Chapter 10: The Last Enemy Standing
The first thing Damian Cross did was lock every door in Cross Manor.
The second thing he did was remove everyone from his life who had access to those doors.
No exceptions.
No loyalty.
No history.
No excuses.
For six years, Damian had believed the greatest threats came from outside.
Rivals.
Enemies.
People who wanted his money or his power.
He had built walls around himself because he thought the danger was waiting beyond them.
He never imagined the danger had been living inside the walls with him.
Now he knew better.
And that knowledge changed everything.
The main hall of Cross Manor was empty except for Damian, Sofia, Marcus, and Victor.
Everyone else had been moved to a separate security area.
Every employee was being investigated.
Every camera was being reviewed.
Every conversation was being examined.
Trust had become the most dangerous thing in the house.
Sofia stood near the window, watching security teams move through the estate.
"How many people knew?""
Damian didn't look up from the documents on the table.
"About what?""
"About Ethan.""
A pause.
"Too many.""
His answer was quiet.
Sofia looked at him.
"You don't know that.""
"I do.""
He picked up one of the financial records from the flash drive.
"Secrets like this don't survive because one person knows.""
His eyes moved across the numbers.
"They survive because everyone knows enough to stay silent.""
Sofia understood.
The truth wasn't hidden by one person.
It was protected by an entire system.
A system built over decades.
"Damian.""
He looked up.
"You still think your mother was involved.""
The question hurt.
She could see it.
But Damian didn't avoid it.
"I don't know what to think anymore.""
That honesty surprised her.
The Damian Cross she first met would never have admitted uncertainty.
He would have turned uncertainty into anger.
But now...
he was allowing himself to feel the damage.
"I spent my whole life believing my father was the problem.""
He looked at the photograph of his family sitting on the table.
"My father was cruel.""
A pause.
"But my mother...""
He stopped.
Sofia waited.
"She was the person who taught me what loyalty meant.""
The pain in his voice was almost impossible to hear.
Almost.
"And now I don't know if anything she taught me was real.""
Sofia stepped closer.
"Maybe it was.""
Damian looked at her.
"What?""
"Maybe she was both.""
He frowned.
"Both?""
"Someone can love you and still make terrible choices.""
The words stayed between them.
Because they were true.
Because Sofia had spent years trying to understand that about people.
Her own father.
Ethan.
Even Damian.
Nobody was only one thing.
Good.
Bad.
Hero.
Villain.
People were usually something much more complicated.
Damian looked away.
"You sound like Ethan.""
The sentence surprised her.
"What?""
"He used to say things like that.""
A faint sadness crossed his face.
"He believed people were more than their worst mistakes.""
Sofia smiled slightly.
"Maybe he was right.""
Damian looked at her.
"You believed that about me?""
She didn't answer immediately.
Because the truth mattered.
"At first?""
"No.""
He nodded.
"I figured.""
"I thought you were dangerous.""
"You were right.""
She looked at him.
"Maybe.""
A small silence.
"But you weren't the danger I thought you were.""
For the first time in days, something almost like warmth appeared in Damian's expression.
Almost.
Then Marcus entered.
"Sir.""
Damian immediately focused.
"What did you find?""
Marcus placed a file on the table.
"The security guard who fired the shot.""
"Name.""
"Daniel Reeves.""
Damian frowned.
"I know him.""
"Yes.""
Marcus looked at the file.
"He's worked for the Cross family for seventeen years.""
Sofia felt cold.
"Seventeen years?""
Marcus nodded.
"He was assigned to Ethan's security detail before the accident.""
Damian froze.
"What?""
Marcus continued.
"We checked his records.""
A pause.
"He was one of the people who approved the official accident report.""
The room became silent.
Damian picked up the file.
"Bring him.""
Marcus hesitated.
"We already tried.""
Damian looked up.
"What does that mean?""
"He disappeared.""
Of course.
Another missing piece.
Another person who knew too much.
Damian closed the file.
"Find him.""
"We will.""
"No.""
Damian's voice became colder.
"Find him before someone else does.""
Daniel Reeves was found three hours later.
Not by the security team.
By Sofia.
She discovered the hidden room behind the old wine cellar.
A place she had never seen before.
A place that wasn't on any Cross Manor blueprint.
Inside was a small office.
Old files.
Photographs.
Documents.
And a wall covered with pictures.
Pictures of Ethan.
Sofia stopped breathing.
There were dozens.
Ethan entering buildings.
Meeting people.
Reading documents.
And one photograph that made her blood run cold.
Ethan.
Victor.
Daniel.
And Damian's mother.
Together.
Sofia immediately called Damian.
He arrived within minutes.
The moment he saw the room, he understood.
This wasn't just a hiding place.
It was an observation room.
Someone had been watching Ethan.
Studying him.
Tracking him.
"How long?""
Damian asked.
Marcus looked around.
"Years.""
Damian touched one of the photographs.
His brother.
Always smiling.
Always searching.
Always alone.
"No.""
Sofia looked at him.
"What?""
"He wasn't alone.""
She followed his eyes.
On the desk was a journal.
Ethan's handwriting.
Damian opened it.
The first page contained only one sentence.
*If Damian finds this, tell him I was wrong.*
Damian froze.
He turned the page.
More writing.
*I spent months believing my brother was part of it. I was wrong.*
Sofia watched his expression change.
The next page.
*Damian was never the enemy. He was the person they were trying to control.*
Damian closed his eyes.
For years, those words were what he needed most.
Not revenge.
Not answers.
Just proof that his brother had not hated him.
Then another sentence caught his attention.
*But there is one person Damian will never suspect.*
A chill moved through the room.
Damian continued reading.
*Because she taught him how to trust.*
He stopped.
Sofia looked at him.
"Who?""
Damian slowly turned the page.
