I processed documents Claire brought me.""

"She says you told her to sign my name.""

Silence.

Then:

"She's lying.""

I heard Claire scream, "No, I'm not!""

Adrian lowered his voice.

"Marcus, ask your wife who introduced us.""

"Daniel?""

"No.""

I waited.

"Elaine.""

I looked at the phone.

"Why would Elaine introduce you?""

"Because she wanted someone inside Hawthorne's financing network.""

My head started hurting.

"You're telling me Elaine recruited you?""

"Yes.""

"To do what?""

"Find out what Daniel was planning.""

Claire shouted in the background, "Mom?""

Apparently that was news to her too.

Then Elaine's voice came through.

"He's telling the truth.""

Everything shifted again.

"Elaine?""

"I asked Adrian for help.""

"When?""

"Eight months ago.""

"Why didn't you tell Claire?""

"Because I didn't know whether Claire would choose her marriage or her father.""

"Her father is dead.""

Elaine's voice became strange.

"No, Marcus.""

The world stopped.

"What?""

Evan stared at me.

Claire said, "Mom, what are you talking about?""

Elaine began crying.

"My husband didn't die eleven years ago.""

I couldn't process it.

Claire couldn't either.

I heard her say, "Stop.""

"Claire—"

"Stop.""

"Your father staged his death.""

"No.""

"He was facing federal investigation.""

"No.""

"He left.""

"NO!""

Claire's scream echoed through the phone.

I stood frozen.

Thomas Mercer.

The dead man whose crimes had shaped our lives.

Wasn't dead.

"Where is he?"" I asked.

Elaine didn't answer.

"Elaine.""

"I don't know.""

"You expect me to believe that?""

"I haven't seen him in years.""

"Does Daniel know?""

"Yes.""

"Does Adrian?""

"No.""

Adrian swore again.

Outside the gas station, two county sheriff's vehicles raced past us.

Toward the church.

"Marcus," Elaine said urgently, "Daniel isn't trying to take the trust for himself.""

"What?""

"He wants it for Thomas.""

The pieces rearranged.

Not inheritance.

Restoration.

Thomas had lost his stake after framing my father.

If Maya's trust could be compromised—

"Daniel wants to give the company back to his brother.""

"Yes.""

A loud knock came through the phone.

"County Sheriff's Office!""

Adrian said, "Everyone stay where you are.""

The call disconnected.

Evan and I waited.

Ten minutes.

Fifteen.

Then an officer called and confirmed Claire and Elaine were safe.

Adrian had remained voluntarily.

Nobody was arrested immediately.

But statements were being taken.

I should have felt relief.

Instead, my phone buzzed.

A hospital number.

I answered.

"Mr. Bennett?""

My heart dropped.

"Yes.""

"This is Dr. Brooks.""

I stood.

"Is Maya okay?""

"She's stable.""

I breathed.

"But someone attempted to access her medical information.""

"What?""

"A caller identified himself as her grandfather.""

My blood went cold.

"Both her grandfathers are dead.""

There was a pause.

"That's why we're calling.""

I looked at Evan.

"Did he give a name?""

"Yes.""

May you like

"What name?""

"Thomas Mercer.""
