Calm

Chapter 5: The Night Everything Changed

I stood there in the middle of the street, holding the paper in my hand, unable to move.

*ASK YOUR FATHER.*

Three simple words.

Three impossible words.

Because my father was dead.

At least, that was the story I had lived with for six years.

I looked down the empty road where the stranger had disappeared.

Nothing.

No footsteps.

No car driving away.

No explanation.

Just silence.

The kind of silence that comes after something breaks.

And something inside me had broken.

Because deep down, beneath all the anger and confusion, there was a part of me that had already started believing the impossible.

My father was alive.

And if he was alive...

Then everything I knew about the last six years was a lie.

"Michael!""

Marcus's voice pulled me back.

I turned.

He was standing outside my mother's house, looking worried.

"You okay?""

I looked at the paper.

Then at him.

"Someone was here.""

His face tightened.

"Who?""

"I don't know.""

I walked back toward the house.

My mother was standing in the doorway.

She looked older than she had ten minutes earlier.

Not physically.

Something deeper.

Like a person who had spent years carrying a secret and finally realized the weight was too heavy.

I held up the paper.

Her eyes immediately moved to the words.

And when she read them...

She started crying.

Not a surprised cry.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

"You know who wrote this.""

It wasn't a question.

My mother looked away.

"Mom.""

She closed her eyes.

"I hoped this day would never come.""

The sentence made my blood run cold.

"What day?""

"The day you started asking questions.""

I stepped inside.

"No more.""

My voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

"No more secrets. No more protecting me. No more telling me something is too complicated.""

She looked at me.

"I was trying to keep you safe.""

"Safe from what?""

She didn't answer.

I slammed the paper onto the table.

"Safe from my father?""

Her face changed.

"Michael.""

"Safe from Lauren?""

She looked down.

"Safe from Daniel?""

Nothing.

"Safe from yourself?""

My mother flinched.

That hurt more than if she had yelled.

Because it meant there was truth somewhere in that sentence.

Sophie stood quietly near Marcus.

She was watching everything.

I immediately softened.

I didn't want her carrying more.

"Sweetheart.""

She looked up.

"Can you go with Marcus for a few minutes?""

She nodded.

Before leaving, she looked at me.

"Don't let them lie again.""

The words came from a seven-year-old.

But they sounded like a warning.

After Sophie and Marcus left the room, I faced my mother.

"Tell me about Emily.""

Her expression changed instantly.

Like I had opened a door she had spent years locking.

"Why?""

"Because someone sent me a message telling me to ask about the night she died.""

My mother's face went pale.

"Who sent that?""

"I don't know.""

"Michael...""

"Tell me.""

She sat down slowly.

For several seconds, she just stared at the floor.

Then she whispered:

"Emily wasn't supposed to die that night.""

I felt my stomach drop.

"What does that mean?""

My mother looked up.

"She wasn't supposed to be driving.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"Your father asked her not to go.""

"Why?""

"Because he was scared.""

"Of what?""

She looked toward the window.

"Of someone following them.""

The room became colder.

I remembered that night.

The phone call.

The hospital.

The doctor telling me there was nothing they could do.

I remembered Emily's car.

The rain.

The broken glass.

I remembered thinking the world had ended.

But now my mother was telling me there was more.

"What happened?""

She took a shaky breath.

"Emily found something.""

"What?""

"I don't know exactly.""

I stared at her.

"You're lying.""

"No.""

"You always say that.""

She looked hurt.

"But I don't know everything.""

"What did she find?""

My mother hesitated.

Then she said:

"Documents.""

The same word again.

Documents.

Evidence.

Secrets.

"What kind of documents?""

"Financial records.""

I froze.

"My father?""

She nodded.

"Your father had been investigating Robert.""

Daniel's father.

The same man connected to Lauren.

"The company?""

"Yes.""

"And Emily found proof?""

"I think so.""

I walked away.

My mind was moving too fast.

My wife had died.

My father had disappeared.

Lauren had entered my life.

And somehow all three events were connected.

"No.""

I whispered it.

My mother looked at me.

"What?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

Because there was something I couldn't accept.

"Lauren knew.""

My mother didn't answer.

"She knew about Emily.""

Still silence.

"Mom.""

She looked at me.

"Yes.""

My heart sank.

"How?""

"Because Robert told her.""

I stared.

"Why would Robert tell Lauren?""

