Calm

Chapter 7: The Friend Who Knew Too Much

The room felt smaller.

That was the only way I could describe it.

The walls hadn't moved.

The furniture hadn't changed.

The clock on the kitchen wall was still ticking like nothing had happened.

But everything was different.

Because Marcus was no longer just my best friend.

He was a question.

A question I had been too afraid to ask.

I stared at him.

"The night Emily died...""

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

"You were there?""

Marcus didn't answer.

That was enough.

I felt something inside me collapse.

Not because I believed he had hurt her.

Not yet.

But because the person I trusted most had been carrying a secret for years.

Years.

While I was grieving.

While I was raising Sophie alone.

While I was rebuilding my life.

He knew.

"Tell me everything.""

Marcus looked at my mother.

Then at me.

"I should have told you.""

"Yes.""

"I wanted to.""

"But you didn't.""

He looked down.

"No.""

I walked away from the table.

My hands were shaking.

"Why does everyone keep deciding what I can handle?""

Nobody answered.

"Why?""

My voice grew louder.

"My father decided.""

"My mother decided.""

"Lauren decided.""

"Now you?""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"I was scared.""

I turned.

"Of what?""

"Of losing you.""

I laughed quietly.

"You don't lose someone by telling them the truth.""

He looked at me.

"Sometimes you do.""

That hurt because it sounded like something I would have believed years ago.

Before everything changed.

Before secrets.

Before lies.

Before I realized the people who loved you could still destroy you.

"Tell me about Emily.""

Marcus swallowed.

"It was raining.""

I froze.

That detail.

I remembered.

Everyone remembered.

The rain.

The dark roads.

The call from the hospital.

Marcus continued.

"She called me around ten that night.""

"Why?""

"Because she was scared.""

I stared.

"Scared of what?""

"She said someone had broken into your house.""

My chest tightened.

"What?""

"She said things had been moved.""

I shook my head.

"Why didn't she tell me?""

"Because you were with Sophie.""

I looked away.

That sounded exactly like Emily.

She always protected everyone else first.

"What did she find?""

Marcus hesitated.

"She didn't tell me everything.""

"Stop saying that.""

"I swear.""

I stepped closer.

"You were the last person she talked to.""

He looked down.

"Yes.""

"What did she say?""

His eyes filled with regret.

"She said she finally understood why your father disappeared.""

The room went silent.

"Why?""

Marcus looked at me.

"Because someone inside the company was setting him up.""

"Robert?""

He nodded.

"But not only Robert.""

"Who else?""

Marcus looked toward my mother.

Then back at me.

"She said the person helping him was someone your father trusted.""

I felt cold.

"Who?""

Marcus shook his head.

"She never said.""

"Why?""

"Because she said she needed proof first.""

I walked back to the table.

The phone sat there.

The phone that had exposed everything.

"Where is the drive?""

Marcus's face changed.

I noticed.

A tiny reaction.

But I saw it.

"You know.""

"No.""

"You do.""

"Michael—"

"Where is it?""

His silence was answer enough.

My mother stood.

"Marcus.""

He looked at her.

"I thought you destroyed it.""

The sentence froze me.

"What?""

Marcus closed his eyes.

My mother looked horrified.

"What did you do?""

He whispered:

"I hid it.""

The room went completely quiet.

I stared at Marcus.

"You had the evidence.""

He nodded.

"For six years?""

"Yes.""

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"Where?""

"I moved it.""

"Where?""

"I can't tell you.""

I stepped forward.

"Are you serious?""

"I need to explain.""

"No.""

My voice was sharp.

"You don't get explanations until you answer questions.""

Marcus looked at me.

"Your father told me never to let anyone find it.""

"Anyone?""

"Anyone.""

"Including me?""

His face changed.

That was all I needed.

"Especially me.""

The words hit harder than I expected.

"Why?""

Marcus looked broken.

"Because your father believed you would go after them.""

"And?""

"He knew you wouldn't stop.""

I looked away.

Because he was right.

If someone had killed Emily...

If someone had destroyed my family...

I would have burned everything down trying to find them.

"Where is it?""

Marcus looked at the floor.

"Safe.""

"That's not an answer.""

"It's the only one I can give.""

I grabbed the edge of the table.

"You don't understand.""

Marcus looked at me.

"I understand more than anyone.""

"No, you don't.""

My voice cracked.

"You got to know the truth while I buried my wife.""

The words hit him.

He looked away.

"I know.""

"You got to know my father was alive while I told Sophie stories about a grandfather who was gone.""

"I know.""

"You got to protect everyone while I was trying to survive.""

