Chapter 9: The Last Secret Ethan Left Behind

The room had never felt so dangerous.

Not because Victor Hale was armed.

Not because security surrounded him.

Not because Damian Cross stood only a few feet away, ready to destroy anyone who threatened his family.

The danger came from the words Victor had just spoken.

*Your mother wasn't protecting you.*

Sofia watched Damian carefully.

She had seen him angry.

She had seen him cold.

She had seen him become the man everyone feared.

But this was different.

This was something deeper.

A wound reopening.

"My mother.""

Damian repeated the words slowly.

As if saying them could somehow make them less impossible.

Victor smiled faintly.

"Yes.""

Damian took a step forward.

"You spent years hiding.""

"I survived.""

"You let everyone believe you were dead.""

"I had no choice.""

"Don't tell me about choices.""

Damian's voice became sharper.

"You stood outside the accident scene while my brother died.""

Victor's expression barely changed.

"I stood there because Ethan was already lost.""

Sofia felt anger rise.

"No.""

Everyone looked at her.

Victor included.

Sofia stepped forward.

"He wasn't lost.""

Her voice shook.

"He was fighting.""

Victor looked at her.

"You always did admire him.""

Sofia froze.

"You remember me.""

"Of course.""

The answer made her blood run cold.

"I remember everyone Ethan trusted.""

Damian immediately noticed.

"You knew about her.""

Victor nodded.

"Ethan told me.""

The room went silent.

Damian turned toward Sofia.

"You knew Victor?""

"No.""

Sofia shook her head.

"I never met him before that night.""

Victor smiled.

"That is true.""

He looked at Damian.

"She didn't know who I was.""

"Then explain.""

Victor walked slowly around the room.

"Your brother discovered something.""

Damian said nothing.

"Something your father spent decades hiding.""

"The organization.""

Victor nodded.

"Among other things.""

"What else?""

Victor stopped.

"Your mother.""

Again.

That name.

That subject.

Damian's expression hardened.

"Tell me.""

Victor looked at him.

"Richard Cross wasn't the only person who built the empire.""

Nobody moved.

"Your mother helped him.""

Sofia frowned.

"Helped him?""

Victor nodded.

"She was smarter than your father.""

Damian's face changed.

"That's impossible.""

"Why?""

"Because my mother hated that world.""

Victor gave a quiet laugh.

"That is what she wanted you to believe.""

The words hit harder because Damian wanted to reject them.

But he couldn't.

Not anymore.

Too many lies had already been uncovered.

"What did she do?""

Victor looked at him.

"She cleaned up your father's mistakes.""

Silence.

"She controlled the people who threatened your family.""

"What does that mean?""

"It means Richard built the empire.""

A pause.

"Your mother made sure nobody could take it away.""

Damian stared.

Sofia could almost see the memories moving through his mind.

His childhood.

His parents.

The moments he thought he understood.

Everything changing.

"Ethan knew.""

Victor nodded.

"Yes.""

"And he wanted to expose her.""

"No.""

Victor looked at Sofia.

"He wanted to expose both of them.""

Damian's eyes narrowed.

"Both?""

"Your parents created something together.""

Victor's voice lowered.

"And Ethan discovered they never truly stopped.""

The room went silent.

Then Damian asked:

"Why?""

Victor looked almost disappointed.

"Because your brother was the only one in that family who still believed right and wrong mattered.""

The words hurt.

Because Damian knew they were true.

Ethan had always been different.

While Damian learned how to survive...

Ethan learned how to care.

While Damian built walls...

Ethan opened doors.

And maybe that was why Ethan was dangerous.

Because he still believed people could change.

"What did Ethan find?""

Victor looked toward Sofia.

"He found the ledger.""

Damian froze.

"What ledger?""

"The one your father kept.""

"Where is it?""

Victor smiled.

"If I knew that, we wouldn't be having this conversation.""

Damian studied him.

"You expect me to believe you.""

"No.""

Victor looked at him.

"I expect you to understand.""

"Understand what?""

"That I didn't kill Ethan.""

Everyone became still.

Sofia stared.

"You expect us to believe that?""

Victor looked at her.

"No.""

A pause.

"But Ethan did.""

Damian's expression changed.

"What?""

Victor reached inside his coat.

Immediately, security raised their weapons.

Damian lifted a hand.

"Wait.""

Victor removed a small envelope.

He placed it on the table.

"Your brother left this.""

