Chapter 3: The Secret My Father Took to His Grave

"I think your father may still be alive.""

The words didn't make sense.

Not emotionally.

Not logically.

Not in any universe where reality was supposed to work.

I stared at Lauren, waiting for her to take it back.

Waiting for her to laugh nervously and say she was exhausted, scared, confused.

Waiting for her to become the woman I knew again.

But she didn't.

She just stood there.

Terrified.

My mother sat down slowly.

Her hand covered her mouth.

"No...""

The sound that came from her wasn't disbelief.

It was pain.

A pain that told me she had been carrying something for years.

I turned toward her.

"You knew.""

She looked up.

Tears filled her eyes.

"I suspected.""

My chest tightened.

"You suspected my father was alive?""

She looked away.

"After the funeral, I received a letter.""

The room went silent.

"A letter from who?""

She hesitated.

"Your father.""

I felt the floor disappear beneath me.

Marcus stepped forward.

"Wait.""

Everyone looked at him.

"You're saying your father wrote her a letter after he died?""

My mother nodded.

"Two weeks after the funeral.""

I stared at her.

"And you didn't tell me?""

"I was going to.""

"When?""

Her silence answered for her.

"Mom.""

She broke down.

"I didn't know what to believe.""

I walked toward the window.

Outside, I could see the parking lot where guests were still gathering, whispering, trying to understand why a wedding had stopped halfway through.

They thought today was about a bride and groom.

They didn't know they were watching a family fall apart.

"What did the letter say?""

My mother wiped her tears.

"He said he was sorry.""

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

"My father disappears. We bury him. Then two weeks later he writes you a letter saying he's sorry?""

She nodded.

"He said he had to leave.""

"Leave?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

She looked at me.

"Because someone was trying to kill him.""

The words hit harder this time.

Because now they weren't coming from Lauren.

They were coming from my mother.

The woman who had protected my father his entire life.

I shook my head.

"No.""

My mother reached into her purse.

"I kept the letter.""

My eyes moved to the envelope she pulled out.

Old.

Yellowed.

Folded carefully.

Like it had been opened hundreds of times.

She placed it on the table.

I didn't touch it.

I couldn't.

It felt like touching a grave and finding the person inside still breathing.

"Why now?"" I whispered.

My mother looked at Lauren.

"Because I think she knows more than she told you.""

Lauren flinched.

"That's not fair.""

I looked at her.

"Fair?""

My voice rose.

"My daughter stood in front of 180 people and exposed secrets you were hiding.""

"I was trying to protect you.""

"From what?""

She didn't answer.

I pointed at the envelope.

"Did you know about this?""

Lauren swallowed.

"Yes.""

My stomach turned.

"How?""

She looked down.

"My father told me.""

I froze.

"Your father?""

She nodded.

"Robert.""

Daniel's father.

My father's former business partner.

The man whose name had appeared in my mother's story.

"Robert knew?""

"Yes.""

"How?""

Lauren took a shaky breath.

"Because Robert was there the night your father disappeared.""

Nobody moved.

I stared at her.

"What does that mean?""

"It means your father didn't have a heart attack.""

My hands curled into fists.

"Then what happened?""

Lauren looked toward Sophie.

My daughter was sitting quietly in the corner, listening to things no child should ever hear.

I immediately walked over and crouched beside her.

"Sweetheart.""

She looked at me.

"I need you to go with Grandma for a minute, okay?""

Her eyes widened.

"Are you mad at me?""

The question broke something inside me.

"No.""

I touched her cheek.

"Never.""

"But I ruined your wedding.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"You didn't ruin anything.""

She looked at Lauren.

"She was lying.""

I looked at my daughter.

"I know.""

The fact that I said it out loud shocked me.

Because an hour earlier, I would have defended Lauren against anyone.

Even my own family.

Now I couldn't.

My mother took Sophie's hand.

"I'll take her outside.""

Sophie stood.

Before leaving, she looked back.

"Dad?""

"Yeah?""

"Grandpa said you weren't supposed to trust anyone.""

My blood went cold.

"What?""

She looked confused.

"He said that in the video.""

I turned toward Lauren.

"What video?""

"The one I didn't watch.""

Everyone froze.

Sophie pointed at the phone.

"He said your name.""

I grabbed the phone.

"What exactly did he say?""

She frowned, trying to remember.

"He said...""

She closed her eyes.

"He said, 'My son cannot know the truth until he sees who stands beside him.''"

The room went completely silent.

I looked at Lauren.

She looked like she might collapse.

"Why would he say that?""

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew.

The question wasn't why my father was hiding.

The question was who he was warning me about.

After my mother left with Sophie, I finally opened the second video.

My hands were shaking.

I pressed play.

The screen was dark again.

A few seconds passed.

Then a voice.

"Michael.""

My heart stopped.

Nobody called me that except my father.

Not Mike.

Not Michael.

Only him.

The video shook slightly.

The person holding the camera was moving.

Then a man's face appeared.

Older.

Thinner.

With gray hair.

My knees almost gave out.