The answer was written there.
A name.
One name.
*Evelyn.*
Nobody spoke.
The woman who had raised him.
The woman who had cared for the family.
The woman who claimed she tried to save Ethan.
Damian stared at the page.
"No.""
Sofia looked at him.
"Damian.""
"No.""
His voice was sharper.
"She wouldn't.""
Marcus remained silent.
Because he knew.
Everyone had a breaking point.
And Damian's was realizing that the person who protected him his entire life might have also destroyed it.
The door behind them opened.
Everyone turned.
Evelyn stood there.
No fear.
No surprise.
Just sadness.
"I wondered when you would find it.""
Damian stared.
"You knew.""
Evelyn looked down.
"Yes.""
"You knew Ethan kept this here.""
"Yes.""
"And you let me find it.""
A pause.
"Yes.""
Damian's voice became dangerous.
"Why?""
Evelyn looked at him.
"Because Ethan wanted you to know the truth.""
"The truth that you betrayed him?""
Her face changed.
Pain.
"Yes.""
The answer shocked him.
Sofia stepped forward.
"What did you do?""
Evelyn looked at her.
"I helped create the lie.""
Silence.
"But I didn't kill Ethan.""
Damian laughed bitterly.
"Everyone says that.""
"I know.""
"Then why should I believe you?""
Evelyn looked at him.
"Because I was the one who called Sofia that night.""
Sofia froze.
"What?""
Evelyn nodded.
"I knew Ethan trusted you.""
Sofia stared.
"You brought me there?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Evelyn's eyes filled with regret.
"Because Ethan needed someone outside the family.""
Damian looked confused.
"Then why hide it?""
Evelyn looked at him.
"Because your mother found out.""
The room went still.
"She knew?""
"Yes.""
"And she did what?""
Evelyn swallowed.
"She ordered me to erase everything.""
Damian stared.
"But you didn't.""
"No.""
"Why?""
Evelyn looked at the journal.
"Because Ethan reminded me of who you both were before this family destroyed you.""
A long silence.
Then Damian asked:
"Where is my mother?""
Nobody answered.
That was answer enough.
Marcus checked his phone.
Then looked up.
"Sir.""
"What?""
"She just arrived.""
Everyone turned.
The front doors opened.
A woman entered Cross Manor.
Elegant.
Calm.
Older.
But unmistakable.
Damian's mother.
The person at the center of every secret.
She looked at her son.
Then at Sofia.
Then at the journal in Damian's hand.
"I suppose the truth finally found you.""
Damian stood still.
"Why?""
His mother looked at him.
Not like a criminal.
Not like an enemy.
Like a mother who knew she had lost her son.
"Because I was trying to save you.""
Damian shook his head.
"Everyone says that.""
"I know.""
She stepped closer.
"But unlike them, I did.""
"By lying to me?""
"By keeping you alive.""
Silence.
Sofia watched Damian.
Waiting.
His entire life had led to this moment.
The truth.
The betrayal.
The answer to Ethan's death.
His mother looked at him.
"Your brother wasn't killed because he found the truth.""
A pause.
"He was killed because he was going to expose it.""
Damian's eyes narrowed.
"Who killed him?""
His mother looked toward Sofia.
Then back at him.
"The person who caused the accident.""
Everyone waited.
Then she said the words nobody expected.
"It was me.""
The room went completely silent.
Sofia stopped breathing.
Damian stared.
His own mother.
The person he spent his life protecting.
"I didn't mean for Ethan to die.""
Her voice broke.
"I was trying to stop him from destroying everything.""
Damian's face became unreadable.
"Everything?""
"The empire.""
"The money?""
"The power?""
His mother looked at him.
"No.""
A pause.
"The family.""
Damian looked away.
Because somehow that was worse.
Not greed.
Not ambition.
Fear.
A fear that had destroyed everyone.
His mother continued.
"Ethan knew too much.""
"So you chased him.""
"I tried to talk to him.""
"And when he refused?""
Silence.
The answer was there.
Damian looked at Sofia.
Then at Ethan's journal.
Then at the family portrait hanging on the wall.
Six years.
Six years of searching for an enemy.
Only to discover the enemy was the pain his family carried for generations.
Finally, Damian spoke.
"Leave.""
His mother looked at him.
"Damian—"
"Leave.""
This time, there was no anger.
Only exhaustion.
She nodded slowly.
And walked away.
No one stopped her.
Weeks later, Cross Manor was different.
The secrets were no longer buried.
The empire built on fear began collapsing.
Damian turned over evidence.
Destroyed the systems his father created.
Ended the relationships that kept the old world alive.
And for the first time...
he built something that belonged only to him.
Not his father.
Not his mother.
Not his family's name.
Him.
Sofia never returned to being just a maid.
Damian offered her money.
A position.
A future.
She refused the first two.
Accepted the third.
She went back to school.
Finished her nursing degree.
Because Ethan had once believed she deserved more than the life she had been forced into.
And she decided he was right.
One year after the truth came out, Damian stood beside Ethan's grave.
Sofia joined him.
For a while, they said nothing.
Then Damian spoke.
"I used to think losing him was the worst thing that happened to me.""
Sofia looked at him.
"And now?""
He looked at the sky.
"Now I think losing him taught me what mattered.""
A quiet moment passed.
Then Sofia smiled.
"Ethan would like that.""
Damian nodded.
"He would.""
They stood together.
Not because the past was forgotten.
It never would be.
Some wounds stayed.
Some memories never faded.
But the truth had finally been found.
And Ethan Cross's final wish had come true.
The people he loved stopped fighting each other.
They stopped hiding.
They stopped running.
Because sometimes the greatest victory wasn't destroying the enemy.
May you like
Sometimes it was finally discovering who the enemy really was...
and choosing not to become one.