Tears filled his eyes.

"I know.""

"Then tell me where it is.""

He stayed silent.

And that silence destroyed whatever trust was left.

An hour later, Marcus finally agreed to show me.

Not because I convinced him.

Because something changed.

My phone rang again.

This time, it wasn't an unknown number.

It was Lauren.

I almost didn't answer.

But I did.

"Where are you?""

Her voice was barely a whisper.

"Somewhere safe.""

"Are you alone?""

"Yes.""

"Michael, listen to me.""

I stayed quiet.

"I need to tell you something before it's too late.""

"What?""

A pause.

Then:

"I wasn't sent to hurt you.""

I looked away.

"That doesn't erase what you did.""

"I know.""

"You lied to me.""

"I know.""

"You used me.""

"I know.""

Her voice broke.

"But I never wanted Sophie to get hurt.""

I closed my eyes.

"Where is Daniel?""

Silence.

Then:

"He's not the biggest threat.""

"Who is?""

"I don't know.""

I almost hung up.

But then she said:

"I saw the person who gave him orders.""

I froze.

"Who?""

"Someone from your family.""

My grip tightened.

"Who?""

She whispered:

"Your uncle.""

I went still.

"My uncle died years ago.""

"No.""

"What?""

"He didn't.""

The world stopped again.

Not another impossible truth.

Not another person returning from the dead.

"Lauren.""

"I know how it sounds.""

"Because it's insane.""

"Yes.""

"Who else is alive?""

She didn't answer.

"Lauren.""

"My father's not the only person who faked a death.""

The line went silent.

I stared at the floor.

How many lies could one family survive?

"Why are you telling me this?""

Her voice became quiet.

"Because Daniel found out I switched sides.""

"What does that mean?""

"It means he knows I chose you.""

I didn't know what to say.

Then she whispered:

"Michael.""

"What?""

"Get Sophie away from everyone.""

My heart stopped.

"Why?""

"Because the person behind all of this knows exactly what matters to you.""

The call ended.

I looked up.

Marcus was watching me.

"What happened?""

I didn't answer immediately.

Then I said:

"She said we need to move Sophie.""

His expression changed.

Not surprise.

Fear.

And that bothered me.

"You believe her?""

I looked at him.

"I don't know.""

Then I noticed something.

Something small.

Something that shouldn't have mattered.

But it did.

Marcus was not asking about Lauren.

He was not asking about the threat.

He was not asking what happened.

He asked about Sophie.

"What?""

He looked confused.

"What?""

"Why did you ask about Sophie first?""

He froze.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

A tiny moment of panic.

"Michael.""

"No.""

I stepped back.

"Answer me.""

"I was worried.""

"Why?""

"Because she's a child.""

"Because she's my daughter?""

The silence came again.

Marcus looked away.

And suddenly I remembered something.

The wedding.

The aisle.

Sophie running toward me.

The phone.

The fear in her eyes.

She hadn't been afraid of Lauren.

Not completely.

She had been afraid of everyone.

Even people she loved.

I walked upstairs.

"Where are you going?""

I didn't answer.

I found Sophie sitting on the bed in the guest room.

She was holding a stuffed rabbit.

The same one she had slept with since she was three.

She looked up.

"Dad?""

I sat beside her.

"Sweetheart.""

"Are we leaving?""

The question shocked me.

"Why would you ask that?""

She shrugged.

"Because everyone leaves.""

My heart broke.

"No.""

I pulled her close.

"I'm not leaving.""

She leaned against me.

After a moment, she whispered:

"Dad?""

"Yeah?""

"I didn't tell you everything.""

I looked down.

"What do you mean?""

She played with the rabbit's ear.

"That night I heard Lauren talking...""

My body went still.

"There was someone else.""

"Who?""

"I don't know.""

"What did they sound like?""

She thought.

"Old.""

"Man or woman?""

"Man.""

I swallowed.

"What did he say?""

Sophie looked at me.

"He said...""

She paused.

"He said, 'The boy still doesn't know what his father did.''"

I felt my blood run cold.

"What boy?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know.""

I stared at the wall.

Then I asked the question I didn't want to ask.

"Sophie...""

"Yeah?""

"Did you recognize his voice?""

She nodded slowly.

My heart stopped.

"Whose voice?""

She whispered:

"Grandpa's.""

I closed my eyes.

Because I finally understood the one thing nobody had considered.

Maybe my father wasn't only hiding from someone.

Maybe he was hiding from what he had done.

May you like

And somewhere in the middle of all these lies...

was the truth about the man I spent my entire life believing was a hero.