Damian didn't move.

"Why bring it now?""

"Because now you know enough to understand it.""

Sofia watched him.

"Why should we trust you?""

Victor looked at her.

"Because Ethan trusted me.""

That answer shocked everyone.

"You worked with him?""

Victor nodded.

"At the end.""

Damian looked disgusted.

"My brother trusted the man who lied about being dead?""

Victor's expression changed.

"I didn't lie to Ethan.""

"Then why disappear?""

"Because your mother ordered it.""

Silence.

Damian stared.

"My mother?""

Victor nodded.

"She knew Ethan was getting close.""

"And you protected yourself.""

"No.""

Victor looked at him.

"I protected Ethan.""

Nobody spoke.

Then Damian grabbed the envelope.

He opened it.

Inside was a small flash drive.

And a handwritten note.

Sofia watched his face as he read.

At first, nothing.

Then confusion.

Then shock.

"What is it?""

Damian didn't answer.

He handed the note to Sofia.

Her hands trembled as she read Ethan's handwriting.

*If Damian finds this, it means I failed.*

Her heart tightened.

The next line destroyed her.

*But if Sofia is with him, I know I didn't fail completely.*

She looked up.

Damian was watching her.

"Ethan knew.""

Sofia whispered.

"He knew I would find you.""

Victor nodded.

"He planned everything.""

Damian took the note.

"What else?""

Sofia read the rest.

*Damian, if you are reading this, don't trust the story they gave you. Don't trust the people who say they protected you. The truth is not outside our family. The truth is inside it.*

Damian closed his eyes.

For a moment, he looked exhausted.

Not weak.

Just tired of carrying a lifetime of lies.

The flash drive contained videos.

Documents.

Financial records.

Everything Ethan had collected.

Marcus connected it to the system.

The first video appeared.

Ethan.

Alive.

Sitting in a dark room.

Damian stopped breathing.

His brother looked tired.

Afraid.

But alive.

"If you're watching this...""

Ethan looked directly into the camera.

"Something happened to me.""

Sofia covered her mouth.

Seeing him again hurt.

Even after six years.

Especially after six years.

Ethan continued.

"Damian, I need you to listen carefully.""

The video became distorted.

Then clearer.

"Everyone will tell you they did this for the family.""

A pause.

"They will say they were protecting you.""

Damian stared.

"But the truth is...""

Ethan looked away.

"They were protecting the empire.""

Silence.

Then:

"Your mother knows.""

Damian froze.

"She knows everything.""

Sofia looked at him.

Ethan continued.

"She knows Richard was responsible for things that cannot be forgiven.""

The video shook.

"Ethan looked behind him.

Someone was there.

Someone off camera.

His expression changed.

Then he whispered:

"If something happens to me...""

A pause.

"Don't blame Damian.""

The room went silent.

Sofia looked at Damian.

Because those words changed everything.

Ethan hadn't been warning her about Damian.

He had been warning her not to let anyone make Damian the enemy.

The video continued.

"Damian has spent his entire life trying not to become our father.""

Ethan smiled sadly.

"That's why they fear him.""

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Not even Victor.

Damian stared at the blank screen.

All his life, he had believed Ethan died thinking he was the enemy.

Now he knew the truth.

Ethan had believed in him.

A sound came from the hallway.

A gunshot.

Everyone moved instantly.

Security rushed toward the door.

Sofia froze.

Another shot.

Then silence.

Marcus returned moments later.

His face was serious.

"Sir.""

Damian looked up.

"What happened?""

Marcus hesitated.

"The shooter escaped.""

"Who?""

Marcus looked at Victor.

Then at Damian.

"It wasn't an outsider.""

A terrible silence followed.

"Then who?""

Marcus answered quietly:

"The shooter was one of our guards.""

Everyone froze.

Someone inside Cross Manor.

Again.

Damian turned toward Victor.

But Victor was already looking at Sofia.

And Sofia understood.

The attack wasn't meant to kill Damian.

It wasn't meant to kill Victor.

It was meant to destroy the evidence.

Someone was desperate.

Because the truth Ethan died for...

was finally coming out.

Damian looked at the flash drive.

Then at Sofia.

Then toward the dark hallway.

"The enemy has been inside this house the entire time.""

Sofia whispered:

"And now they know we found them.""

Damian's expression hardened.

For the first time in six years...

May you like

he wasn't searching for Ethan's killer.

He was hunting them.