My mother looked terrified.

"Because Lauren wasn't just involved because of your father.""

I waited.

She whispered:

"She was involved because of Emily.""

I left my mother's house before she could say anything else.

I needed air.

I needed distance.

I needed something that didn't feel like my entire life was a carefully constructed lie.

Marcus found me sitting in his truck.

He didn't ask questions.

He just sat beside me.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then he said:

"You want to know what I think?""

I looked ahead.

"No.""

He nodded.

"Fair.""

A minute passed.

Then he continued anyway.

"I think your father made enemies.""

I didn't respond.

"I think he tried to fix something.""

Still nothing.

"And I think everyone around you has been making decisions because they thought they knew what was best for you.""

I looked at him.

"You too.""

He nodded.

"Yeah.""

The honesty surprised me.

"I hated keeping things from you.""

"Then why did you?""

"Because your father begged me.""

"Why?""

Marcus looked at me.

"Because he said if you knew the truth too early, you would go after the people responsible.""

I laughed quietly.

"He knew me.""

"Yeah.""

I looked down.

"I would have.""

"I know.""

Silence again.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Marcus looked at the screen.

"Answer it.""

I hesitated.

Then accepted.

"Hello?""

For a few seconds, nothing.

Then:

"Michael.""

My heart stopped.

"Who is this?""

A man's voice.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar.

"You're asking the wrong questions.""

I gripped the phone.

"Where are you?""

"Not important.""

"Are you my father?""

Silence.

Then:

"Did you watch the videos?""

My breathing changed.

"Answer me.""

Another pause.

Then:

"Yes.""

The world stopped.

My father.

Alive.

Talking to me.

Six years after I buried him.

Six years after I thought I lost him forever.

"Why?""

My voice cracked.

"Why did you let me think you were dead?""

His breathing became heavy.

"Because if you knew I was alive, you would have been killed.""

"By who?""

"Michael—"

"No.""

My voice became louder.

"You don't get to disappear and come back giving me warnings.""

"I know.""

"You don't get to let me bury you.""

"I know.""

"You don't get to let Mom suffer.""

Silence.

Then his voice changed.

"Your mother knows more than she told you.""

I closed my eyes.

"Everyone keeps saying that.""

"Because it's true.""

"Where are you?""

"I can't tell you.""

"Why?""

"Because they are watching.""

I looked around.

The street was empty.

"Who?""

"People who think the evidence is gone.""

"What evidence?""

"The drive.""

I remembered Lauren.

The papers.

The documents.

"Where is it?""

My father didn't answer.

Then he said:

"Emily had it.""

My heart stopped.

"Emily?""

"She found it before she died.""

I couldn't speak.

"Your wife was closer to the truth than anyone.""

"Was her death an accident?""

Silence.

That silence answered everything.

My hands started shaking.

"My God.""

"Michael.""

"No.""

I looked away.

"No, I need you to tell me.""

"I was trying to protect you.""

"You failed.""

The words came out before I could stop them.

Silence.

Then quietly:

"I know.""

That hurt.

Because for the first time, my father didn't sound like a hero.

He sounded like a broken man.

"I loved you.""

I closed my eyes.

"Then why did you leave?""

"Because I saw what they did to Emily.""

My entire body froze.

"What?""

"She wasn't supposed to be the target.""

The phone felt heavy.

"Who was?""

My father's answer was barely a whisper.

"You.""

The line went silent.

I stared at the screen.

Disconnected.

Marcus looked at me.

"What did he say?""

I couldn't answer.

Because every piece of my life had just shifted.

Emily's death.

Lauren's secrets.

My father's disappearance.

Sophie standing in the church.

All connected.

But there was one thing I still didn't understand.

If my father was alive...

Why was he still hiding?

Then another message appeared.

From the same unknown number.

Not a text.

A photo.

I opened it.

And my entire body went cold.

It was a picture of my wedding church.

Taken from outside.

The moment Sophie ripped off Lauren's veil.

The moment everything fell apart.

Underneath the photo was a message.

*You should have let the wedding happen.*

Another message appeared.

*Now everyone knows you're looking.*

Then the final one.

*Your daughter is next.*

I dropped the phone.

Because suddenly this was no longer about my father.

Or Lauren.

Or the truth.

Someone had been watching my family.

And now they had just threatened the one person who had been brave enough to expose them.

May you like

My little girl.

Sophie.
