Chapter 8: The Mother-in-Law Who Built the Trap
I had spent years trying to understand Beatriz.
That was my mistake.
I kept searching for reasons.
Maybe she was afraid of losing her son.
Maybe she was traditional.
Maybe she struggled with change.
Maybe she needed time to accept me.
But some people were not misunderstood.
Some people were exactly what they showed you.
And Beatriz had shown me.
She believed love meant control.
Daniel continued explaining.
“Your mother-in-law modified the agreement after the original investment was complete.””
Mateo looked sick.
“She had no authority.””
“Legally, that is something we need to examine.””
“Then why did nobody challenge it?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Because nobody knew.””
I looked at the documents.
Nobody knew.
That sentence explained everything.
Secrets survived because someone benefited from silence.
“How did she get access to the agreement?”” I asked.
Daniel answered carefully.
“Through your father.””
Mateo looked at him.
“My father helped her?””
“I believe so.””
I closed my eyes.
Another betrayal.
Another person who chose silence.
Mateo stood and walked toward the window.
“My whole family knew.””
Not everyone.
Not every detail.
But enough.
Enough to make decisions.
Enough to manipulate.
Enough to let us live under a threat that was never real.
Daniel gathered the papers.
“There is one more thing.””
I almost laughed.
“Of course there is.””
He looked uncomfortable.
“I found a handwritten note attached to the original documents.””
“From who?””
“Beatriz.””
Mateo turned.
“What did it say?””
Daniel looked at the page.
“She wrote: ‘If he chooses love over duty, he must learn the consequences.’”
The words were simple.
But they revealed everything.
This was never about protecting the family.
It was punishment.
Beatriz wanted Mateo to suffer for choosing me.
She wanted him to regret leaving the path she created.
Mateo sat down.
For a long time, he said nothing.
Then:
“She never accepted that I chose my own life.””
I reached for his hand.
Not because everything was fixed.
It wasn’t.
But because I knew what that feeling was like.
The feeling of realizing people you trusted had been controlling pieces of your life without permission.
That evening, we went to confront Beatriz.
Not because we expected an apology.
Because we needed answers.
Her house was quiet when she opened the door.
She looked surprised.
Then nervous.
“You came together.””
“Yes,” Mateo said.
She looked at me.
“What do you want?””
Mateo stepped inside.
“The truth.””
Her expression hardened.
“I have always been truthful.””
“No.””
His voice was calm.
“That’s the problem.””
We entered the living room.
The same room where she had once criticized my career.
The same room where she had spoken about my house like it belonged to someone else.
Mateo placed the documents on the table.
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
“You found them.””
Not a question.
A confession.
Mateo stared.
“You knew.””
Beatriz sat down.
“I knew what was necessary.””
“Necessary?””
“Yes.””
“You threatened my wife.””
“I protected you.””
“No.””
Mateo shook his head.
“You controlled me.””
Beatriz looked hurt.
“I am your mother.””
“And I am an adult.””
The sentence seemed to hit her harder than any accusation.
Because maybe that was the real conflict.
She could accept Mateo being successful.
She could accept him being married.
She could accept him having a house.
But she could not accept him making choices she did not approve of.
“I only wanted what was best for you,” she whispered.
Mateo looked at her.
“Then why did you never ask what I wanted?””
Silence.
I watched Beatriz carefully.
For the first time, she looked old.
Not weak.
Not innocent.
Just tired.
But then she said something that changed everything.
“You think this is about you?””
I frowned.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“You have no idea what you married into.””
Mateo stiffened.
“Mom.””
“No.””
She stood.
“You deserve to know.””
Her eyes moved between us.
“Your father is not the person who saved this family.””
“What does that mean?”” Mateo asked.
Beatriz smiled sadly.
“It means the company, the house, the money… none of it came from where you think.””
The room went quiet.
“What are you talking about?”” Mateo asked.
She walked toward a cabinet.
Pulled out a small box.
And placed it on the table.
Inside was an old photograph.
A woman.
A young woman.
Standing beside Ernesto.
But it wasn’t Beatriz.
Mateo stared.
“Who is that?””
Beatriz looked at him.
“The person who made all of this possible.””
I picked up the photograph.
On the back was a name.
*Marina Torres.*
Camila’s mother.
I looked at Mateo.
May you like
And suddenly the connection became clear.
This family’s secrets went much deeper than anyone admitted.
