Chapter 7: The Truth Our Fathers Buried

For several seconds after Daniel hung up, I kept the phone against my ear.
Not because I expected him to come back.
Because my mind refused to accept what he'd said.
Your wife is trying to correct a mistake she made fourteen years ago.
Marrying you.
Fourteen years.
Claire and I had been married fourteen years.
That couldn't be a coincidence.
I called her immediately.
Straight to voicemail.
Again.
Nothing.
Then I texted.
WHERE ARE YOU?
No response.
IS ELAINE REALLY WITH YOU?
Nothing.
I looked through the window of Maya's room.
She was asleep.
My mother sat beside her reading a book, one hand resting near Maya's blanket.
For the first time all night, my daughter looked peaceful.
I couldn't bring Daniel's poison into that room.
So I went downstairs.
Evan was already on his way.
He arrived twenty minutes later carrying a laptop and the expression of a man who had found something he wished he hadn't.
We sat in an empty family consultation room.
"Tell me exactly what Daniel said.""
I did.
Evan didn't react until I repeated the part about fourteen years.
Then he leaned back.
"How did you meet Claire?""
"At a fundraiser.""
"What kind?""
"Children's hospital benefit.""
"Who invited you?""
The question seemed irrelevant.
"My boss at the time.""
"Name?""
"Harold Greene.""
Evan typed.
"What?""
"Give me a minute.""
I watched him search.
Then he turned the laptop.
Harold Greene had served on the advisory board of a real-estate trust.
One of its former directors was Thomas Mercer.
Claire's father.
My stomach tightened.
"So our meeting wasn't random?""
"I didn't say that.""
"You didn't have to.""
I remembered that night.
Claire in a dark green dress.
Me standing near the bar because I hated formal events.
She'd made a joke about the silent-auction painting looking like "a storm cloud having a nervous breakdown.""
I'd laughed.
We talked for two hours.
I asked for her number.
She hadn't chased me.
Hadn't manipulated me.
At least that's what I'd believed.
"What are you thinking?"" Evan asked.
"That Daniel wants me questioning my entire marriage.""
"Then don't do his work for him.""
"What if he's right?""
"About what?""
"That marrying me was some kind of plan.""
Evan closed the laptop.
"You have fourteen years of life with Claire. One sentence from Daniel doesn't rewrite all of it.""
"No. Forged signatures help.""
He couldn't argue with that.
My phone rang.
Elaine.
I answered immediately.
"Elaine?""
"Marcus.""
Her voice sounded exhausted.
"Are you safe?""
A pause.
"Yes.""
"Where are you?""
"With Claire.""
"Where?""
"I can't tell you yet.""
"Why?""
"Because Daniel has people watching the house.""
I looked at Evan.
He leaned closer.
"Is Daniel with you?""
"No.""
"Was he the man who picked you up yesterday?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"He wanted me to sign something.""
"The retirement-home receptionist said you refused.""
"I did.""
"What was it?""
Elaine started crying.
Quietly.
"Marcus, I should've told you years ago.""
"Told me what?""
"About your father.""
My grip tightened.
"Did he steal from Thomas?""
"No.""
The answer came instantly.
"Then why was he accused?""
"Because my husband needed someone to blame.""
I closed my eyes.
Claire's text had been true.
"What did Thomas do?""
Elaine took a shaky breath.
"Richard and Thomas started Mercer-Bennett Properties when they were young. Your father handled acquisitions. Thomas handled finance.""
"Okay.""
"They did well for years.""
"Then?""
"Thomas began moving money.""
"Stealing?""
"At first he called it borrowing.""
Of course.
That's how theft often introduces itself.
Borrowing.
Temporary.
I'll put it back.
Words people use until the missing money becomes too large to hide.
Elaine continued.
"Daniel found out.""
"Then why did Daniel accuse my father?""
"He didn't at first.""
I frowned.
"What happened?""
"Thomas convinced him Richard was responsible.""
"How?""
"Records. Signatures. Transfers.""
My stomach dropped.
"Forged signatures?""
"Yes.""
The room seemed to shrink around me.
Twenty years ago, someone had forged my father's name.
Now someone was forging mine.
"Who forged them?""
"Thomas.""
"Claire's father.""
"Yes.""
"And Daniel believed him?""
"For a while.""
"What changed?""
"Richard found proof.""
My father's proof.
"Where is it?""
Elaine went quiet.
"That's what Daniel wanted me to sign away.""
I stood.
"Explain.""
"When the lawsuit was settled, certain records were placed in trust. Richard agreed not to pursue criminal charges if Thomas surrendered his ownership interest.""
"Why would Dad agree to that?""
"Because Thomas was Claire's father.""
That made no sense.
"So?""
Elaine hesitated.
"Because you and Claire had already met.""
I stopped breathing.
"No.""
"Marcus—"
"No. The company dissolved twenty years ago. Claire and I met fourteen years ago.""
"Publicly, yes.""
"Publicly?""
"Some disputes continued privately for years. Daniel kept reopening them. Your father and Thomas kept negotiating.""