Because I knew that face.

Even after six years.

Even after a funeral.

Even after a grave.

My father was looking into the camera.

Alive.

My mouth opened.

No sound came out.

Marcus whispered:

"Oh my God.""

The video continued.

My father's eyes looked tired.

Older than they should have been.

But alive.

"If you're watching this, then something went wrong.""

He paused.

"I hoped you would never see this.""

I stepped closer to the phone.

My father looked directly into the camera.

"Michael, I'm sorry.""

I felt tears burn my eyes.

I hated him.

I missed him.

I wanted to scream at him.

All at once.

"I know you think I abandoned you.""

His voice cracked.

"I know you think I chose to leave.""

He looked away.

"But I did it because staying would have put you and your mother in danger.""

My breathing became heavier.

"Your father was never sick.""

The video froze for a second because my finger accidentally touched the screen.

I restarted it.

My father continued.

"The night everyone thought I died, I was supposed to meet someone.""

He looked around nervously.

"Someone who had proof.""

"Proof of what?"" I whispered.

The video continued.

"Proof that Robert was stealing from the company.""

My eyes moved toward Lauren.

She looked down.

My father continued.

"Robert wasn't working alone.""

A pause.

"He had help.""

The camera moved.

My father's face disappeared briefly.

Then returned.

"Michael, if Lauren is with you when you see this...""

Every muscle in my body froze.

Lauren's face went pale.

My father continued.

"Do not trust everything she tells you.""

The room felt colder.

I slowly looked at her.

"No.""

The word came from Lauren.

Not me.

She looked devastated.

"No.""

My father continued.

"I don't know if she knows the whole truth. I don't know if she was forced into this. But she is connected.""

The video ended.

Just like that.

No explanation.

No answers.

Only destruction.

I stood there staring at the black screen.

Nobody spoke.

Then Lauren whispered:

"I can explain.""

I looked at her.

"Can you?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

"Then explain.""

She took a deep breath.

"My father forced me to get close to you.""

The confession was so unexpected that I didn't react immediately.

"What?""

She started crying.

"I didn't plan to fall in love with you.""

I felt numb.

"You planned to?""

"No.""

She shook her head.

"At first, yes.""

My heart broke quietly.

Like glass cracking under pressure.

"I met you because of your father.""

I stared at her.

"How?""

"Your father had something.""

"What?""

"A drive.""

"What drive?""

"Something containing financial records, names, transactions.""

She looked at the phone.

"Evidence.""

I remembered my mother's words.

He left me evidence.

"Why me?""

"Because your father hid it somewhere only you could find.""

I laughed.

"That doesn't make sense.""

"He knew you.""

"What?""

"He knew you better than anyone.""

She wiped her tears.

"He knew you would never look for money. You would look for answers.""

I looked away.

"How long have you known?""

She hesitated.

"Since before we met.""

My chest tightened.

"How long?""

"Three years.""

Three years.

The entire relationship.

The entire time I thought I had found someone who loved me after losing Emily.

The entire time I thought Lauren chose me.

She had been searching.

"Did you ever love me?""

She didn't answer immediately.

That hurt more than any lie.

Finally, she whispered:

"Yes.""

I looked at her.

"After everything?""

"Yes.""

"How am I supposed to believe that?""

"You don't have to.""

The honesty surprised me.

She looked exhausted.

"I know what I did.""

"No, you don't.""

I pointed toward the church.

"My daughter thinks she had to save me from you.""

Lauren closed her eyes.

"I know.""

"She was seven years old and carrying this secret.""

"I know.""

"She thought nobody would believe her.""

Lauren started crying harder.

"I never wanted that.""

"Then why?""

She looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something other than fear.

Regret.

"Because Daniel found me.""

My face changed.

"Daniel?""

She nodded.

"He knew about the drive too.""

"What does he want?""

"To destroy it.""

"Why?""

"Because your father discovered what his family had done.""

The room went quiet.

I thought about the video.

The messages.

The money.

The man asking Lauren if "the little girl" would be a problem.

"Was Daniel the person in the video?""

Lauren looked terrified.

"No.""

"Then who?""

She didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

"Lauren.""

She whispered:

"Someone worse.""

"Who?""

She looked at the door.

Then at me.

Then she said the one name I never expected.

"The person who has been helping Daniel.""

My heart pounded.

"Who?""

Lauren's voice dropped.

"Your mother.""

I stared at her.

"No.""

She nodded slowly.

"Michael...""

"Don't.""

"Your mother knew your father was alive.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

"She helped him disappear.""

"No.""

"And she helped hide what he left behind.""

I backed away.

Because suddenly I didn't know who was protecting me.

And who was destroying me.

The woman who raised me.

The woman I loved.

The woman I planned to marry.

Everyone had secrets.

Everyone had lied.

Then my phone rang.

The screen showed an unknown number.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Only breathing.

Then a man's voice whispered:

"Michael.""

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

I had heard it five minutes ago.

On the video.

My father's voice.

May you like

"Don't trust anyone in that room.""

The call ended.
