Chapter 2: The Family Meeting and the House They Thought They Owned
Sergio’s house was already crowded when we arrived.
Of course it was.
Apparently Cárdenas family meetings required an audience.
The moment Mateo parked, I saw familiar faces through the windows.
Paulina.
Alejandra.
Ernesto.
Beatriz.
And several relatives who had no reason to be involved but somehow always appeared when there was conflict.
Mateo turned off the engine.
“You don’t have to fight alone.””
I looked at him.
“I’m not fighting.””
He frowned.
“Then what are you doing?””
“Listening.””
That surprised him.
But it was true.
People revealed themselves when they believed they were in control.
Inside, Beatriz stood near the dining table.
She smiled when she saw me.
A polite smile.
The kind people use when they want others to know they are pretending to be polite.
“Valeria.””
“Beatriz.””
Nobody hugged.
Nobody offered coffee.
That told me everything.
Ernesto motioned toward the chairs.
“Sit.””
I sat.
Mateo sat beside me.
The family arranged themselves across from us like they were preparing for a negotiation.
Beatriz placed a folder on the table.
“This is about family.””
I almost smiled.
Whenever someone began with that sentence, it usually meant someone was about to demand something.
Ernesto spoke next.
“We need to discuss the future.””
“The future of what?”” Mateo asked.
“The family.””
“No.””
Ernesto looked irritated.
“The company.””
“Then why is Valeria here?””
Nobody answered.
I did.
“Because yesterday your wife said you would decide what happens to my house.””
The room became silent.
Beatriz’s expression tightened.
“Our house.””
“No.””
My voice remained calm.
“My house too. And the legal documents will confirm that.””
Alejandra leaned forward.
“You’re making this very aggressive.””
“I’m correcting a misunderstanding.””
Beatriz opened the folder.
“We are not here to attack you.””
I looked at the folder.
“Then why does this feel like a trial?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Ernesto said something I never expected.
“Because we need to know whether Mateo made the right choice.””
Mateo immediately stiffened.
“What does that mean?””
Beatriz looked at her son.
“You changed after marrying her.””
“Yes,” Mateo replied.
“I became happier.””
Nobody liked that answer.
Especially his mother.
She looked toward me.
“Before you, Mateo understood responsibility.””
I laughed softly.
“Before me, Mateo followed instructions.””
The room went still.
Because it was true.
And everyone knew it.
Then Beatriz said the name.
“Camila would never have spoken to this family like this.””
There it was.
The ghost in the room.
Mateo looked at his mother.
“Mom.””
“No, Mateo. We need honesty.””
I looked at him.
He looked uncomfortable.
Not because the accusation was false.
Because it was familiar.
Beatriz continued.
“Camila understood what family meant.””
I answered before I could stop myself.
“And I don’t?””
“You prioritize yourself.””
I smiled.
“Is that what you call a woman having a career?””
“You changed after your promotion.””
“No. I became more confident.””
Paulina rolled her eyes.
“This is exactly what Mom means.””
I turned toward her.
“What exactly?””
“You think money makes you better.””
I stared at her.
“No. I think respect makes people equal.””
Nobody responded.
Then Ernesto pushed the folder toward Mateo.
“Sign this.””
Mateo looked down.
“What is it?””
“A family agreement.””
I reached for it.
Beatriz stopped me.
“This concerns our son.””
I looked directly at her.
“My husband.””
The tension became unbearable.
Then a voice came from behind us.
“Actually, it concerns both of them.””
Everyone turned.
An older man in a dark suit stood at the doorway.
I had never seen him before.
He carried a leather briefcase.
Ernesto immediately stood.
“Why are you here?””
The man looked at me.
“Because Mrs. Valeria Cárdenas requested a copy of the property records.””
My heart stopped for a second.
I had not requested anything.
Mateo looked at me.
“I didn’t call anyone.””
The attorney opened his briefcase.
“My mistake. I should say Mrs. Valeria’s name appears on another document as well.””
Nobody moved.
“What document?”” Beatriz asked.
The attorney placed a sealed envelope on the table.
Then he said the words that changed everything.
“A document involving the original ownership arrangement of this house.””
May you like
Mateo went completely silent.
Because before anyone opened that envelope, he already knew something was wrong.
