Chapter 6: The Truth Camila Revealed About the Cárdenas Family
I stayed on the phone with Camila for twelve minutes.
Twelve minutes that changed the way I saw everything.
Because the woman I thought was my enemy was telling me she had been trapped by the same people who were trying to control me.
“I don’t understand,” I said.
“You don’t have to trust me.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
“I know.””
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
Like someone who had carried a secret for years.
“Your mother-in-law always told everyone I was the perfect choice for Mateo.””
“Yes.””
“She never told them why.””
“Why?””
“Because I refused.””
I looked at Mateo.
He was listening carefully.
“You refused to marry him?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I realized the marriage wasn’t about love.””
I was silent.
“She wanted a connection between families. My father wanted his investment protected. Your father-in-law wanted his company saved. Everyone had a reason except Mateo and me.””
That sounded familiar.
Too familiar.
“What happened after you left?””
“Your husband was devastated.””
Mateo looked down.
I saw the pain cross his face.
“But eventually he moved on.””
“With me.””
“Yes.””
“And your family?””
“They were furious.””
“Why?””
“Because you were not supposed to exist.””
The sentence sent chills through me.
“What?””
“Valeria, I need you to understand. When Mateo chose you, they didn’t just lose a preferred daughter-in-law.””
She paused.
“They lost their ability to control his future.””
I sat down.
Everything suddenly connected.
The dinner.
The insults.
The house.
The meeting.
The document.
It was never about cooking.
It was never about tradition.
It was about power.
Camila continued.
“There’s something else you should know.””
“What?””
“My father never had full ownership rights over your house.””
I frowned.
“The attorney said—”
“The attorney is correct. The agreement existed. But there was a second agreement.””
“Between who?””
“Between my father and Ernesto.””
I looked at Mateo.
His face changed.
“What second agreement?”” he asked.
I repeated the question.
Camila answered.
“One that said if Mateo refused the arrangement, the investment would be converted into a personal debt.””
My eyes widened.
“Debt?””
“Yes.””
“Meaning?””
“Meaning your house was never supposed to be taken.””
I held my breath.
“Then what was the purpose?””
Her answer came quietly.
“Pressure.””
I closed my eyes.
“They wanted Mateo to come back.””
“Yes.””
“And they used me.””
“Yes.””
The anger returned.
But this time it was controlled.
Focused.
I thanked Camila and ended the call.
For several seconds, neither Mateo nor I spoke.
Then he whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
He looked broken.
“I should have told you about Camila.””
“Yes.””
“I should have asked more questions.””
“Yes.””
“I should have protected you.””
I sat across from him.
“Mateo.””
He looked up.
“I don’t need you to fight everyone.””
“What do you need?””
“The truth.””
He nodded.
“You have it now.””
“No.””
I looked toward the folder.
“We have pieces.””
That night, Mateo and I began searching through every document we had.
Mortgage papers.
Bank records.
Emails.
Everything.
At 2:14 in the morning, we found something strange.
A payment.
A large payment.
Made three years earlier.
From Ernesto.
To a private account.
The description was simple.
*Final settlement.*
Mateo stared at it.
“My father paid them.””
I looked at the date.
Three years earlier.
Two years after we bought the house.
One year after we married.
“He knew the agreement was no longer a threat.””
Mateo nodded.
“Then why continue?””
I looked at the payment.
Because suddenly the answer was obvious.
“He didn’t continue because he was afraid of losing the house.””
Mateo looked at me.
“He continued because he wanted you to believe you could.””
Neither of us spoke.
Because that realization was worse than the original betrayal.
Someone had not threatened our home.
Someone had used the fear of losing it to control us.
The next morning, Mateo called his father.
Ernesto answered immediately.
“Mateo?””
His voice sounded nervous.
“We know.””
Silence.
“What?””
“We found the payment.””
Another silence.
Then Ernesto sighed.
“I was hoping you would never see that.””
My blood ran cold.
Mateo gripped the phone.
“See what?””
Ernesto’s voice became quiet.
“The truth.””
“What truth?””
A long pause.
Then he said:
“Camila was never the person your mother wanted you to marry.””
Mateo froze.
“Then who was?””
And Ernesto answered with five words that changed everything.
“The woman your mother chose.””
I looked at Mateo.
Because suddenly I understood.
Camila had never been the final plan.
May you like
She had only been the first one.
And somewhere in the Cárdenas family’s past was another secret waiting to destroy everything. :::