"Why would my father protect a man because his daughter might someday marry me?""
"He didn't.""
"Then what are you saying?""
Elaine whispered, "You met Claire before the fundraiser.""
I laughed once.
"No, I didn't.""
"You did.""
"When?""
"You were children.""
I stared at the wall.
"You spent summers at the same lake property.""
Fragments moved through my mind.
A dock.
A tire swing.
A girl with beads in her hair.
A family my father stopped visiting after I was ten.
Memories without names.
"Claire knew?""
"She remembered you.""
I sat down.
I didn't.
That hurt in a strange way.
"Did she go to that fundraiser because she knew I'd be there?""
"Yes.""
The answer landed softly.
Which made it worse.
"Why?""
"Because Thomas asked her to.""
I couldn't speak.
Evan was watching my face.
"What did he want?""
"He wanted Claire to find out what Richard had kept.""
My throat tightened.
"So she married me to spy on my father?""
"No.""
"You just said—"
"She approached you because Thomas asked her to. She married you because she loved you.""
"How can you know that?""
"Because she tried to leave you after she learned why Thomas had sent her.""
My mind jumped backward fourteen years.
Three months after our engagement, Claire had ended things for six days.
She'd told me she was overwhelmed.
Then she'd come back crying and said she couldn't imagine her life without me.
I'd never understood it.
Until now.
"She found out?""
"Your father told her.""
"Told her what?""
"Everything.""
My eyes burned.
"Why didn't he tell me?""
"Because he wanted the feud to end.""
"And Claire?""
"She promised him it would.""
I stared at the table.
Fourteen years of silence.
A promise between my wife and my dead father.
"Then why is Daniel doing this now?""
"Because Thomas died.""
"Thomas died eleven years ago.""
"And Richard died six.""
"Still doesn't explain now.""
Elaine hesitated.
"Because Maya turned twelve.""
My heart stopped.
"What does Maya have to do with this?""
"Everything.""
I stood again.
"Elaine.""
"Richard changed the trust before he died.""
"What trust?""
"The assets Thomas surrendered.""
"Who owns them?""
"Technically, a family trust.""
"Whose family?""
"Both.""
I stared at Evan.
He was already writing.
Elaine continued.
"Richard didn't want you or Claire fighting over what happened. So he created conditions.""
"What conditions?""
"The controlling interest transfers when the first grandchild of both family lines reaches twelve.""
I couldn't process the sentence.
"Both family lines?""
"Maya.""
My daughter.
The child of Marcus Bennett and Claire Mercer.
The granddaughter connecting the two families.
"How much is it worth?""
Elaine didn't answer.
"How much?""
"More than the original company.""
"That means nothing.""
"Marcus...""
"Tell me.""
"Last valuation I saw was approximately eleven million dollars.""
I sat down.
Eleven million.
Maya was lying upstairs recovering from emergency surgery while adults had been moving millions around her name.
"When did Daniel find out?""
"He always knew.""
"Then why wait?""
"Because he believed he could challenge the trust once Maya turned twelve.""
"By forging my signature?""
"By making you look financially irresponsible.""
Everything clicked.
The shell company.
The personal guarantees.
The debt.
My daughter's college money.
If Daniel could bury me financially—
"What happens if I'm declared unfit to manage the trust?""
Elaine began crying again.
"Control passes to the alternate trustee.""
"Who?""
I already knew.
"Daniel.""
I closed my eyes.
This wasn't about my development.
That had been leverage.
It wasn't even primarily about Claire.
It was about Maya.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Claire.
One address.
Then:
COME ALONE.
I showed Evan.
"No.""
"It's Claire.""
"Exactly.""
"Elaine's with her.""
"Maybe.""
I called Claire.
She answered.
"Marcus.""
"Put your mother on.""
A moment later, Elaine spoke.
"It's me.""
"Are you okay?""
"Yes.""
I looked at Evan.
"Where are you?""
Elaine gave the same address.
An old church thirty minutes outside the city.
Claire came back on.
"Marcus, I need to give you something.""
"What?""
"The original records.""
"What records?""
"The ones your father gave me.""
My heart pounded.
"You've had them fourteen years?""
"Yes.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because your father made me promise.""
"He's dead, Claire.""
"I know.""
"Then why now?""
Her voice broke.
"Because Daniel knows I have them.""
I stood.
"Stay there.""
"Come alone.""
"I'm bringing Evan.""
"No.""
"Claire—"
"If Daniel sees his car, he'll know.""
"How would Daniel see anything?""
Silence.
"Claire?""
Then I heard a sound on her end.
A door opening.
Elaine said something sharply.
Claire whispered, "Oh God.""
The call disconnected.
I called back.
Nothing.
Then a text arrived.
Not from Claire.
Unknown number.
YOU WERE TOLD TO STOP DIGGING.
Attached was a photograph.
Claire and Elaine stood inside the old church.
May you like
Behind them, visible through a window, was a black SUV.
And beside it stood Adrian Cole.
