Chapter 3: The Name Hidden in Ethan’s Last Breath

The Cross Manor had never felt so silent.

Not even after Ethan’s funeral.

Not even during the years when Damian Cross stopped speaking about his brother.

The mansion had always been filled with movement — servants walking through endless hallways, security teams changing shifts, business partners arriving with expensive gifts and carefully practiced smiles.

But tonight, every sound seemed distant.

Because everyone in the house knew something had changed.

The silver roadster sitting in the garage was no longer just a memory.

It was evidence.

And the maid who had cleaned their floors for two years was suddenly the only person alive who could explain what really happened the night Ethan Cross died.

Sofia sat alone in the small staff dining room, staring at the untouched cup of tea in front of her.

She should have left.

That was the logical thing.

She should have packed whatever belongings she had, walked away from Cross Manor, and disappeared before Damian Cross discovered how deep the truth went.

But she knew something.

Running now would only make him believe she was guilty.

And worse...

it would make whoever had been watching her for six years realize she had finally spoken.

The door opened.

Sofia immediately stood.

But it wasn't Damian.

It was Marcus Vale.

Damian's head of security.

A man who looked like he had been carved out of stone.

He had worked for the Cross family for years. Sofia had rarely heard him speak more than a few words at a time.

"You need to come with me.""

Sofia frowned.

"Where?""

"Damian wants you upstairs.""

Her stomach tightened.

"Why?""

Marcus looked at her.

"Because he found something.""

Those four words made every instinct inside her wake up.

"What did he find?""

Marcus didn't answer.

That meant it was bad.

Sofia followed him through the mansion.

The same halls she had walked through thousands of times suddenly felt unfamiliar.

The portraits on the walls.

The expensive furniture.

The family photographs.

Everything looked different.

Because now she knew there were secrets hidden beneath all of it.

Marcus stopped outside Damian's office.

Before opening the door, he looked at her.

"Whatever happens in there, tell the truth.""

Sofia looked surprised.

"Are you warning me?""

"No.""

Marcus opened the door.

"I'm warning him.""

Then he walked away.

Sofia stepped inside.

Damian stood behind his desk.

The police report was open in front of him.

Several photographs were scattered across the surface.

And beside them was a small black envelope.

Sofia stopped.

She recognized it immediately.

Her face changed.

Damian noticed.

"You've seen this before.""

It wasn't a question.

Sofia stared at the envelope.

"Where did you get that?""

"From the car.""

Her breathing slowed.

"No.""

Damian picked it up.

"Why?""

"Because it wasn't there.""

His eyes sharpened.

"Explain.""

Sofia stepped closer.

"The night Ethan died, I searched the car.""

Damian froze.

"You searched it?""

"After the crash.""

"Why?""

"Because I was trying to help him.""

The answer softened something in his expression.

Only slightly.

But Sofia noticed.

"I looked everywhere. The seats. The glove compartment. The trunk.""

She pointed at the envelope.

"That wasn't there.""

Damian opened it carefully.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph that made the air leave the room.

Sofia saw Damian's face change.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Shock.

"What is it?""

He didn't answer.

She moved closer.

And then she saw.

The photograph showed Ethan.

Standing outside a building.

Alive.

Healthy.

Smiling.

But he wasn't alone.

Beside him stood a man Sofia didn't recognize.

A man wearing a dark coat.

The image was old.

But clear.

Damian picked it up.

"Where was this taken?""

There was a note attached.

His eyes moved across the paper.

"Three days before Ethan died.""

Sofia looked at him.

"Who is that man?""

Damian didn't answer.

Because he knew.

She could see it.

"You know him.""

A long silence.

Then Damian said:

"My father.""

Sofia froze.

"What?""

"My father.""

The words felt impossible.

Because everyone knew Richard Cross.

The founder of the Cross empire.

The man who built the company from nothing.

The man who died two years before Ethan's accident.

"He was dead when Ethan died.""

"Yes.""

Damian looked at the photograph.

"But he wasn't supposed to be involved.""

Sofia frowned.

"What does that mean?""

Damian sat down slowly.

For the first time since she met him, he looked uncertain.

"My father and Ethan had been fighting.""

"About what?""

"I don't know.""

"You don't know?""

Damian looked at her.

"Not everything inside my family was shared with me.""

That surprised her.

The idea that Damian Cross, a man everyone feared, had secrets kept from him seemed impossible.

But maybe that was the point.

Powerful families had the most dangerous secrets.

"Your father was alive three days before Ethan died?""

Damian nodded.

"According to every record, he was hospitalized.""

"Then how was he there?""

Damian looked at the photograph.

"Someone has been lying.""

Sofia felt a chill.

"About Ethan's death.""

"About my father's death.""

The room went quiet.

Two deaths.

Two mysteries.

Connected by one photograph.

Damian stood.

"Who else knew you saw the accident?""

Sofia hesitated.

"The police.""

"Anyone else?""

"I don't know.""

"Think.""

His voice wasn't angry.

It was urgent.

Sofia closed her eyes.

The night came back.

The flashing lights.

The rain.

The voices.

Then suddenly...

A memory.

One she had forgotten.

Or maybe one she had forced herself to forget.

"There was someone else.""

Damian turned immediately.

"Who?""

"After Ethan...""

She swallowed.

"After the ambulance arrived, a man came to the scene.""

"Police?""

"No.""

"Security?""

"No.""

"Then who?""

Sofia looked at him.

"He said he was a friend of Ethan.""

Damian's face darkened.

"What did he look like?""

"Older.""

"How old?""

"Maybe fifty.""

"Anything else?""

Sofia tried to remember.

Then she did.

A small detail.

Something she hadn't understood back then.

"He had a ring.""

Damian stopped.

"What kind of ring?""

"A black stone.""

The color drained from his face.

Sofia noticed.

"What?""

Damian walked toward a cabinet.

He opened it.

Inside were old family documents.

He pulled out a photograph.

A family photograph.

Richard Cross.

Ethan.

Damian.

And another man standing behind them.

Sofia looked at it.

Her blood went cold.

Because she recognized him.

"The man at the accident.""

Damian stared at the picture.

"No.""

His voice was barely audible.

"That can't be possible.""

"Who is he?""

Damian didn't answer immediately.

When he did, his voice had changed.

"He was my father's closest adviser.""

Sofia waited.

Then he added:

"His name was Victor Hale.""

The name meant nothing to her.

But it clearly meant something to Damian.

"Was?""

Damian looked at her.

"Victor Hale died ten years ago.""

The room became cold.

Sofia stepped back.

"That's impossible.""

"Yes.""

Damian looked at the photograph.

"Which means either you saw a ghost...""

A pause.

"Or someone wanted us to believe he was dead.""

Before Sofia could respond, the office door suddenly opened.

Marcus entered.

His expression was serious.

"Sir.""

Damian looked up.

"What?""

"We found something else in the vehicle.""

"What?""

Marcus glanced at Sofia.

Then back at Damian.

"A hidden compartment.""

Damian's eyes narrowed.

"Where?""

"Under the passenger seat.""

Sofia felt her chest tighten.

Passenger seat.

That meant...

Ethan had hidden something.

Or someone had placed something there.

"What was inside?""

Marcus held out a small evidence bag.

Inside was a phone.

Old.

Damaged.

But still recognizable.

Sofia stared.

"I've seen that.""

Damian turned.

"When?""

"The night Ethan died.""

The room froze.

"What?""

Sofia looked at the phone.

"I saw it in his hand.""

Damian stepped closer.

"Why didn't you mention this?""

"Because I thought it was destroyed.""

"Who had it?""

Sofia swallowed.

"Ethan.""

"Before he died?""

She nodded.

"He was trying to call someone.""

Damian took the evidence bag.

"Did he?""

"I don't know.""

"Did you see the screen?""

Sofia closed her eyes.

She remembered.

The cracked display.

The rain covering everything.

The final moments.

Then...

A number.

Not a name.

Just a number.

One she had memorized because Ethan repeated it.

"He didn't call.""

Damian looked at her.

"How do you know?""

"Because before he could...""

She stopped.

The memory hurt.

"What?""

Sofia whispered:

"Before he could call, he saw someone coming.""

Damian's expression changed.

"Who?""

She looked at him.

The fear she had carried for six years returned.

"The man with the black ring.""

A long silence.

Then Damian said:

"Where is the phone now?""

Marcus answered.

"We're taking it to the lab.""

"No.""

Damian looked at him.

"Nobody touches it except us.""

Marcus nodded.

"Understood.""

Sofia watched Damian carefully.

"You think the phone has the answer.""

"I think Ethan knew he was in danger.""

"And he trusted that phone.""

Damian looked at the device.

"My brother didn't carry things without a reason.""

Then his eyes moved back to Sofia.

"Neither do you.""

She frowned.

"What?""

"You kept this secret for six years.""

"I was afraid.""

"No.""

Damian stepped closer.

"You were protecting something.""

Sofia looked away.

Because he was right again.

She wasn't just protecting herself.

She was protecting Ethan's last message.

The one she had never told anyone.

The one she had hidden because she didn't know what it meant.

Damian noticed.

"What else?""

Her heart stopped.

"I told you everything.""

"No.""

His voice lowered.

"Not everything.""

Sofia remained silent.

Then Damian said the words she feared most.

"You heard Ethan's last words.""

The room went completely still.

Sofia looked at him.

"How did you know?""

Damian's expression hardened.

"Because nobody who sees a dying person remembers only the accident.""

Her lips parted.

He knew.

Not everything.

But enough.

"What did he say?""

Sofia looked down.

She couldn't.

Not yet.

"Tell me.""

"I can't.""

Damian's eyes became cold.

"Why?""

Because the name was impossible.

Because the name belonged to someone Damian trusted.

Because saying it would destroy the last piece of his family he still believed in.

Sofia whispered:

"Because if I tell you...""

She looked at him.

"You will never look at your family the same way again.""

For the first time...

Damian Cross looked afraid.

Not of an enemy.

Not of a threat.

But of the truth.

And somewhere deep inside Cross Manor, someone listened.

Someone who had spent six years making sure Ethan's death stayed buried.

Someone who now knew Sofia had finally spoken.

May you like

And they knew one thing.

The maid had become the biggest danger in the entire Cross empire.
